Paul O' Connell wins 2016 Sports Book of the Year for "The Battle", beating out 'Win or Learn'. I think Conor and the team have won enough this week. Mind you 2 more wins would be nice with Artem and Charlie on saturday.

If you're gonna get beaten might as well be to an Irish red-haired warrior :D

    Hello everyone!

Long time lurker here. Have really enjoyed this thread over the past couple of years. Great entertainment altogether! You all seem to really know your stuff but I bet none have you have met AND had your picture taken with the main man in SBG...

Artem has said Conor will be in Belfast for the fights, wonder will he make up part of the corner team for Charlie's fight? I reckon it'll be Roddy/Queally as the extra 2 for the Artem fight but it wouldn't shock me to see Conor/Roddy corner Charlie.

GSP talk has gone out the window lately would've thought they were keen to make it happen.

    Bit unnecessary.

GSP is in the process of signing with Bellator. Coker and GSP's agents are just making sure all is legit in regards to his contract with the UFC being invalid. It might be confirmed in time for an announcement at the next Bellator event.

GSP is almost starting to become irrelevant and forgotten. The new breed of MMA fan, barely knows nor cares who he is.

    You'd be very surprised.

Put it this way - as the card stands: Headlined by DC v Rumble and co-headlined by Hollway v Pettis, the card will probably do about 400,000 tops on PPV.

Throw GSP in there and it does over double that and may push towards 1 million buys.

He's still a huge name in MMA and has a huge social media following too.

In my experience, new fans tend to become hooked on MMA and take the time to go re-watch old fights. He's also kept his profile high appearing with Jean Claude van Damme in movies.

I'm not saying he wouldn't be a big draw. Of course he would but to the majority of new so called 'fans' he's pretty much just some guy they've never seen fight that apparently used to be the best in the world.

I think you give the new breed of MMA fans too much credit. A lot of em might watch his highlight reel but very few will fall in love with sport enough to actually take the time to rewatch old fights.

Fair enough about Dustin haven't watched that fight in a few years, I suggest you rewatch Brandao. He throws a wheel kick, Brandao spits at the ground and charges forward with the head down swinging.

He was charging forward head-down swinging in the opening round too. Not sure the spinning kick had a lot to do with it.

Anyway, I agree with you that the spinning kicks were partly to circle people towards his power hand but I don't think that was the only/main reason. I still think we'll see the spinning back kick in the future too. Just depends on the opponent. Most certainly won't be throwing too many of them against Nate or Khabib.

That's not a terrible reason to buy the PPV :) See if the guy who apparently used to be the best in the world is still the best.

A lot will depend on what happens with Ronda. If she gets beaten (like many predict) and Conor is taking a few months off, they will come begging cap in hand to both GSP, Nick Diaz and Conor to come back ASAP.

They don't have a single active draw beyond Conor if Ronda loses.

My personal guess (if she loses) is the UFC will offer Conor a truck load of money to come back for UFC 209 v Nate in March. It's 2 months before the baby is due, it's in Brooklyn so East Coast again, he's fresh and I can't imagine him not being in the gym every day when he gets home.

That'd be my guess anyway. If Ronda wins they'll probably chill and see if she'll fight again on 209. She gets paid far, far less than Conor so is the more cost-effective option for the UFC.

yeah for sure, thats precisely why I said he would still be a big draw.

T'was a first round TKO! Both times he threw wheel kicks in that fight Brandao came forward like a madman(even though the second hit him right on the temple!). The kicks certainly seemed to annoy Brandao, was certainly partly why McGregor threw them against an emotional guy.

No chance versus Khabib, or Ferguson for that matter. Dangerous thing to turn your back and go on leg vs. such monsters on the ground.

I'd like to see him versus Aldo again because we'd get a nice variety of striking, then again we probably wouldn't because the fight would probably be over within one.

    Opening minute*

I've watched the Brandao fight about 137 times and tonight for some reason i keep talking about Chad Mendes when you're clearly talking about Brandao lol.

I'd love to see the Aldo fight at lightweight. I think that could be Jose's optimum weight class too. I think Conor would KO him again BUT if Aldo starts getting off those leg kicks it'd be interesting to see how Conor responds to it. Very few people have launched a sustained kicking attack on Conors inside leg. Denis Siver took him off his feet with an inside leg kick and Eddie unbalanced him very early with one.

Personally I'd love to see new style matchups. I hate the immediate rematch and trilogy culture. I'd much prefer to see Woodley take on Maia and Conor to take on Ferguson.

Also, I think in horse racing terms they have a thing where they "upgrade the performance" of a horse in hindsight. So, let's say a well-fancied horse only finishes 3rd in a race. On the day of the race it's called a disappointing performance. Yet, the 2 newcomer horses that beat it subsequently turn out to be machines winning lots of races; so you look back and think "hmmm that was a lot better than we thought at the time".
As well as Gunni, that also describes Max Holloway

I dunno whether to take that praise genuinely. Could be just saying he's that great because he knocked his fighter out to deflect from their poor fight/gameplan.
I don't think it's fair to say the game plan was poor.
The plan was probably spot on, they just didn't succeed in implementing it.
    HattrickNZ wrote: »
Eddie says he did not follow the gameplan, i guess we will never find out what that was.
They've pretty much confirmed that their game plan was to circle left and stick to wrestling.

The narrative might be presented that he simply didn't follow that. But that's simply not true imo. Conor prevented him from following it.
He stuffed 3 or 4 takedowns, if he failed to do that, and Eddie hit those takedowns. They'd say Eddie was following the game plan - even though his actions no different. Which makes no sense.
Conor used angles and rock backs to put Eddie continually on the left side. Eddie wasn't just wading there on his own. He was trying to circle right but he was outclassed in terms of footwork and positioning.

That's not "Not following the gameplan" imo. Not following the game plan is McGregor v Diaz I. Conor went for it and ignored the instructions John and Owen were shouting. Those instructions were essentially what we seen in rounds 1 & 2 of the second fight.

Eddie lost because Conor was better.
Not because he didn't follow a gameplan.

No word of a lie it feels like Xmas to me the last 5 days and the gift keeps giving. Firas Zahabi just released his post-205 breakdown of Conor v Eddie. For any lurkers/newbies, that's Georges St. Pierres head coach of Tristar Gym. He bet GSP 250 press-ups that Diaz would win the rematch and this time he bet an all-you-can-eat dinner that Alvarez would win. GSP picked Conor both times. Anyway here it is, it's nearly always a phenomenal breakdown:

Bookies have Nate as favourite for next opponent at 7/4. I really don't think he'll be next?

Khabib Diaz will fight for number 1 155 contender.

Conor will fight Woodley next. Before next March imo.

Just on this I seen 35/1 on wonderboy and 15/2 on ferguson, all it takes is for conor to take few months off, wonderboy to win rematch/Ferguson beat Khabib in the meantime and conors first fight back to try get that 3rd belt or defend lightweight....

Interesting. Firas Zahabi said in his breakdown that he feels certain Conor can KO welterweights with his power.

Also said he puts Conor v Khabib at 50-50. If Conor lands the left it's goodnight vienna and if Khabib gets him down it's goodnight also.
