No way Conor fights Khabib in Russia. Why would he? The ball is in his court. It would be a right FU to Conor and Ireland if there was a big title fight in Russia after all the promises about Croker. I don't think either venue will happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,405 ✭✭✭Lukker-

Yeah Conor won't be fighting in Russia anytime soon. I don't think it'll be a numbered event to start off with. But they will get big fighters. I think we'll see Russian guys like Khabib, Tumenov on it and then some fighters with Russian connections like Werdum. The UFC were meant to have a deal to sign Fedor before the Malondando fight but the aftermath was such a **** show that it got canned, but it wouldn't surprise me if he signed a one fight deal to be at the first event.

I think the new owners would be much more likely to send Conor to China. The money they pay average footballers over there, it wouldn't surprise me if a local billionaire paid Conor's purse personally to fight there.

In fairness to Floyd, some of that was pretty funny. Complete dismissal.

Paul Kimmage was on Matt Cooper for a MMA discussion yesterday.
An interesting debate on the merits of various Irish sportspeople was sparked by rugby star Jamie Heaslip over the weekend.

The Ireland and Leinster stalwart took to social media to pose the question of whether Conor McGregor is now the country's greatest ever sportsperson after the Dubliner became the first UFC fighter to hold belts in two weight classes at the same time after his win against Eddie Alvarez on Saturday night.

McGregor is polarising at the best of times but Heaslip's statement after the weekend's fight elicited strong opinions from people.
The topic of McGregor's place in the Irish sporting pantheon was discussed on the Last Word this evening, with Paul Kimmage placing the fighter's worldwide fame ahead of any other competitor from this country.

"He is without question our most famous sportsman," Kimmage told Matt Cooper.
"Him or [Rory] McIlroy? I would give it to McIlroy but I won't deny his popularity.

"I've always found McGregor to be a really interesting person. It is easy to dismiss him as a braggart and a mouth. The first sense I had that this guy was special was in New York two years ago. I was there at Christmas with my son and he was on a Times Squares billboard. It is not easy to do that."

Kimmage revealed that although he is still 'repulsed' by MMA, he is more open to the sport after spending time with McGregor's coach, John Kavanagh, for a Sunday Independent interview.
Read more: Paul Kimmage meets John Kavanagh: My friendship with Conor, battling McGeeney and how we blagged our way into J-Lo's party

After talking with the MMA trainer, Kimmage looked to attend McGregor's fight at UFC 205 in Madison Square Garden last Saturday to the sport up close for himself.
However, despite applying for a press pass, Kimmage was turned down by the UFC.

"After finishing the interview with John Kavanagh, the first thing I did was apply to go and see the fight," Kimmage said.
"I was refused accreditation. It was a right slap to my ego!"An interesting debate on the merits of various Irish sportspeople was sparked by rugby star Jamie Heaslip over the weekend.

Full interview here from about 23.05 in http://www.todayfm.com/player/listen_back/7/33499/14th_November_2016_-_The_Last_Word_with_Matt_Cooper_Part_3

Interesting that the UFC refused Kimmage a press pass. Likely because he doesnt specifically cover MMA but part of me wonders does his expose of doping in cycling (and now rugby) mean he is not welcome in some quarters.

anyone know where there is a link for the interview matt cooper did with [ltr]@andrewmcgahon_[/ltr]. It was meant to be on the friday 11th night.

Same guy did one for Nate too, and will do one for each potential match-up.

    Edit: changed to working link

About as likely as him defending those belts.

Seriously though. No way would they give shares in the company to an active fighter. This would just add fuel to the "Conor gets to hand pick his opponents" accusations.

good point but maybe this is just a negotiation ploy to get more money, or maybe they can give him options to buy at a later date for price X. nothing would surprise me.

Conor really should look at his pay (3.5mill) and his ppv cut, probably around the 5mill mark, then take a good hard look at the pay of the lower fighters before he starts making these demands

I can see them offering some shares when he retires, but not while he's still active. Either this is a negotiation tactic like you said or just trolling his fans.

So you think he should just be happy with what he's got? No way. His mentality has got him to where he is paywise so why change.? He's also the reason other fighters are getting paid way more now.

I presume these celebrities invested their money in the ufc. What is stopping conor doing the same?

Or is he asking for it for free?

Why hes the one making the money he should be paid for it. Its not his job to make sure lower ranked fighters get paid.

Well considering how much money he's making the company, it's not for free.

    Not his problem.

They pay him his fight contract to fight. Im sure he can use the money they make as leverage to increase his purse. For this his numbers mean he has them over a barrel

I presume equity is a totally different proposition considering he is an independent contractor rather than an employee.

Thats what the ufc defence to everything is.

Explain what exactly their employment status is

Either way its veering away from my original question

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,882 ✭✭✭Saipanne

I think it's a conflict of interest to give him equity. They should just throw lots of cash at him. A lot more than he makes now.

its cool hoop i love ya, its just its used a fact all the time by people when we know its untrue. They are treated like employees when needed and when needed treated as contractors.

Suppose they can do that when the only one they pay well is Conor or his oppenent, keep the cheedar for the lawsuits and buy some nfl teams
