Alsure bolus. Had grass tested last year and in high moluidum area so it's locking up copper. It's trial and error at the moment. Will hopefully do cows next year.

We have to bolus for copper. How much per head does the alsure cost? You got great gains there!!

Not sure off hand but think about 10 euro . Best year so far but improving on breeding at the moment. Starting to Ai for replacement.

We use all sure too. We used coseicure one year and the results were disastrous. We give 8ml of vitesel 7 weeks before calving . a pre Calvert dust for 8 weeks also. We had terrible problems with calves slow to suck and not standing and having bad knees before but none since.

Was talking to agent there, very little bidding on culls at the minute. He said the main buyer bought none at last weeks mart here. Also commented that there's a serious amount of in calf cows going through the factory at the minute. Factory are not happy.

I do not think so if we get a price rise it will alst only until February. 120K more cattle to be killed next year. If kill is tight until February( and there was a strong kill from November on last year all through the winter) kill will be very high next year, That could translate into 3.5-4K/week extra on average from February on.

Is it really worth feeding them If you are not going to take them all the way to the hook? I had jan/feb calves no meal just milk and grass. Sold a few weeks ago 400/440kg €950/€1090

Will start finishing some maybe next year. Have no room and in the middle of expanding sheds at the moment and have a full time job so it easier manage sell as weanlings

It's not worth feeding a plain calf but if you've a bit of muscle in one it is the best way to give them that extra shine. It's hard to have all your calves 420 kg average at 10 months so you must be operating a fair bull and cows.

I see some of the marts with the new boards now so 4 or 5 stars should show up there.
From what I've seen it seems to add a few euros to them

    2 nice Belted Galloway heifers, Feb 2016, 290Kg, €515

    3 white char heifers, feb 2016, 348kg, €890
    5 Star saler heifers, feb 2016, 265kg, €550

I saw bit of Roscommon mart streaming tonight. Mixed prices. I noticed that the board declared wether suitable for export of not. What are the criteria for export?

Open to correction on this but I think TB test has a stricter reading and they have to be within 60 days of test.

These were very nervous types too. Nice enough shape but a bit too light for their age.

What about killing out, with Saler heifers.

I got a couple on a spur of madness, they were priced ok, first time I have them, doing well, and they are quite enough, which I was concerned about.

How are they for the kill out.

The Bulls seem to be poor sellers alrite but nice quality breeding heifers go big money in my local mart, my neighbour has Saler cows and they cross really well with his Charolais bull and sell well.
I've started putting easy calving Saler Bulls on the heifers here, it's hard to find out and out easy calving lim Bulls now. I'm going to try some of them for cows.
Salers have a reputation for being hard finished whether it's true or not i don't know. They're so hairy it's hard to know whats underneath it :pac:

Killed a couple nearly 10 years ago as bulls. Huge frames but hard to get them to fill out and not great to weight. If they came at the right price I chance them.
