Actually I'd disagree there and say what we need is a well thought out, logical Centrism to counter both the bombastic idiots of the right and the regressive leftists which have cropped up in the last few years. They're both as hysterical and ridiculous as each other.

I'm talking more about politicians like Sanders. Left-leaning but not 'radically' so. Socialist in the best possible way. Progressive without being absurd. It wouldn't be far-left and will almost certainly need to compromise in certain areas. Politicians who are logical and grounded and charismatic. I think the time for a sort of bland centrist middleground is just going to lead us back into the current cycle - we need people to really act for the disenfranchised and frustrated without giving into the fear-mongering of Trump and his ilk in the process. Compromise where warranted, absolutely.

The system is getting justifiably rattled, but needs to be rattled by different people. Perhaps that can be done by a centrist just as well as a leftist, but certainly IMO needs a more left-leaning approach than the current Democrats offer. Or, closer to home, something between the AAA/PBP and Labour party - Social Democrats being the current vague hope in that respect.

On a happier subject - want to try pick the names out over the weekend, so just a reminder about the Secret Santa thread again.

Unreleased and eventually cancelled Gamecube title 'Diddy Kong Racing Adventure'

I actually really like Diddy Kong racing on the N64, still play it. I think its underrated, at least as far as kart racing games go.

That N64 Rare aesthetic puts me off though. It's like they tried to copy Nintendo but just ended up making everything saccharine sweet and cute as if it was designed by committee.

Conker's tried to parody that but did it so badly. It reminds me of the recent sausage party film. Just swearing and crudity with no actual punch line to make it funny in the way South Park can.

As bad as Conker is, at least it didn't end up as this

The remnants of cute Conker are still in Diddy Kong Racing and the GBC game.

Probably my favorite kart racing game to be honest. I'm so sad they never made a sequel. I avoided the DS remake, not sure why.

    Diddy Kong Racing was brilliant!
I played it to death, the three sets of racing dynamics, the design of the tracks to take account of them, the catchy tunes, even the nifty hub world. Right up to the dodgy racist track host.
The DS port was incredibly competent, though it was dated after 10 years or so since it's release.
Plus, the changes wrought to the title due to the split between Rare and Ninty just felt tragic.

If you want a true sequel to Mario Kart 64 you could look to Mickey's Speedway USA, a Mario Kart sequel with a Disney respray, but dumping the prerendered sprites and gaining a much better look. I can't recall the decency of the battle mode though.

Mickey's Speedway is a bit basic though and the track design is half arsed.

Tell you what about Diddy Kong Racing, I'd take it any day over the blatant rip off that is Crash Team Racing. Not sure how that game has managed to gain such a good reputation. It's good enough but the track design is a mixed bag, weapons are unsatisfying and the physics are a mess as well as the frame rate. Not the classic Millenials are trying to say it is.

I was going to get all caught up in the 'must find a nes mini!' somewhere craze and then remembered I've a Famicom in the sitting room and a CIB nes in the attic.

Mad how the 'must have shiny new thing!' feeling gets into your brain.

That same feeling just made me buy an Xbox One Elite console, that and the €210 reduction in price. :D

Wouldn't a decent sized brick not have served the same purpose, plus they are pretty cheap... ;)

Anyone ever been to the Geek Mart in Dublin?
Apparently it's a monthly thing, I was thinking of rambling in.
    https://geekmartireland.com/
Looking at their fb page, seems like some comic stalls, a lot of homemade stuff and some retro games.
My mind says the games are likely to be pricey but will have a look any way.

Haha I just wish we got a sequel. I doubt it'll ever happen tbh. I heard the DS version had some dodgy controls involving stylus though? Or was I very much misinformed? :L

    Rage-esque pricing?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,766 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

    Rage-esque pricing?

Just a handful of embarrassing stall with home made stuff and a single professional stall of comics.
The "retrogaming" contribution amounted to some not so hot PS3/360/PS2 games and two Megadrive games.

Then around to RAGE where I talked myself out of buying a boxed Japanese copy of Legend of Mystical Ninja.

    Then home.....

So, I've had the NES Mini for a few days now. Very nice little device, decent emulation, fast loading, save support, can be powered from TV USB.
But, the controller cable is criminally short at about 3 feet and an extension is a must. As it uses the same connector and protocol as the Wii Remote connector an extension can be had for a few quid on Amazon/eBay (or use the Wii Classic Controller instead for a more comfy time and with support for "Home" button which brings you back to main menu).

But the worst thing about the whole setup, and one that really takes away from it is the fact that the CRT Emulation option(you have CRT, 4:3 and Pixel Perfect) emulates an RF/composite video signal with no option to just have tasty scanlines without the rf/composite blur and jitters, criminal I tells ya!

But, still a nice system, but not a patch on the AVS or similar(more pricey options).

Did anyone else watch the DF retro video on Tomb Raider. Some really interesting stuff in there about how the Saturn renders games.

Nice! I've heard, as you said, that the controller cable is way too short, what a shame!

    Sounds interesting.
Always loved the irony that the Saturn was seen in the West as distinctly uncool yet over of the games that, rightly wrongly, defined the generation was a Saturn game, at least initially. But then Core were a good supporter of the maligned Sega console.

Yep seen that alright and shortly after purchased the 5 TR PS1 games on ebay, pretty sure I already have some of them though..

Saturn was an interesting beast alright :)
