I think you need to read the orginial post. AA and LM cows not all LM. Good chance Black Lm cows. Even if not I imagine that the lesser prices were for the AA cows. 12-1400 for LM cows is enough for LM cows at present. Value the calf at 350-450 across bulls and heifers next April/May. I imagine that some of the lads buying them intend to calf them down and finish them.

Beef at present is back 30-40c/kg compared to this time last year. Last winter finishers made no money on finishing cattle. With prices of store I cann see lads making money unless factory base price is a nice bit above 4/kg. We are 40c/kg behind that at present. That is 160/head on suckler bred cattle. Last year lads expected 4.2/kg at Christmas they got 3.9/kg that is another 100 euro/head.

Dairy farmers are selling goodish cows for 11-1200/head. These are cows capable of turning over 1800-2100 euro in milk a year at 28c/L and a calf with an average value of over 100 euro once he/she hits the ground. If that man averaged 1200/cow and replaces them with dairy cows he is a hell of a lot better off.

Yes all black lim cows, as cows weren't plain or anything, IMO they were nice sucklers, only a handful made 1250-1460 but were very nice shapely cows

Picked up 8 suckler bred weanlings today 200kg ave. Plainish stock apr-june calves. Happy enough with price of €480. Better than buying sucks any day of week. ☺

Ballinasloe? Were they AA? Charolais with black noses? Bullocks l presume?

It's loads for them, considering the return on them. I know it's not enough if they've been reared straight through but it seems to be the way it's gone. Unfortunately I reckon the end is in sight for the suckler cow. Friesan calves all round from here on I'd say is on the menu.

Bought some Fresians in the last few days

    430kgs 625 euro (5 in No)
    505kgs 750euro (3 in No)
    440kgs 650 euro(2 in no) MOX's
    380kgs 570euro (single)
    445kgs 580 euro(single)

as well bought a bunch outside the ring 355kgs ( real hungry cattle) 460 euro

Mixture of good middle of the road with a few plain ones as well. Some are March and April cattle so good chance of getting QA on them. Not sure if I am right or wrong.

If you kept the money you would only end up paying tax on it i guess... you have to take the risk.. i see tillage lads going back at winter crops again and that would be a bigger risk game in my eyes!

I just look at it slightly different. The Fresians I sold this year on average went for a bit above 1200 euro. These lads came in at 600 euro. I managed to hold my margin. Happy enough with them as about 40-50% have a chance of making QA with ages etc. I am slightly changing my system will try to get them out earlier and get QA on the better FR bullocks that I have instead of powering on the weight into October. Only downside is that I am buying bullocks slightly later than last year. What I paid last year and what I get next yera is immaterial as long as I maintain the margin between the selling price of the stock bought last year (which are this years kill) and the purchases price cattle bought for next years kill.

I think this is what is killing farmers that deal in short term cattle and spring grazing, at certain times of the year you are competing with uneconomical buying compared to your selling price.

Would you be tempted to move up to Angus her types? Take lads bought 500 kg @ 750. Put a hundred to it you'd be into em at minute. 1.80 kg.

Would not be tempted by AA's in general good ones kill 340ish kgs at O+. Would have to put on a par weight for weight would have to puy nearly 200 with them to buy AA's. Was trying to buy a few HE but getting squeezed out (465kgs at 850). Had a few nice LMX cattle this year kiling 380kgs and AA on the cards:). The other factors is capital tied up. 50 Fresians will cost say 33K in the yard, 50 Herefords will cost 44K in the yard. 50 CHX could cost 55K.

Bob Charles always said this is the way lads should be looking at things. In fairness its more tangible. None of us have a crystal ball for the trade down the line.

I concur on the point of what money is invested however if you are wanting to kill earlier in the year ie July.
and hope to hit the qa the Angus and her tend to work out for this system.
Unless you can source the real good butty type. Bought good 5 good quality her last week March 15 478kg 870€. Tried damdest to put up picture but can't work it.

Nice square types. €1.80 was good going for them. Were they all in same lot? You planning a june finish?

4 and 1 all one mans. Heavy land here so early turn out never works out good. So either April finish or it'll be July.

Great weights, suitable for 16month bull beef. Charolais I presume.
