How many cows do you have

45, all outwintered. Only feed silage for about 6 weeks

Not many on the west coast could get away with that short feeding period

Would it have paid to feed them bulls and heifers about 2kg/day for last 40 days. At say 25c/kg it would have cost you 20 euro/head. You might even have squeezed another 2-3 euro off that depending on what you paid for the ration/nut.

An easy system is to have a fence or a gate with a trough they can come through for the ration.

I doubt it to be honest, I averaged 2.84/kg or 768e over the ten on a bad year and there was 6 inches of hair on them, farmers love hairy calves. If I fed them I'd have knocked it off them and they wouldn't have been half as saleable. If you take out the lad at 605 I should have left at home I'm up nearer 3e/kg. I seen 320kg Charolais paying less than mine tonight.

Ya I hear what your saying. Sometimes less really is more.and if it works for you than keep at it. Do you think the lighter weights were down to the year?

My own fault really, was too late closing silage and had no aftergrass for them. Just grazing rough rocky ground for the last 2 months and while the look lovely coming out of that kind of ground they never weigh. I'm happy enough anyway. All they got was 2 shots of blackleg vaccine and a worm dose. This time last year they would have been a bit heavier and averaged 100 a head more at least, with the year that's in it I'll take it. Most of the heifers have stars and had a few lads asking me at the mart about the after seeing the bulls so might get to shift a few of them at home.

It's a completely different system to be honest. Try to put as little as possible into them and pocket what you can. Lucky we can turn them up a mountain for 4-5 months and they survive away on it. A lot of our summer ground isint great though.

And me thinking you only had 16-17 cows.

I'm not stuck for cows at all, have a few too many if anything. Things would be a lot more comfortable with ten less and I'd have very little expense with them.

Lads have 3 Limousin bullocks to sell 18 month old. they are probably between 550 and 620. Should I sell them now or hold for a few weeks with the weather being dry?

Cannot see store price holding with factory price. Good article in today's FI in mart section regardiong prices. When weather really breakks I think stores will flood into marts and only one way they can go IMO.

What do people think of Saler X heifers, there was a pen of them at the mart today and they went for 670-680 a head, nice enough looking bout 400kg weight.

Are they worth a crack at for finishing next year.

Can't understand lads still paying crazy money for weanlings, store prices are sure to fall further. Saw 450kg black lim stores going for €900 last week yet lads will still pay over €900 for 300kg weanlings and €1100 for 400kg. Maybe they're been bought for the factories?

The guy selling 300kg weanlings for €900 isn't exactly cleaning up, is he? People buy the animal in front of them and how they expect it to be in12 months time. They don't pay much attention to weight or price per kg. Has always been that way.

There was a lad on here a few years ago Bob Charles that gave good advice. Buy the animal, not the weight.

Yeah. I used to enjoy reading his posts. I don't think he was ever reincarnated though?

Both bob and farmer pudsey gave a good insight into beef farming .I will always remember pudsey coming out with the price of jersey bull calves should be -50 euro as in the seller should give the buyer 50 euro with the calf

It is true to a certain extent. However if you look at average prices across breeds of animals at present hard to see a margin on lots of cattle going for finishing at present.

Jan Big black limo bull -390kg- €770
Feb red limo bull - 295kg-€600
2 Late march red limo bulls 282.5kg (ave) €680 each

Late march red limo heifer 270kg €635
Late march black limo heifer 280kg €530
Mid march red limo heifer 260kg €540

The heifers went through the ring late in day around 4:30pm

All prices back on mine from previous years.

Yes the suckler man is struggling too at that money.
The 450kg store should be hanging up in 12 months time. The 300kg weanling if squeezed would still just be a heavy store in 12months time and need to be housed for a few months before finishing. Surely the store is way better value?

Where were those light heifers sold? I'm in the market for a few light ones around 250kg to keep over the winter and out to grass in spring? When do ye think is best time to buy them budget around 500-550 each.

I think Pudsey might be hanging around alright - may even be making the odd contribution on this thread. ;) So best for that, good to have a few cute kerrymen on board!

Was in carnaross earlier and quite a few of this style heifers withdrawn under €600. Plainer continental weanlings were poor trade as were heavier lots.

Brexit really hitting the heifer trade, it seems.

No export the boat is keeping a floor on bull weanlings going to Turkey.
