Could probably drop one and take a bottle of lucozade instead - same amount of carbs as a gel...

To be honest I haven't a clue about gels and fuelling but the thought of 8 gels makes me queasy! I'd stick to what you trained with and maybe add a couple.

Oh my stomach is doing knots just thinking about taking 8 gels - I have taken 2 on my long runs and this is more than enough for me - its not like I will be starving myself for days leading up to it I plan to eat as normal so for me 2 gels is more than enough.
Finally got a physio appointment for tomorrow morning - he had a cancellation - its not my usual guy but he comes highly recommended so will be interesting to see what he has to say as at the minute :
    My quads are tight
My calfs are now also tight and sore
Have pain on bottom of left foot
Yea totally falling apart - a "friend " tells me this is all in my head and everyone will be experiencing fantom aches this week ???/ Anyway I will feel happier in myself after an appointment .
Of for the next 2 days - have been so busy at work havent had time to panic over Sunday so might start tomorrow !
Looks like I will make it to the expo on Saturday evening as I see it doesnt close till 7pm so I should make it to collect my number and then it will be back to the hotel for the evening and TRY and relax.

Same boat here partyjungle. I haven't been able to run over 13 miles in at least 5/6 weeks. My ankle is the reason. I was worried about the marathon last week, but I'm calm about it now.

I'm going to show up on Sunday with the objective of just finishing, I'll run it nice and slow and try to enjoy it. Any sort of finish is a result for me, if that entails some walking and pain - so be it. It's all experience and there will be another one to run soon.

Same here Partyjungle and Bunny Colvin. Got another 15 miles under my belt a fortnight ago after physio and 10 days of rest and ice. Missing the 3/4 shattered my confidence to the point where I nearly threw it all away after above mentioned 15 miles. Hubby talked me around so my plan is to run with the 5 hr pacer and hope for the best. It's a slower pace than i've ever run so i'm hoping pace, patience, adrenaline and the crowds keep me going to the finish line.

Kittyclaws...if you've run combining lucozade and gels in the past then happy days but if not a word of warning. I drank a bottle just before the start of a half marathon and then took gels at miles 3 and 8. Ended up diving into a ditch at mile 10...mortified!!!!

Had my last physio this morning so it's in the lap of the gods right now. Ran 5km before the rub down and i was shattered after it. I'm so looking forward to this being over.

So any ideas on when ye are going to Expo? General advice seems to be to get in early Friday if possible. My plan is collect daughter from school and head in with her.. She's into the running so figure she may find it interesting.

I too will be tempted by some nice DCM gear.. but could that be tempting faith! Might trip on a banana skin going out the door and break a leg..:pac::eek:

I think I'll bring 5 and aim for one every 5 miles.
I've drank lucozade all tru training and luckily no adverse effects when combined with the gels - quite the opposite, I felt like Poppeye eating spinach when I had a bottle at mile 18 on my last LSR :D

Thanks for the advice all :) xx

+1 to what chickey2 says. You should approach the marathon as you approached your longest LSRs, just extended. If you are used to taking ~6 gels on your 20-milers, then you can maybe stomach them. But if you're not used to taking so many, then don't. Their effect isn't instantaneous, so I certainly wouldn't consider taking them later than 20-21M. At that point, you probably can't stomach much food anyway (if you can, that'd be great, but don't count on it). Also, carrying 7-8 gels through the day can be challenging!

FWIW, I used max 2 gels during the long LSRs, and I think I used 4 during the day itself (can't quite remember to be very honest). So not drastically different, just a little more.

Concentrate on the healthiest wholemeal diet for this week. Plenty of protein early in the week, focus on carbs later in the week (again, without overdoing it). That, combined with a couple of gels (and maybe some jelly beans from some spectating kid on Foster's Avenue) should see you through.

I'll be in at around 12:05 on Friday. I'm generally an impatient person.

You're similar enough to me, the confidence definitely took a hit but we will be alright.
Don't put too much pressure on yourself! I don't know about you but showing up to a start line of a marathon is something I couldn't have dreamed of a year ago. Nothing has been wasted either, I was just about comfortable doing a distance of 10k when I signed up to this thread and now I've 18 miles under my belt. There's a lot of positives to take, no matter what happens Sunday!

I'm gonna put 4 gels in my belt and if that's not enough then I'll take some Lucozade Sport on the course. I've only ever taken a max of 2 gels in training and even then I didn't especially want the second one.

I only started at the end of January Bunnycolvin. As you say...turning up was a dream then but this is a very emotionally driven run for me so plenty of motivation in my reason alone!!! Totally agree on the positives too...it's funny how the world turns cos when my dad ran all those marathons years ago i'd laugh at him and say he was crazy running. Of his 3 children I was the least likely to do this!!!!

3 gels and jelly babies for me. I was fine on my 21 miler with this so maybe a 4th gel just in case.

8 gels seems excessive to me. Why every 3 miles?

Don't they have gels available at 16 miles and 21 miles ? do you need to carry eight ? I bought a gel belt on ebay and the bloody thing is useless, went out on Sunday morning with 4 gels in it and they all fell out. I am going to use a cycling top with 3 pockets in the back to house my gels and key. May consider butchering it to cut the sleeves off if no rain is forecast. Bit concerned about what the weather will bring us , hope its not very gusty with lots of rain . I am going to rub deep heat or wintergreen onto my exposed legs and arms and around shoulders . I always did this in the past marathons and felt the benefit of it. I will be running a lot slower now so it should stand me in good stead. Getting really excited now ,. when I did it before there were only about 7000 entrants and it was not as glamorous as it is now. Really looking forward to the crowds and the buzz on the day !! feel like a kid before Christmas . I am " pathetic " my wife says but she is smiling

I fold mine over between the belt and my body in my gel belt and they stay in pace. I'm using the gel belt that was in the goodie bag at the fingal 10k.

I think they only have the ordinary gels on the day so no good for anyone looking for the easier on the tummy iso gels.

The best of luck on Sunday, have to admit your first post here really impressed/inspired me.

Yep expect parking will be OK on the Friday morning/early afternoon... famous last words!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

They have gels on the course but don't rely on them. they might run out or you might miss them or they might not have the flavour you like. ..
Same problem if you arrange to meet people with gels or food on the course, you might miss them in the crowd, they might have gone to the wrong place or got stuck in traffic.

Anything you NEED, bring with you. anything else is a bonus

Have just been too busy for boards of late but am caught up and can't wait to get this thing done!

    Goals:

Everything goes perfectly A goal <4:19:59
Much more realistic B Goal <4:29:59
Totally stealing NOPs C Goal - high-five every kid coming in from Donnybrook and cross the finish line with a smile on my face.

Pacing strategy 10/10/10, starting toward the back of wave 3.

Regarding gels on course - the website says there will be high 5 gels and high 5 isogels at miles 16 and 21. Although I don't remember seeing them last year. I've used a high 5 belt in the past and it held the high 5 gels perfectly. I ahd one with a little zip pocket on it as well I used for electrolyte tablets. They'll probably have them at the expo. I'll be taking 5 with me and if I need more I'll try and grab some on the course.

    Hi Folks :)

As nop said previously we will be out on the course on the day, just before the 21 mile marker so as you're coming around onto Clonskeagh road we will be along the wall where the red dot is (or as close to that as space/crowds allow) on the left hand side of the road.

We will post more pics later in the week of what will make us uniquely identifiable :p

Hi all, just saw a video on iarnrod eireann Twitter page. Extra Dart services for the marathon Sunday 7.05 from Malahide to Connolly and 6.45 from greystones to grand canal dock. No service running between Connolly and grand canal all weekend due to works!

Got such a laugh out of Singers map, work of art! Taper madness and nerves setting in already. The course video really makes it seem like a long way..... But I will TRUST THE PLAN!!

Will do. I have the day off so planning to browse a bit. Pretty sure I'll be going home with something I don't need.
Yes thanks, cold avoided (so far). Three nights sleeping by myself did the trick, but probably didn't do too much for the marriage!

That would be past the crowds on the road back into Ranelagh.

Did you mean to put it on the left as you head to Ashtons on Clonskeagh Rd?

I had fully intended to go to the expo on Friday after work, getting there for approx. 4pm, however I have the offer of my number being collected for me.... so a question....is the expo worth the trip? (I live on the Kildare/Wicklow border, approx. 1hr away from the RDS, with no traffic!!)

    So who is wearing headphones?

I'll be bringing mine along, might stick them on at some point if I'm struggling!
