Have you seen the official DCM 2016 jackets on their FB page?
I only bought a new running jacket, and €55 is a bit expensive...
    Still buying one tho!

    Berlin jacket was €70.

Novices! You've all done a great job making it this far, and I'm sure you'll all have an very painful but ultimately satisfying day on Sunday. I have two pieces of very important advice to add to the ever growing list of things to remember on the day (it's actually more a marathon of remembering things to do than a running marathon).

    1. Drop out now!!! That way you'll be able to tag along to next year's novices thread! :D

    2. For the first time ever, the Dublin Marathon has actually been extended in distance. Scurrilously, there'll be a fake finish line setup to look just like an actual marathon finish line, full of people pretending to have just finished a marathon in some sort of weird Truman-show kind of way. The real map of the finishing line looks like this:

    399981.png

As you can see from the expertly drawn map, you need to continue past the so-called "Finish", and continue running past the area where you'll be offered medals, t-shirts etc. - don't bother stopping, it's all part of the cunning mindgames that have inexplicably been added as part of DCM 2016. Don't forget to get a few strides in before the bag collection area and jog on the spot as you wait for your bag to be collected! From there you accelerate up to 5k pace around Merrion Square and up a dingy looking laneway, ending up just outside the real finishing line which looks like this:

    img89.jpg

Best of luck, and hopefully see you at the REAL finish line  :pac:

    Love that map!

Can't believe that its this Sunday. I didn't do enough LSR training. Nothing I can do about it now. My objective is to finish. Five hours seems reasonable, roughly 7 minutes per km. I hope my legs don't completely give up on me after 30km. This is gonna be very tough but I will dig deep.

Same boat here partyjungle. I haven't been able to run over 13 miles in at least 5/6 weeks. My ankle is the reason. I was worried about the marathon last week, but I'm calm about it now.

I'm going to show up on Sunday with the objective of just finishing, I'll run it nice and slow and try to enjoy it. Any sort of finish is a result for me, if that entails some walking and pain - so be it. It's all experience and there will be another one to run soon.

Nice to know I'm not the only one. I've heard some terrible advice of attempting a sub 4hr time for as long as I'm able then slowing down appropriately. Surely that is suicide. If I have to be out there running for an extra half an hour then I need to, so be it. As long as it minimises the chances of me having to pull out.

I never got one last year (didn't even think about it) and I really regret it. It wasn't the money, I just went into the Expo, got my number, and went back home. In hindsight, I would have liked to look around a little. I'll go in on Friday afternoon this year to make amends! :)

B.t.w. not affiliated to the merchandize sale crowd in any way!

On the other hand, I do have the finisher t-shirt! :D But I believe it was Singer who told me at the Raheny 5M that he never runs in it, as it means you'd have to wash it and it'll wear out. Now I don't want to run in it anymore either!

I meant to pull together all the different posts from this and last year's novices thread, that describe the course, or at least parts thereof. Just a little too swamped in work to really do it justice, so this will have to do for now:

    2016 Course-preview
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-aUnVZTQOg
    2016 Map-preview
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfFj-iabvBw

    2014 look-back
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHzvv2pmQGE
2014 course preview (which is slightly different at the start and at the finish)
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showp...&postcount=754

I do recall TFGR and others writing great posts about parts of the course, and there's also really good stuff on this thread already. If anyone has a link to any of them, and has time on their hands, please reply, copy in the URLs, so we have a nice reference guide with all the available.

I think you know yourself. The last LSR I did, I went too fast and the pain hit on the 13 mile mark, I just threw in the towel as it would have been stupid running through it with the marathon so close. My plan is too run it slow and stay in it for as long as possible, going too quick might mean walking the last half and no one wants that.

Adrenaline will probably carry you a long way but it's all on the day. As long as you make the start line in one piece, you've a good chance of finishing.

A bit of a early best of luck to everyone taking on the Marathon for the first time this year. I survived this thread and the marathon last year and it was a great experience.

Get to help out this year as a steward around the Terenure area so if i see any one i notice from the previous years ill give you a cheer.

As a final test to see if I am fast enough for a sub 4 hr I am going to run now for 4 hours on the treadmill at a constant speed of 10.6 kph .

Getting everything ready now for the big day!!
I had my name printed on my top today and I'm now writing my to-do list for Thurs - Sunday (lists are great - otherwise I'll lie awake at night wondering if i forgot anything!)

I was going to take a gel every 3 miles on the day - is this too many? Looking to do 12+ minute miles for the first half, then try drop my time from Walkinstown roundabout onwards. I've never taken more than 3 gels and some shot blocs before on a long run - but I want to have enough energy for miles 20 onwards, unknown territory.
I always have one before I start a race - so that's 8 gels in total....
Also what mile should I stop taking gels at?

8 gels seems excessive to me. Why every 3 miles?

Back from my physio session. He certainly went a good bit deeper than the last time. When I was changing afterwards, I had to laugh when I looked in the mirror and saw the red marks on my leg :D

Anyway, it looks and feels much better. Physio advised that there will be some discomfort in the ITB....but sure you're expecting some kind of pain running a marathon anyway, no? In addition, health wise I'm well over the worst of my dose, so I should be raring to go on Sunday morning. The only running I plan in the meantime is a little 2 mile tip around on Saturday to stretch the legs a bit.

I wouldn't advise taking gels so often, too many can be hard on the stomach. If you've used three on your 20 mile LSR's then maybe do the same on the day and take your last one around mile 20, that should see you right for the last 6 miles.

I was told to take 60g of carbs an hour to replace what I'm using as fuel - so two gels = 64g.
Could probably drop one and take a bottle of lucozade instead - same amount of carbs as a gel...

I dunno, might be better to go for a pint first and go back at the end of the day to get your bag when the crowds have all gone home. Ensures a better table in McGrattans too!

This Taper is tough going.. So I've got the mandatory "Taper" cold and now yesterday evening, having not run for 2 days, I've got a pain in my calf.. Aargh!

Only occurs when walking up stairs and is there for maybe 2-3 steps then is gone again. Did not bother me at all on 2+M run earlier either so I am a bit baffled. Has all the feeling of a cramp but just cannot figure it out. If I press deeply into the calf I can slightly feel it but nothing that makes for any real pain.

Anyway.. have physio booked in the morning (Originally not for anything specific but now I think he will need to help me out..:()

Going to ice it and plenty of anti inflammatory, plus lots of water and other stuff to combat the cold. Hopefully all be good for Sunday..;)

Whoever said that the Taper is difficult, was very right!

That sounds like a great idea to me , we wouldnt want to be too weighted down with a medal and a bag.
