All things considered it has been a glorious October.

I recall the last two years we've had great weather in December. It was almost short sleeve stuff just before Christmas in '14 if I remember rightly.

Up North Spring starts in March. Only found out a couple of years ago and thought it was mentalist chat. But seems on reflection to be a fair call. Feb was baltic and nothing seemed to be sprouting til March this year. August is typically more reliably Summery than May.

This mild chat is getting fierce wild all of a sudden.

Ok firstly seasons according to Met Eireann are:

    Winter: December, January February
    Spring: March, April, May
    Summer: June, July August
    Winter: December, January, February

    Met Eireann website says
For Climatological purposes, on the basis of air temperature, seasons are regarded as three - month periods as follows: December to February - winter, March to May - spring, June to August - summer and September to November - autumn. This is a common grouping in the meteorological practice of many countries in the middle and northern latitudes.

Here is a link to the webpage.Go to the 'Seasons' section.

Makes perfect sense. How can August be Autumn when it's the hottest time of year and peak summer holiday season.

Also, even by your own erroneous dates, October is Autumn, so how can a mild October make Winter shorter.

You can see the autumnal colours in the trees.

What the Americans call fall colors.

How can the mid summer solstice be only 20 days into a three summer, and also the mid-winter solstice 20 days into a three month summer. Met Eireann can claim what they like, but unless they've moved the sun they're wrong.

But the Met Office considers the seasons to be a month later than you e.g. Spring starts in March, Summer starts in June, Autumn starts in September and Winter in December

Nah thats just a myth that Spring starts on Feb 1st

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Not being rude, but I don't care what they claim. They can't even get a forecast correct half the time to be fair.

    The nights are drawing in…

You'd imagine winter would run from Samhain till Lá Féile Bríde, but after all February is often the coldest month; it's the one I'd expect snow in if there's going to be snow.

Tis cold the last week OP mainly because without fail, I'm an unfortunate man who's nipples evolve into tic tacs when it gets cold so no tight fitting clothes for me since last week.

It's some old Celtic bunkum. Dec/Jan/Feb is winter and frankly March can often be included!

Or possibly the climate has changed since back then-o, and the seasons have shifted or some have lengthened and others shortened…
