All things considered it has been a glorious October.

I recall the last two years we've had great weather in December. It was almost short sleeve stuff just before Christmas in '14 if I remember rightly.

Up North Spring starts in March. Only found out a couple of years ago and thought it was mentalist chat. But seems on reflection to be a fair call. Feb was baltic and nothing seemed to be sprouting til March this year. August is typically more reliably Summery than May.

This mild chat is getting fierce wild all of a sudden.

Ok firstly seasons according to Met Eireann are:

    Winter: December, January February
    Spring: March, April, May
    Summer: June, July August
    Winter: December, January, February

    Met Eireann website says
For Climatological purposes, on the basis of air temperature, seasons are regarded as three - month periods as follows: December to February - winter, March to May - spring, June to August - summer and September to November - autumn. This is a common grouping in the meteorological practice of many countries in the middle and northern latitudes.

Here is a link to the webpage.Go to the 'Seasons' section.

Makes perfect sense. How can August be Autumn when it's the hottest time of year and peak summer holiday season.

Also, even by your own erroneous dates, October is Autumn, so how can a mild October make Winter shorter.

How can the mid summer solstice be only 20 days into a three summer, and also the mid-winter solstice 20 days into a three month summer. Met Eireann can claim what they like, but unless they've moved the sun they're wrong.

But the Met Office considers the seasons to be a month later than you e.g. Spring starts in March, Summer starts in June, Autumn starts in September and Winter in December

Nah thats just a myth that Spring starts on Feb 1st

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Not being rude, but I don't care what they claim. They can't even get a forecast correct half the time to be fair.

    The nights are drawing in…

You'd imagine winter would run from Samhain till Lá Féile Bríde, but after all February is often the coldest month; it's the one I'd expect snow in if there's going to be snow.

Or possibly the climate has changed since back then-o, and the seasons have shifted or some have lengthened and others shortened…

In most countries the seasons start on the solstices so Summer starts on June 21st and Winter on December 21st.

The midsummer thing is to do with Celtic/Pagan traditions and the old calendar system.

Weatherwise they are not wrong. Weather lags day length by about a month due to the heating of the ocean effect.

I always feel it is the desire to have equal length seasons that gives rise to the feeling that the seasons are 'unseasonal'. Winter and summer should be 4 month seasons, Nov-Feb, and May-Aug. Mar-Apr Spring, and Sept-Oct Autumn. It just feels more inline with the weather, growth, leaves falling, timing of holidays, etc.

No the midsummer thing and the solstice thing has got to with the earths rotation around the sun, and the length of the days accordingly. The pagans spotted this and made festivals around it, but they didn't invent time and made the days accordingly.

The summer solstice is the day of the year where the length of the days peaks and starts moving the opposite way, so after the summer solstice the days start to get shorter. Winter solstice is the opposite, hence why they're classed mid-summer and mid-winter respectively.

Great so totally dismiss scientific evidence and believe some ancient hocus pocus.

Also, weather forecasts are very hard to do in a climate like ours but weather is nothing to do with our climate.

There is a differnce, between weather and climate and the seasons.

Yes, but it's not relevant any more. It's not midsummer or midwinter for anyone except pagans, druids etc.

No; the solstices exist. 100% but they are not midsummer or midwinter.

They notify the length of the day.

Ireland's climate is very unpredictable because we're on the boundary between polar air and tropical air, thus creating instability. It's not just a Met Eireann thing: http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-17223307
