It's gotta be an n/a whatever it is - no matter what turbos fail at one point or another - I'll take a shot at the 2.0d that has propelled the carina et all about the place for a few decades now with incredible reliability. Lots of 6 cyl lumps are close or ahead too - nissan 4.0 but don't think it was in many cars, toyota 4.2 straight but again, its a utility engine..

Skoda Octavia seems a good runner, i remember Skoda looking for high milers like this one

A lad I work with has an 01 320d that has 570k miles on the clock and is on its original turbo. He said he'll drive it till it dies which may take quite a while.He's owned the car from new so it's been well looked after and has never been abused. It's had 2 clutches in that time.

Nope, they're still going because they were all bought by 70 year old men who do 4 miles per week.

My vote is with the Peugeot XUD for a car engine, closely followed by the Carina diesel.

But if we include utility engines, then Toyota's 4.2 1H engines are unbelievable.. used in trucks, buses, 4x4s, and keeping Africa, the middle east and much of the developing world afloat in the worst of conditions, with little or no servicing..

Fiat 1.9 diesel engines in the earlier cars are up there in terms of reliability.

The 1.8D XL Corollas - I'm sure every taxi and hackney in Ireland was a Corolla at one stage. Reliable for at least 400,000 miles they said.
