I am kinda leaning towards the pre 2000 Avensis, which had the same engine as the Carina before it, that was a great engine. What would you choose?

Yes I'd say Avensis or the Octavia of the early 2000 era.

Depends if its the 1HZ engine in that cruiser. I've got a 1HZ in mine and it'll go forever.

Anything with the old Peugeot xud diesel. We have an old 205 1.8d and it's bulletproof!

Has to be the Audi 90 1.9e . Friend of mine who had One had 600,000 miles on it before he got rid of it in 2002.

It's gotta be an n/a whatever it is - no matter what turbos fail at one point or another - I'll take a shot at the 2.0d that has propelled the carina et all about the place for a few decades now with incredible reliability. Lots of 6 cyl lumps are close or ahead too - nissan 4.0 but don't think it was in many cars, toyota 4.2 straight but again, its a utility engine..

All good cars, But away from diesel, there are many many farmers still rocking the 1.3 corolla engine of the world

Skoda Octavia seems a good runner, i remember Skoda looking for high milers like this one

    http://www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/69070/skoda-on-the-hunt-for-high-mileage-cars

'Skoda Ireland has launched an online competition searching for high mileage Skoda cars.

The competition was inspired by a 2002 Skoda Octavia, which came to their attention when Skoda Ireland was contacted on Facebook by a young man named Robert Sullivan.

Robert Sullivan was looking to part company with a 1.9 TDI, 90bhp Ambiente Octavia that was in his family’s possession for the past 11 years. Skoda took it in, gave it a service, a fine tune and complete valet. It passed its NCT on first attempt and is now the veteran of its press fleet. This car currently has 512,743 miles / 825,179km on the clock and Skoda now has set the challenge; can this be beaten?'

    OM601, used in Mercedes W124.

A lad I work with has an 01 320d that has 570k miles on the clock and is on its original turbo. He said he'll drive it till it dies which may take quite a while. He's owned the car from new so it's been well looked after and has never been abused. It's had 2 clutches in that time.

    OM603/611
    XUD9 TE
    Sofim 8140.63

Each with multiple.examples of high milage and not much else outside basic servicing

    Nothing else really comes close...

I wonder if the Rover 75/ MG ZT deserves a mention, I don't think they sold in huge numbers here but there are still a good few knocking about.

Nope, they're still going because they were all bought by 70 year old men who do 4 miles per week.

My vote is with the Peugeot XUD for a car engine, closely followed by the Carina diesel.

But if we include utility engines, then Toyota's 4.2 1H engines are unbelievable.. used in trucks, buses, 4x4s, and keeping Africa, the middle east and much of the developing world afloat in the worst of conditions, with little or no servicing..

I wouldn't limit this to one engine model only of the whole family. All OM61x (615, 616, 617) are great.
    Same for OM60x (601, 602, 603, 605, 606).

Fiat 1.9 diesel engines in the earlier cars are up there in terms of reliability.

L-series diesel from Rover has to be up there.

The 1.8D XL Corollas - I'm sure every taxi and hackney in Ireland was a Corolla at one stage. Reliable for at least 400,000 miles they said.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,055 ✭✭✭selectamatic

In terms of cars as a whole I'd have it as
Carina ii & corolla e90 with 1c or 2c engine
Followed closely by the carina e and e10 corolla with the 2c engine.

Lots of excellent engines in their own right mentioned above.
Surprised no one mentioned the isuzu 4ee1 and the redeveloped 4ee2 1.7d engines very robust lumps

Had one of those (van) in a security job in the 80s. We all drove the absolute crap out of it. Had about 700k km on it back then, no doubt it made it to a million km

Very, very few cars vans cheap carvans made it to a million km in the 80s...

Lads were using miles in the 80s, is this 700k a bar stool tale?

That is rubbish. Most Diesel engines made up to early 1990's are very reliable.

Yep thats the reason they are popular in developing countries.
No spark needed just compression and fuel.

Yeah, and these are the only engines that would be unaffected by an... electromagnetic pulse bomb :). They will get going as if nothing happened.
