Hello log....it's been 6 weeks since my last confession. Thought about just jumping in from now but might as well keep the log continuous, just in case for future reflection!

To catch up. Week beginning 29/08, very little after the Raheny 2 mile on the Tuesday. Football on Wednesday, a wedding on the Thursday and then flying out on the Friday to Greece for two weeks. I packed the runners, but no Garmin so I just ran by time. Stuck to short, easy runs just to keep the legs ticking over while gone. I don't work well with the heat so I had no notion of anything too long or speedy. We stayed by the airport on the Friday night and it had a small gym so I did 30 minutes on the treadmill before we left on the Saturday. Rest on the Sunday then.

    Week beginning 05/09

    Monday - 45 mins easy

A lovely run along the cliffs, partly on flagstones and then on dirt trails. Winding along with the sea on one side, blue skies, gorgeous sea....it feels like a distant memory. Supposed to only be 35 minutes but I was faced with ending on a mad uneven time number, finishing after a near vertical incline or taking the long way around said incline. I went with the latter :D Greek runners were not receptive to the nod or wave

    Tuesday - 35 mins easy

Up out early for this, a warm up to the 9-hundred and something steps to see an old castle

    Wednesday - Rest

    Thursday - 30 mins easy

A sweaty sufferfest through a hilly rural village. I got alot of peculiar looks from the locals, I don't think they see many runners.....

    Friday - Rest

    Saturday - 35 mins easy

New town, a nice evening run along the sea watching the sunset. A tad jealous of people sitting around drinking in the cafes but the views were fab. Was like being in the West of Ireland with the scenery, except for the heat!!

    Sunday - Rest

    Week beginning 12/09

    Monday - Rest

    Tuesday - 35 mins

Same as the last day. Early morning run and I had a thirst on me with the heat, was thinking of a San Pellegrino by halfway through (thanks mrsmc!!). No drink on me but I finished up just by the beach and the water looked so refreshing and appealing and we were leaving shortly to head inland fr the last few days. The beach was empty and I figured the running undergarments would look no different to a bikini from afar so I took the opportunity for a cheeky dip. Had to then put the running gear back on over and arrived home soaked to the amusement of the OH.

    Wednesday - Friday - Rest

Great holiday, would highly recommend the Peloponnese. Between sites to explore, swimming most days and a fair bit of hiking I kept reasonably active, as well as the running.

    Saturday - Parkrun

Up and at them bright and early after a late night arrival (and a rucksack disaster thanks to broken glass of honey) and took it easy with annapr at St. Anne's. Time was 30:01 - much nicer temperature for running!

    Sunday - Rest

Hosted a family birthday on the Saturday night (a very relaxing return from hols ) so was shattered. Legs were killing me after all the prep on Saturday and being on my feet all day and night so just chilled out on the couch. Reality loomed so plenty of running ahead!!

Will be up to date by weekend.......repeat after me.....Will be up to date by weekend.......

    Catch up continued....

    Week beginning 19/09

    Monday - 45 mins easy: 4.33 miles @ 10:24

I'm told I ran today by the electronics

    Tuesday - Rest

    Wednesday - Football

    Thursday - Pilates

    Friday - 45 mins easy: 4.45 miles @ 10:06

    Runmute into work

    Saturday - St. Anne's parkun 29:27

Windy parkrun, flying solo today. Tired after a few drinks the night before

    Sunday - 60 mins easy: 5.82 miles @ 10:19

Over at my dad's house early afternoon. Started this from the homestead and took in some of St Anne's before heading home direction.

17.69 miles for the week. All easy runs, decided it was best to get some consistency together and add in the ancillary stuff post holidays before including speedwork. Usual commute cycling, football and pilates all being added in this week. There may have been one gym trip before work, or it was the following week. Only one though so not exactly earth shattering either way!! Body feeling a bit tired adjusting to everything again and foot showing some occasional "awareness" after being out of routine but nothing major or unexpected.

Yes we are all waiting patiently for the xc debut !!!

    Week beginning 26/09

    Monday: 4.79 miles inc 6x400m

Time for speedwork, new plan starting and Monday means session evening. It's very similar to what I was doing previously, nothing too drastically different. Some suggested paces are slightly faster and the structure of some sessions a bit different but all on the same wavelength.

Target pace for these was 107 seconds, as before not to get too hung up on it, recoveries were 400m after each interval.

    10 minutes w/u @ 10:12
    106s, 111s, 97s, 104s, 106s, 101s
    11ish minutes c/d @ 10:45

As usual I found these tough, although not as tough as when I first started. Not sure what what happened on that third one.....

    Tuesday: Rest

    Wednesday: 30 mins easy - 2.85 miles @ 10:33

With weekly plans it suited best to do my second session on the Wednesday. Set out with that intention but the legs were very tired after Monday still, no pep in them at all. Listened to the body and kept it short, sweet and easy.

    Thursday: Pilates

Friday: 4.77 miles inc fartlek intervals

What a difference two days make. Legs much better, felt very fresh for this.

Session was 3*(2 mins hard, 1 min jog, 1 min hard, 30 sec. jog, 30 sec. hard, 30 sec. jog) with the hard pace to be 7:37 and 5 minutes between sets

    10 mins w/u @ 10:03
    Hard paces
    Set 1 - 7:32, 7:43, 7:17
    Set 2 - 7:33, 7:30, 7:43
    Set 3 - 7:21, 7:44, 7:14

    10 mins c/d @ 10:27

Very manageable session although hard to judge the pace right with the short intervals, taking the garmin with a pinch of salt. The short recoveries are tough, hardly have time to really catch your breath. Suitably tired after and got absolutely drowned on the way home!!

    Saturday: Parkrun - 29:13

Off to St. Anne's for their third birthday celebration. With one pair of runners drying out from the night before the other pair weren't long in following with some of the wettest conditions I've ever run in!!! Miserable, didn't even bother with the rainjacket as it was too sodden on the dash just from the car. Splashed around the course with annapr for this one. Probably not as easy as it should have been after the session but a fine spread of cakes and warm drinks were waiting at the finish!! Great morning with the usual suspects.

    Sunday: 70 mins easy - 6.88 miles @ 10:11

This should have been a struggle. Out in Limerick the night before, slightly hungover, tired from not much sleep, a big fry for breakfast, few hours in the car, groggy after an afternoon nap - not the best preparation. Planned on 60 mins but miscalculated my route and had to tag on an extra ten. I could have added more, I felt great, the legs felt fresh and bouncy and it seemed like I could have gone on for ages more. Longest run since August before hols as well. Go figure!

22.37 miles for the week. Happy with that, back to consistency and speedwork added plus the cycling etc.

Ok, going to get up to XC in before MOTD.....

    Week beginning 03/10

Monday: 4.66 miles inc interval repeats

Monday evening, session evening. Off to my new usual spot where the locals probably think I'm a lunatic going around in circles.

    Plan was 2*(200m, 200 jog, 200m, 400 jog, 600m, 400m jog) with target paces 54s for 200m and 163s for 600m and 5 minutes between sets.

    10 minutes w/u @ 10:18
    Set 1 - 54s, 54s, 166s
    Set 2 - 49s, 49s, 168

    10ish minutes c/d @ 10:27

I hate 600's. Like really hate them. Hate. Them. I'd say it's because I go out too fast and then am hanging on. Or maybe I'm supposed to find them harder. 200's are tough but then they're over. 400's are tough but you can get a groove and work into them. Whereas 600's are my nemesis.

    Tuesday: Rest

    Wednesday: 35 mins easy - 3.41 miles @ 10:16

    Local Raheny loop.

    Thursday: Pilates

    Friday: 45 mins easy - 4.41 miles @ 10:12

    Runmute into work.

Saturday: 4.4 miles inc Teachers 2 mile Cross Country

With BungyGirl acting as the biggest ambassador for xc I agreed to this a couple of months ago. I'm pretty sure there was alcohol consumption involved at the time!! I was assured it would be a good intro to xc given that it was about 15 years since my school xc experiences and that no spikes were needed. With aquinn oozing reassurances and much talk of elbows I collected BG at 7:30am to head to the race. I jest, it wasn't really that early but maybe you believed it for a second......

Arrived in plenty of time and climbed a wooden barrier to get to out of the carpark. Got a splinter, off to a great start. Got registered and set off for a lap of the course. Plenty of tips from BG about the course, xc running in general and filled with my xc research about "slingshotting" out of corners BG pointed out a perfect slingshot corner where a restricted view would give a chance to open up a sneaky gap on any competition.

Lined up feeling a little nervy and aware that time, pace, course accuracy and watch watching weren't the order of the day - that it was all about places. Tried not to set out too fast as I didn't know how it was going to go. About a quarter mile in there was what I can only describe as a vertical bank of grass ahead. Hmmm, upward I scrambled afraid I was going to fall. Settled into a rhythm, spotted two women ahead and set them as my targets to beat. Went past one after a half mile. Tried to use any downhills and corners to propel myself onwards. The terrain wasn't too bad, no real muck and the grass wasn't too long or unsteady underfoot. Going around the pitches and the long stretch the other woman was ahead so I overtook and did my best to go past decisively.

The legs were feeling tired starting the second lap, the different conditions to road running was definitely sapping on the laps, especially that uphill bank. The next woman ahead was a good bit on so I just tried to stay with the group of men that were about me and go past any when possible. I could see the woman behind me still thereabouts so staying ahead of her was my main aim. Coming to my restricted view corner I was ready to push on but two men were ahead side by side blocking my route. They parted slightly however and I took the chance to slip though. I was hanging after the corner as I was directed to the finishing route for the 2 mile. I had been warned that xc courses could measure off but I was horrified as the watch vibrated for 2 miles with the finish nowhere near!! On the dash for the finish I could plainly see how far the gap was, it seemed like I was far enough ahead but was paranoid she'd have a better finish so I pushed as much as I could. Felt happy with my mini battle I'd set myself as I crossed the line until shortly after I heard the announcer call out the name of my personally set competition and her age. Which was 70. Anywaaaaaay, cool down and lots of nibbles after and BG getting a prize!

Race time was 17:23 on the garmin - 7:50, 8:14 for the two miles and 1:19 @ 6:50 pace for the .19 extra.

Think I'll give xc another go. This was a good intro so would be intrigued to see what it's like on a proper muddy course!!

    Sunday: 70 mins easy - 6.95 miles @ 10:04

Met a friend for this one and did the same loop as the previous week. Lovely evening for it.

    23.84 miles for the week

I hear ya on the 600s! 163 seconds seems very fast - more or less the same pace as your 200s ? No wonder you're not feeling the love for them!

Well done on your XC debut. That was some pace on the home stretch! Great report which will hopefully encourage others currently on the fence to give it a shot.

Maybe it's why there's so few of them! Only did them once on the last block and once on this. Hopefully they're helping with a finishing kick perhaps? I did hit my max hr at the end of the xc.

Absolutely, I'd been toying with the xc idea since last year before I got the PF. Really glad I gave it a shot now. Good to do something a bit different and I'd say the different surface all helps add to the overall training. I'm intrigued now for the next one :)

Sounds like a very respectable debut, but stop dissing the, eh... mature runners. 70 doesn't sound that old. To me anyway. Anymore.

    Week beginning 10/10

    Monday: 5.3 miles inc tempo

First tempo of the plan. Target pace updated to be slightly quicker than the last block, 8:20 instead of 8:25. This time around they're split into sections with short recoveries between. I find tempo runs tough but very satisfying when you get into that groove. This was 15 mins with a 3 min recovery before a further 10 mins tempo.

    10 minutes w/u @ 10:13
    15 mins @ 8:18
    10 mins @ 8:12

    11ish minutes c/d @ 10:58

Hard to see the watch in the dark evenings so mostly doing this by feel with periodic checking in to the pace under bright lamp posts.

    Tuesday: 45 mins easy - 4.41 miles @ 10:13

    Runmute into work

    Wednesday: Football

    Thursday: Pilates

    Friday: 5 miles inc fartlek

I call them fartleks, it's structured sets of alternating hard pace with easy pace. Hard pace is 7:37 which was the pace of my second mile in my recent 2 mile PB. So even though I know it will be hard I also know there's no reason I can't hit that pace. On paper then this looks like one of the "easier" sessions on the plan, although the generous recoveries help. I say easier, I was certainly gasping for air by the end!

The session then was 3*(4 mins hard, 3 mins easy) and 5 mins between sets. It seemed like a lot of recovery but unless I missed something (even after clarification) I took advantage to make sure I was fully recovered for the next one. Happy with the consistency.

    10 minutes w/u @ 10:14
    Set 1 @ 7:35
    Set 2 @ 7:29
    Set 3 @ 7:34

    10 mins c/d @ 10:45

    Saturday: Rest

    Sunday: 75 mins easy - 7.35 miles @ 10:12

Collected annapr and headed to the Phoenix Park. Lovely run around the trails, park was looking gorgeous with the autumn colours and leaves. Took in the same quad killer hill as last time and pottered by the deer as well. Felt tired by the end but very enjoyable outing.

22.06 miles for the week and the usual cycling too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,388 ✭✭✭laura_ac3

    Ah my neglected log.

Things had been going great training wise until the last week of October and then I had a PF flare up. It was more than the ongoing manageable presence, it was back to how it was last summer where it would be sore walking around town for example. Unlike last summer I didn't ignore it, straight for a session on loosening out the calf etc and getting it looked at. Good news I was getting it sorted in good time and it was early days, and would need to stay on top of exercises etc. Bad news the advice was to take a week off and let it settle down and then spend another week easing back in. Well timed in that football was off for a couple of weeks too.

Followed the advice and eased back in with run a bit, walk a bit up to 3 miles and repeated that a few times. Didn't do any speedwork until 18/11 when I did 6x400m before work. Found them tough but it was also about 6:45am and baltic so I'd say I was barely awake or warm!! Had kept active with the usual cycle commuting, kept up the gym visits and pilates, went to football when it started back and went swimming a couple of times. Felt a bit disappointed that I was doing this again similar to this time last year so wasn't bothered recording it in the log to be honest.

    Jingle Bells 5k - 03/12/16

I had been planning for ages to do Jingle Bells and the last couple of weeks of November seemed promising enough to still give it a go. I did a tempo run the weekend before and while it was tougher than they had been it was still doable. Despite the interrupted training, with the JB course I felt reasonably confident to give the PB (24:49) a rattle.

Met up with some friendly faces beforehand and set off on a warm up to the starting area and to find a toilet. Started lining up in the start area with Bungy Girl, picked my spot where it looked right and let her continue on ahead. Minimum target was a PB, B goal was anything around 24:30 and due to some friendly banter the A goal was 24:17.

Gun went and we were off. With my research on the course I had decided to aim for an 8 minute first mile and then picking it up for the last two with the profile should be enough for a PB. I had gotten a slagging before the race for having splits written on my hand. I keep the watch in miles even for the 5k but these were the km ones for the A goal. I figured that with the course I didn't have to worry about the first few, that even if I hit the 4th one on target I'd be good. The slagging I was getting was just to run like hell and hang on but that really doesn't work as a mindset for me!!!! I find if I do that this hell is a pace I can't hold for more than a mile and then it just ends up a horror-fest slowing down. I went for the prepared approach!

Set off reminding myself not to hare off and was settling into my groove when two friends pulled up alongside. I'd been so in my zone I missed them waving while running alongside me. Felt very rude as I was just not in the mood to chat as I didn't want to waste energy or ruin my race by trying to set off too fast with them so I let them pull away.

Doubts started creeping in on the first mile....feels tough already....that's ok, it's supposed to.....this is the hard part......but seeing it hit exactly 8:00 on the watch gave me confidence. I was really having to work to bring the pace down on the second mile and not let myself take it easier with the 8 m/m pace. My friends were still just ahead so knowing they tend to be slightly faster gave me good incentive to stick and keep the distance as it was. Hit the second km mark and as expected I was about behind target but gradually into the second mile the average pace for the run was creeping down. Second mile was 7:53 on the watch so it was improving but I knew there was plenty more work to be done but I passed the third km marker with the gap to the target split reduced. Heading to the turns to the proper downhill I was beginning to feel the benefit, the pace seemed to be increasing for the same effort. I saw Annie up ahead so focused on getting alongside her, offering a grunted encouragement. We stuck together for a couple of hundred metres before she told me to push on. I pulled up alongside my friends around here and went by trying to kick on a bit so I could continue to run my own race. I really let the pace pick up for the downhill and concentrated on the fact this was karma payback for slogging up the Upper Glen in all those previous outings!! The 4th km was on target and looking at the watch I saw the average pace had finally dropped to where it needed to be. I knew I just had to keep this up and I was in with chance for the A goal. Took the bend for the finish, felt like a real leg sapper as the profile changed, it was like a speed bump for the energy as all of a sudden I had to work much harder to keep any sort of pace. Saw the clock tick past 24 and tried to put everything into booting for the finish, I couldn't tell you whether I actually caught anyone here, it was all a blur. 7:34 for the third mile and 37s for the extra bit.

I was shocked to see low 24:xx on the watch after I stopped. I hadn't glanced at it as I went for the finish so a part of me was gutted I had come so close - sure we're never happy!!! 24:05 for the chip time in the end so I was absolutely delighted with that. Felt the race went exactly as planned and I got the approach for me right. After having good results from following the pacers in Docklands 5k and BG pacing me through 2 miles in August I felt I needed a good outing from just my own pacing and mental battles. Caught up with lots of friendly faces after including BG, Annie, Nop, Denis, spacylou, annapr and plenty others with lots of race happy people and PB's to report.

No reaction from the foot so starting back into more structured training again and keeping up to date with the log.

And great running, all that consistent training this year has really paid off. Hmm, consistency... must try that sometime

    *think it was officially 24:16....

Wow Laura I admire your patience coming back from injury this past year and building into very strong training it just shows if you keep at it the times will eventually come. What a great finish to the year super report and pb well done.
