There are some very idiotic comments in this thread about the reality of being mugged.

If you get cornered by someone you do what your told, end of story....

Money, phones, wallets, cards, watches can all be replaced.

Getting stabbed in the face will maim you for life or possibly claim an eye....

Getting injected with air or tainted blood will probably kill you.

People who say "i would fight my way out of it" really need to get their priorities in order.

Heros get the girl in the movies but people who try to be heros on the street end up wearing a colostomy bag for the rest of their life.

and on a side note, muggers rarely work alone, so if you think you can take care of one lad remember theres probably another 2 or 3 waiting in the wings with hurls and knives.

As with guido nasi, the italian kid whos in a wheelchair,
a small kid took his wallet, he tried to get it back, from a kid!
and someone took him out with a beer bottle.

He gets to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

    How about that.

Best reason in the world to be fat....... No sderiously though reading through the conversations. I wonder how I haven't been beaten more often. I live in England during the college months, I live in Carlisle which is apparently in the top ten worst towns for drugs.

I have been going out for years.... never be offered drugs, never been mugged or attempted to be mugged, never been hit anywhere...... etc etc. TO be honest I have never had any trouble at all, police, scumbags, pissheads or anything...... maybe its just that I'm such a nice guy ;)

Christsake, fight your way out of it?

Fistys last post is pretty damn accurate, you have no way of assessing the full situation in the heat of the moment, unless you're extremely well trained, which most people aren't.

What the **** is a phone or a few quid, even a few hundred quid compared to your life?

It,s pritty pointless for a 15 year old to "fight him way out" from a well built 19 year old the guy would have 7 shades of **** beat out of him

Im 18 19 in 1 week 5,10 14 stone 1 foot 11" wide .......and by the sounds of it this guy is a good bit bigger ..... No 15 year old could take on some guy that size its plainly stupid to try

I was once chased when i was 16 from the teampark that comes to cork every year all the way to game in partrick street by 10 guys at lest 18-20 year,s old .....if i had tryed to be a smart ass to the first guy that "wanted a smoke" **** knows what would have happened

give up the damn phone its not worth it ............ 1 on 1 fight with a guy is one thing 1 vr 4+ scumbags with no respect for life is a compleat other

if you decide to carry a knife... and you have to pull it... you DONT pull it and wave it around, you pull it and use it instantly, before he knows whats hit him.

and yes, dont try to kill him, a permanent facial scar would be sufficient at most methinks

I'm sure all the boys from your days in 'nam would be proud of your lightning fast reactions.

Lets be serious here, if you're good/mad enough to use a knife properly under pressure, you probably already carry one.

On a side note, I don't think combat knife would leave a "scar" on his face so much as leave a gaping hole in his head, a glancing blow with a knife will only serve to enrage your aggressor more.

If you're going to go for a knife defence (which i massively disapprove of btw), you're looking at stabbing them, not namby pamby cutting, and you could kill them.

Get real and stop the repeated injections of testosterone lads, some of you might be well capable of defending yourselves, and I applaud you for it, but don't tell a 15 year old to carry a knife.

if someone did decide to carry a knife and to use it on an attacker i wouldnt be surprised if the attacker would press charges.

i really cant believe people are talking about carrying knifes. madness

Agreeing with the general stance on knives. In general, you shouldn't carry one unless you're fully prepared to kill somebody with it. Which I'd say 99% of people who do aren't prepared to do. Either the knife won't come out at all, or there'll be no time for it.

I've found, from a lot of walking around Dublin, and not just the city centre, that a lot of scum are either doing it in gangs, because they want to be hard bastards, or just opportunistically. Or for drugs. I'm very rarely approached (probably because I'm a massive bastard, 5'11, 18 stone). Once or twice asked for smokes/money. I'd say 90% of the time, if you say "Nope, I don't smoke/have money for you", they'll **** off.

The one time someone realistically asked me was waiting for a bus on Eden Quay. I asked him nicely to **** off, and he went. Most people mightn't be able to pull that off, though. If I were a small guy, or a girl going around town at night, I'd be ****ing bricking it, to be honest.

TBH anyone who lives near any town/city in Ireland is at some point bound to come in contact with this sort of scumbaggery. There is nothing that Tellox could have done. He could hardly have run and left his GF there, cause God knows what could have heppened. No point in carrying a weapon either, it only breeds trouble. He took his beating TBH and the only lesson to be learned here is to STAY THE FVCK AWAY from SUPERMACS. I mean its shít food anyway. The best way to avoid this shít is to never go to an area that you know COULD be troublesome alone. Go with at least two of your bloke mates, then you know that the scumbags wont chance getting their asses handed to them by 3 lads who will back each other up.

    Live and learn man

I remember reading before, some advice for what to do in a confrontation situation from some Canadian Martial Arts teacher talking about his training methods:

It went something like: "Our training won't make you win a fight, but it'll get you fit enough to run away"

You carry weapons around with you, you're looking for trouble. Just keep your wits about you, and if you get into a fix, if you can, run like hell.

they do , any chance that you do them more damage even in self defense and they will try press charges. I had it happen when I was younger , two utter scumbag fellas tried attcking me and I was like 10mins from home one night.
Needless to say I saw red and the upshoot was they tried to do me for
assult as had broken one of thier noses.

But that was about 8 years ago and man I really would not fancy my chances against so of the teen thugs that I have seen about recently.

In the last 4 weeks , Tellox , Amz and 3 other friends of mine have had the same thing happen under 18 thugs with nothing else to do but get a buzz out of attcking someone. It is sick tbh and well I blame fight club .
    :D

Aye, some scumbag tried to take my phone in SuperMacs, he said he "just wanted to look at it". I said no and I walked off trying to mind my own business, but then he gave me a big thump to my head, wasn't expecting that. :(

frankly i don't see why someone should have to cross the street if there's three or four lads on your side of the street. i mean i never do, i've only ever been unsuccessfully attacked three times and all of em i won (god bless jeet kune do :D). as far as i can remember two were about my phone the other was just a bunch of fags calling me sh*t from across the street and i was just so sick of it (i'd had a bad day aswell so good way to relieve some anger) so i just called em over and well....you know the rest.

generally though its probably a good idea if you stay in groups and as said before NEVER unsheath a weapon unless your totally comitted to use it - one guy i encountered took out a knife (i was in newpark kilkenny  don't ask why) and i just said "you gonna use that?" and he just walked off.

sory to ramble or seem boastful but - another encounter was a few days after i got back from england and i had just bought one of these anyway i was on me way back from a friends house in kilkenny walkin down towards the parade. i walked through the town hall thingy and there was 2 guys there (looked about 19 or so) and said summat to me bout my phone, i kept walking anyway and one of them grabbed my shoulder and spun me around. well i got a bit angry (i was nearly late for my bus!) and unsheathed the baton and with one smack (well closer to 2) broke the guys jaw (i think - there was a loud crack and he screamed anyway), the other guy just grabbed the first and ran. well i was happy :D
seriously though kilkenny is turned into such a scumhole....

right no knife, i dont even have one anyway. the expandabel batton, thats a good idea. i dont know what to do, ive never really fought so i dont know what id be like when pushed. im not very big, im about 5.5 nearly 11stone and only 15, if a ninteen year old came at me i would be ****ed. advice?? i think i should learn something like judo. what is the best thing to learn?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Are those extendable batons legal here? Lots of non-lethal weapons - such as pepper spray and stun guns - seem to be outlawed around here.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,808 ✭✭✭Dooom

as i said dont get a weapon unless your prepared to use it....

anyway im nearly 16 and am bout 5'11 ish and bout 10.9stone. advice for being aproached (unlike me who relishes a fight :D - sorry....don't mean to be boastful) judo is mainly all about grabs and holds so maybe just learn a bit of kick boxing? thats probably the easiest...and if not...i dunno just run like fun i guess or find a group or decent people and hang with them till they go...

personally id say jkd is the best to learn...

hmm im not sure if those batons are legal....but considering that attacking someon is generally considered asault...and thats illegal..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,588 ✭✭✭weemcd

pepper spray good one but does it work like would someone about to mug you jus be in so much pain he stops. i gona get ma pepper spreay and a tazer!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,588 ✭✭✭weemcd

are brass knuckles legal? has anyone here used them or been hit by them? whats the verdict

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,808 ✭✭✭Dooom

i have a pair of them - and i don't think their legal...they're not the bast choice for fighting as you still have to engage the person, whereas with spray you just point spray and move....
i havent used mine aside from sparring with a punch bag so im not sure what type of extra pain they'd incure (aside from the obvious)...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 760 ✭✭✭BoobeR

KnuckleDusters aren't legal afaik. I wonder would the gardai say anything to ya if ya had pepper spray :D *hum* ;)

Back at the end of March I was in London overnight on my way home from the USA and decided to go for a wander around the city instead of crashing in Heathrow Airport.

In the history of bad ideas that I've made personally, there have been few worse.

All was well until I was just after heading through Leicester Square. I don't know the city or that area of it all so I don't know exactly where I was at the time that well but at some corner I was grabbed and dragged around into a dark alleyway. There I was held up at knifepoint by three large gorrila like creatures with strong London accents.

I was just lucky that I'd left everything important back in the airport... you know, passport, wallet, credit cards, plane tickets,...

Anyway, as gorilla like thugs tend to do, they demanded all my money. Unfortunately I had around £350 sterling in cash in my coat pocket, as they quickly found out to their clear joy when they knocked me to the ground and went through my pockets.

I didn't try to take them on. In fairness, they were three large and fairly well built guys and I was... well I was just me. Before they got the money off me, I was going to try to make a break for it and get away from them - that was until one of them produced a knife... and no, not just a knife, - an 11" Bowie Knife - which I saw brandished close-up enough to my face to know it's owner had done a particularly good job with his pumice... (or whatever).

I didn't willingly hand over the cash... I just didn't get a chance to object before I was on the ground with my hand over a bloody mouth.

So what did I lose that night? £350 sterling (about €500), a bit of blood and a bit of pride. It left me a bit shaky too - a bit uneasy and nervous for a while - which is only natural.

What would I have lost if I fought back? Well with that weapon it could all too easily have been my life.

There's no moral to the story - unless it's that "it could have been far worse"... but don't let the fact that these things happen stop you from going out and having a good time.

london is farely rough... although a 11" knife would be a bit of a deterrent if you don't know how to disarm someone (sorry...im boasting again....ok i'll stop now) but if you consider that an 11" knife has about a 5"handle size or so...or was it blade length? well either way...i never really had a fondness for london tbh..
