How much wine to you drink?

A friend of mine has just been to the doctor and, as part of a general check up, he asked her how much she drank a week. She said probably a couple of bottles of wine and he told her she really needs to cut back.

She's a bit shocked and upset as she never thought of herself as a heavy drinker. I would never have considered her as someone needing to 'cut back' either.

I probably drink at least a bottle and a half a week and thought that was on the low side, compared to a lot of my friends. So just wondering what any wine drinkers out there would consider to be a normal amount to drink in a week?

He knows full well that everyone low balls the actual amount they drink so told her to cut back based on that.

Life would be way too boring if you followed every health guideline that is issued.

    A lot, when it's Wine O'Clock.

Which is between Cat O'Clock and HRT O'Clock.

Im 52 and have a couple of glass nearly every evening.
Have no intentions of cutting back, had bloods and tests done a few months back,
    came back fine.
By most peoples standards I drink too much.
I have friends who boast that they only drink at weekends.
Fine but they consume more than I do within the 3 days.
They also take meds, to sleep, be happy, be calm etc.
So Im sure I would be wise to cut back, but Im not in a hurry.:)

I suspect some people in this country are drinking way too much wine in this country and thinking nothing of it. It's a drink with a fairly high percentage alcohol content

    Wine? A glass a week.

Actually it's not a glass - I make tomato soup at least once a week and pour in a glug or two of cheap red wine, and I always have a swig myself afterwards. That's how much wine I drink.

:P you can buy 5% wine. Thats lower than some beers being sold.:)

Irish guidelines allow 11 standard drinks for women and 17 standard drinks for men per week.

A standard drink is equivalent to 100ml of wine, so a bottle contains 7.5 standard drinks. If you're female, approx 1.5 bottles per week puts you at the limit.

Make of that what you will.

Having said that, I do suspect there is a problem with high consumption levels of wine at home. It's far too easy to knock through a bottle between 2 people in an evening.

It's also fairly cheap compared to other alcoholic drinks, but sure we should push up the price of cheap beer...

Either way, I think we can all agree that 'Rose' is sh*te.

We really have a love affair with alcohol in this country which is causing extremely complex problems for our society

I rather like wine, but I only drink it at the annual Christmas party where I make up for all the wine I haven't had during the year.

Pronouncement needs more 'don't need alcohol to enjoy ourselves'.

I don't drink wine. I did have a nice red wine years ago though called Santa something or other. Never drank it since. I do see loads of people buying it every evening at the shop so it's obviously very popular.

Sounds fun but cant touch the stuff.

Im alergic to 50% of everything in the known universe.

Havent verified, but can confidently guess that it would leave me a snotty puffed up scratching mess.

Also its pleasurable which is a guideline, i only got the 'allergic to nice things' condition.

Have you ever tried sniffing pure alcohol. Or maybe injecting it.

I'll have a Martini most evenings, sometimes 2.
I'm sure I'm way over the weekly guidelines and sometimes I do get a bit worried and think I should cut back.
I could easily get through a bottle and a half of Gin a week.

Not much wine in a normal week, but plenty of pints and few spirits thrown in. I would exceed the so called safe unit limits most weeks and considerably exceed it some weeks.

True that, I much prefer the lighter body and the citrus aromas of an unoaked wine.

I'm not Irish, so I'm not sure how I would compare.
I rarely drink wine. I like red wine, but in recent years I've found that for some red wines, any quantity (less than half a glass) consumed will give me a massive migraine the next day, so I'm now avoiding them altogether.
I use white wine in cooking occasionally, but a bottle could easily be in the fridge for 2 weeks of more before it gets used up.

Some friends here tell me they have no problem getting through a bottle in a single evening, and I find that astounding to say the least.

I know people who drink a bottle of wine most evenings. They worry about it but find it hard to stop. They must be consuming 60-70 units a week, which can't be good.

How much wine do you drink, indeed.

None of your business. I'm here about the rash!

I drink 2-3 bottles of red wine a week. In my opinion that is not excessive.

I find alcohol consumption in this country is treated like speeding on the roads : People who drive slower than me are holding everybody up, and people who drive faster are reckless speeders.
People who drink less than me a dry shoites, and people who drink more obviously have a problem ;)

I've heard numerous liver specialists in the media mention how many middle aged women are presenting with early to late symptoms of cirrhosis of the liver. This is an increasing problem and is directly related to our high consumption of alcohol. Availability of alcohol and social acceptance of heavy drinking in our society are a large factor here. That's why GPs routinely ask patients how much they're drinking. They're on the front line and are seeing the damage first hand.

Not a lot but figured out I drink about 24 pints (not wine) a week.

Gonna try to cut down a bit. No health issues but could drop a few pounds.
