Rock has come on in spades this year

If Flynn doesn't retire into a home for the permanently exhausted what are the chances he'll start at midfield next year?

Great to see the pus on sour power scorpy balls at the end. Maybe focus on playing football next year.

Perhaps, with three minors in a row, Kerry will come again. However, after inflicting crushing defeats on Kerry, Donegal and Mayo (the three best teams of the last decade) this year, Dublin may have some space to have a year off but still prevail as Tipp and Tyrone may not be fully ready.

After that, Lowndes, Kilkenny, Byrne, Small, Costello, O'Callaghan may keep things going, it is only after that questions arise, but that may be well down the road.

Dublin bet Mayo last night, but hardly a "crushing defeat"

Congrats to all the genuine Dublin fans....must be a great feeling waking up today. Had some great craic with your fans yesterday which just goes to show that all the crap and abuse that goes on online (from both counties) is only from the minority. We'll see ye next year.

I don't know. I remember Dublin losing to Kerry by a couple of points 10 years ago. All the talk afterward was if only this and if only that Dublin could have won. I disagreed. Two points could have been 10 points. Kerry had the mental resolve and were always going to win in a tight game. Shoe is on the other foot now for Dublin. They've never lost when the game was there for them in the last 5 minutes.

Its not a crushing scoreline no but there is something in the fact Dublin keeping beating the same teams by 1 or 2 points every time. Crushing fatalism!

I think it's important mayo beat Dublin in the league next spring for the reasons you have outlined above
Yes we are going close but they are beating us or drawing

I don't want to see Flynn in a Dublin jersey until the end of the league at the earliest. He needs a rest.

    Agreed.

Some tough choices for Rochford. Lads are soldiering heroically but not getting the job done. Gilroy had a not too dissimilar dilemma in 2010 for us. Its arguable beating Tyrone that year was the making of this team though. Maybe your U21s can do the same. A mini cull won't be popular but it might be necessary imo.

That was great tackle. He off the ball movement and work rate goes unnoticed too.

Didn't think I'd be saying it at the start of the year but Dean was our best forward this year

    He has improved immensely.

Was touch and go during league who'd tie down regular spot between him and Costello.

His work rate and aggression, free kicking and general play are on par with his Da. And that is a true compliment!

Also, the abuse he was getting after kicks yesterday was despicable. If same was happening to COC you'd never hear end of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,593 ✭✭✭DoctaDee

Yeah he's certainly upped it in the physical stakes this year. There's a pic of Rock on the sindo website and he's a fair sized young fella now. I suppose the big clamour next year will be for Costello to start, he's an out and out forward and has really got to stake his claim before O'Callaghan or maybe McHugh picks his pocket.

The thinking behind Mannion starting and then operating 60 yards from goal was lost on me I haveta say. I just felt all the rejigging this year in the latter stages left the front 6 slightly blunt.

And yeah there's no one left to take the moral ground on free taking anymore they all get dogs abuse

He was getting huge abuse while taking them, from mainly from DOC again and to a lesser extent Higgins. This was the mayo plan the first day and yesterday too.

However initially every time he scored he headed straight to Higgins to push him. It seemed to really get under Higgins skin initially anyway particularly the scores from play. Higgins retaliated every time very aggressively in some cases, the two from play in particular

This was definitely the Dublin plan a kind of counter action, it was effective and Rock fed off it and it help nullify the distraction like a reward.

So many little things were twigged by both management teams yesterday,
Particularly Kilkenny, some said Mayo had him under wraps but he played a different role yesterday and had a dominant final 10 minutes with two great interceptions and a good show for Cluxton. He didn't slow the game down as much, Mannion was at it a bit though.

I'm expecting that game to have shown the lads that you hold the ball for some teams, and run at others. That bloody Donegal game killed the flow imo. Costello did what we thought Mannion would do.

Couldn't agree more Stoner, exactly how I saw it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,665 ✭✭✭Bonniedog

In fairness to Mayo they had Dublin pretty well twigged defensively both days.

Other teams have been letting Dublin use basketball tactic of taking the ball to the rim and backing off. Was giving Dublin opportunities to set up plays. Mayo tore into them, never gave them that space.

    That's the future!

Only their mental and physical toughness saw them through. I imagine there will be new plans hatched come February :-)

True, we gave them a good window with Donegal and Kerry.
It took a lot out of them to do it, left toothless up front most of the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,593 ✭✭✭DoctaDee

I'd go as far and say Mayo knocked them from pillar to post in the majority of the exchanges and sussed the intercept ball with our loopy hand passing - I'd say we were turned over more often yesterday than any game I can remember - would like to see a refocus on some of the attacking elements of our game

I think you could see Gavin's team talk in Rocks actions. Let them know you're up for it type of thing. Normally nonsense stuff but against the back drop of two weeks ago I was delighted seeing him attack Higgins.

WTF was up with playing the Auld Triangle right after the whistle btw? Were they trying to suck the atmosphere out of the place? Almost as bad as that other funeral dirge the Fields of Athenry.

Yeah, great song, but hardly celebratory. They usually play The Boys Are Back in Town don't they.
    Didn't subdue me anyway.

They played the "Auld Triangle", "The Boys are Back in Town" and then "Dirty Old Town".

No problem with the choice of musak, but they shouldn't have pressed the Play button, as soon as the final whistle blew. They normally wait until after the trophy presentation, don't they?

I never thought I'd say it, but you'd miss the aul Black Eyed Peas, all the same, wouldn't you? :o

I was kinda hoping Damien Dempsey would walk out again in the middle of them all (with a tear in his eye) and break into song with

    "Dublin Town"

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Last time they played black eyed peas was when they shut up the bishop of cashel by playing I got a feeling when Kk won the the minor all Ireland in 2010, the first real sign that Ireland had become a secular state, unfortunately Cillian Buckley didnt get a word in edge wise tho

Well, you're fierce lucky if you haven't had to listen to it since 2010. We've had it inflicted on us every year since 2011. Thankfully, it seems someone in Croke Park has finally seen sense.

Could be worse though.....at least there was no Rose of Bloody Mooncoin blaring from the speakers again this year. The country could do with a loooooong break before they hear THAT ever again.

Edit: Damm those pesky KK camogie players. I give up !

Maybe thats because rather than just it being a feeling, with Kilkenny, they knew it was going to be a good night

If it wasn't for your lot we wouldn't have had the morally offended looking to change us to Glasnevin (north). I read an article where Bono feared for his well-being on the 2 minute walk to the 19 bus stop - lucky he wasn't getting on the 17a..
