I've noticed a tendency among some people to classify any sort of dissent as an echo chamber for some reason. We seem to moving away form debate and more towards echo chambers and safe spaces in general so it makes sense that this way of thinking would pervade Boards.

Something which is prevalent today which wasn't say ten years ago is the concentrated effort made not to offend and to be accepting of all and everything. It should be ok to put your head above the parapet and say what it is you want to say.

Never mind the travellers/immigration/muslims/norn ireland debates.

Real venom was evident in the row between those who like a carvery dinner and those who think it's an abomination Unto The Lord.

That's the kind of row that makes AH great.

I blame iPhones, and android devices, and all the other devices that made the internet accessible to the masses. Being able to operate a PC was a pretty good way of filtering out stupid people and people that are afraid of technology. Now anyone with a hundred euros and the ability to put brightly shaped objects in the correct hole can connect with fellow idiots and be stupid on a grand scale. An infant can be on facebook and posting within minutes of their first use of a phone these days.

Generally before the plebs came online there was a sort of culture and jokes were understood to be jokes. Then everyone else turned up and sarcasm just became a thing of the past on the internet, it was replaced by people that genuinely meant whatever bat**** nonsense they heard down the pub or off the priest.

If I had the boobs or indeed the balls to strip off and raise thousands for charity I would.

I'm sure you would too :)

I would do something entirely different :)

But of course the method doesn't matter I know.

One thing that has happened with AH is the fact that a lot of legendary posters have closed their accounts. You can't say certain things without a warning either. Make AH great again.

What is "The Clique"? Aren't those things one of the reasons AH wants to stay away from chatty threads, so cliques don't form?

There are some little nuggets of comedy gold in AH. This one had me tipping my hat recently.

That's off topic and Boards are terrified that a thread will evolve like a normal conversation.

The only thing that should be banned in AH is anything that might lead to litigation for the owners. Libel, slander, sub judice cases.

Everything else should be allowed. Think about it, if we are not naming an individual anything is possible with the above caveat. And it should be.

We need a trump style poster.

We'll build a thread and make the mods pay for it.

I think these two posts are bang on. Lots of AH threads shouldn't really be in AH, they're just there because the forum they should be in are so stringently moderated as to prevent opposing opinions being discussed.

I think the forum would benefit from being split into two, personally. One to follow the original spirit of After Hours, with silly joking banter, and one for more serious discussion where you can say just about anything apart from serious stuff like trying to dox people, start a hate rally, or break the "don't get the forum sued" rule.

So the real problem is also the charters & the way that other forums are moderated. I know of one classic example in a very contentious forum. The Mod allows a practice that is against the charter but it works well & we all appreciate it.

I've never really understood the "no chat" rule. It seems sort of messed up that chatting about "things that trivially annoy you" is verboten, yet it's perfectly fine to have shit-loads of near-identical threads about immigration, multiculturalism, Islam, etc - all of which (more or less) consist of people calling each other cunts without using that exact word.

Make me supreme mod of AH and I'll make it great again or **** them all to death. :D

I've never said otherwise. We have to ensure that everyone can enjoy this forum though. There's a balance.
