Isn't there a town in Belgium that bans all mention of Christmas until two weeks beforehand ?

Well good on'em if its true. Its getting rediculous here these days with all the Christmas talk & preparation in September (before Halloween)

As a young teenager I stacked shelves in a supermarket during the Christmas rush. They played the same Christmas songs on a tape in a loop.
It was a relief to stand at the bus stop in the rain after work.

UAE for Christmas. Direct flights to Dubai. Muslim country, no Jesus in a manger. Bars open Christmas Day, great weather too. And a few camels in case the wise kings get lost.

Bars may be open Christmas day but a pint is a fortune and they resent you for drinking it. Silly place, id have no interest in it myself.

I think it's until Advent begins, which is about 4 weeks beforehand.

I hate all this complaing and moaning about Christmas. If people want to spend €1000's on Christmas. It's their choice and their money.
You don't have to buy Christmas items just because their in the shops. It's the same when summer holidays are advertised at the end of December. You don't have to book one or go to chemists/supermarket and stock up in sun cream/after sun but you rarely hear people moan about this!

Christmas, where all my losses come home to roost.

The forced jollity, the crowded shops, the materialism, comfort eating in to oblivion, needing to use my emergency valium, watching my dad struggle, hearing about people's plans and excitement. I hate it.

This year will be spent like the last few, in my jammies with a tin of Roses for company and some horror films.

Yea only difference is the holidays aren't shoved in for face!!! Ads everywhere, merchandise at the front of the shop entrances, it just really goes OTT.

At least you can avoid the holiday posters if you want!!

I love christmas but I saw christmas decorations in dealz today and it's way too early
Is there any chance it's benefitting people who prefer to spread out all the christmas spend?
It kinda takes the excitement away

I absolutely f*cking despise xmas more and more every year. I really wish I had the money to disappear to a Muslim country for the whole of November and December. If I win the 130 euromillions tonight that is exactly what I will do as well as starting a campaign to have all xmas advertising banned until the second week in December. I'd also ban xmas cards on the grounds they are a waste of paper and destroy the environment, not that I care about the environment. It's the cards that say "Seasons Greetings" that really get on my tits for some reason. I think if one were to eat 10 servings of xmas pudding with double cream in one sitting, that would give you some idea how I feel about xmas.

Well Christmas is magical for the vast majority of people. And it was for me once too.

When Dad died, and then my younger sister, always two empty places at the Christmas Dinner.

    Was never the same since.

We tried, we still try. And there is all the usual crap. But it will never, ever be the same.

For those who have not experienced the loss of someone close, believe me, Christmas is a terribly sad time. Awful in fact, you are absolutely holding it together for the sake of the kids or whatever.

I would urge people to understand that Christmas is on the surface a great time, but for many it is a purgatory that must be endured with a smile and all that for the sake of others.

I like Christmas, I see all my family, friends relations who I haven't seen all year, yes it's a sad time also as every year in my wider family there is someone not there, and there missed.but there is a younger generation coming along and it's great for them.

Ps I do certainly think it starts to early, middle of November should be enough time with the media and shops etc.

Love everything about Christmas, the music, food, family, decorations...etc but hate how commercialized it's become, back when I was a kid you wouldn't hear a peep about it until early December, nowadays I'm seeing selection boxes beside Halloween masks, kids these days, in my opinion, just wont know the anticipation or almost magic of waiting for the first Coca-Cola Christmas ad or the build up to the toy show (or maybe that was just my family)

I love Christmas, it's by far my favourite time of year. Already planning multiple Christmas parties and the 12 pubs. Planning to finish up work on the 16th of Dec and not back 3rd Jan and only need to use a few days holiday as we get most of xmas off in addation to our annual leave. Spend all the time up home, I just can't wait!! Food, beer, presents, family, sport on tv what a great time of year!!

Oh and don't forget Christmas fm, it's still saved on the radio in the car from last year the sooner it's back the better.

I enjoyed Christmas when it didn't start till December. Now I hate it. So I pretty much ignore it.

I am so glad I married into a Jewish family. Now we have a nice brunch (including bagels and lox of course), call the family back home then head out for a nice long walk.

This works well for me as I don't like turkey or chocolate, and dislike overeating in general.

Anyone who hates Christmas has no heart. It's the happiest time of the year, you know.

You are very lucky Candie. For so many of us Christmas is the saddest time of year. I wish I could find some happiness in it. I wish my house was filled with laughter and excitement and people coming together. Even the arguments. It's not like that anymore and I find that difficult.

I find it odd that people blame the misery in their lives on Christmas .......... if you're depressed, lonely, grieving etc. then you're depressed, lonely and grieving all year round .......... I've lost people close to me and I miss them, I don't miss them any less in July than I do in December .......... Christmas is great and that's that, I feel sorry for you if you don't feel the same but whatever.

Christmas is a loaded time of year because the emphasis is very much on family and celebrating. For some people it serves as a big reminder of what they have lost. Of course that's not the case for everyone. We have all suffered in different ways afterall but it lands harder on some people. That's just how it is.

You're opinion is as valid as mine.

I guess it depends on an individual's personality/point of view ............ Christmas, for me, is even more important in relation to loss and should be celebrated as if it's your last one ever ......... other people tend to wallow in their misery and even more so at Christmas but that's not Christmas' fault nor are Christmas-lovers to blame.

I do agree with you in that it depends on your perspective among lots of other things. I do try to use it to concentrate on all the wonderful things in my life. It's just hard sometimes.

I empathise with you Persepoly, as a someone who loves Christmas (and the whole long build up to it!) I wish everybody could feel the same as me ........ in any case, I do genuinely wish you a Happy Christmas, New Year and future life in general.
