Some of last years novices did that and I think it was a big success, there might still be a map floating around somewhere...

On the subject of diet . Anyone taking any suppliments ? Is it too late to start now ?

I've been taking multi vits and iron for the last month . Got some vitamin C today to help with the sore throat . Can't do any harm or can they ?

I take iron and glucosamine everyday. And I eat two kiwis which I was told gives you 100% vit c you need a day. Can't say about multi v it's. Some say it's just producing expensive urine! But can't hurt if your eating your greens as my nan would say!

I take a multi vitamin every morning and have done for some years now. Was using Berocca for few years and then I looked at the Tesco equivalent and ingredients were identical, for far less cost, except for less Iron.. and I ain't planning on getting pregnant so think I am OK!

I also take 3 x Sona "Joint Plan" with my brekkie - these contain Chondroitin and Glucosomine (did I spell correct). Think it has taken a few months, but knees definitely holding up a little better these days.

Other than that, nothing else major - using berries in porridge now instead of honey. Put in some chia seeds few times a week too and maybe some ground cinnamon. Recently have been taking a protein shake once or twice a week after a tough run. Lots of water every day..

Cheers H . I Do the water . Fruit in porridge and the odd protein shake myself . My diet is quite good i think mostly chicken fish and rice based with the odd steak thrown in for good measure . Just wondering if there's anything extra that I should be doing over the next month.

I normally avoid running around the mountains near me from late September to mid November because it's mating season and it can actually be quite dangerous.
I have mizuno wave inspires too
I started breaking in my 4th pair of wave inspire in little over a year yesterday. I normally replace them after 1000km. Although I only hit 500 km on my last pair as I'll probably hit another 500 km between now and DCM and don't want to be racing 42.2km on shoes near the end of there life. Personally I love them and find them great, each to their own and that.

Think for me, and as per posts yesterday, is to cut out the grazing food. I need to substitute a piece of fruit for a muller corner and a bag of pop corn for a magnum etc. Got to be diligent on drinking lots of water too.

I still like to get out and have a nice cappuccino/coffee every day but don't think that's too bad..

Overall just eat healthily and no take outs, and not too many treats. Can't be making life too boring.. :pac:

I'm planning to run the last 20 miles of the marathon course for my LSR this Saturday. Starting very early, as in probably before 7? from Castleknock Gate....we may be having visitors before we go to Croker.

Would nearly join you (Not that I would be assuming I would be welcome:P) but me getting to there for 7 would be tricky.. I live over Fosters Av direction so its easy for me to drop off there but getting to starting point is the problem..:(

Edit. gonna think this out a little now myself in meantime. Fairly easy for me to get to town on Luas early in morning so I may look to start and run the course from start point all the way round to Foster's Av and home.. though it could be a circa 22M run for me by time I get home from Foster's. Anyone interested??... (People with good planning and mapping abilities more than welcome). I would be running at circa 9:50-10M pace

Of course H, company's always good on the long runs! Just I have to be up and gone very early, with everything else that's on the list for Saturday.

Run from Foster's to Stephens Green, follow DCM route to the Liffey, but skip PP and run directly to Kilmainham. Join the DCM route there and run back to Fosters? I was planning around 15 miles (75%) and mapped that route from Ranelagh so from Foster's it must be close to 18/19? You will miss St Laurence's Hill that way, but save that for the day :)

I'll have a think, wouldn't mind getting the run out of the way early so I may join you for 14-15 miles if that's OK? I've run the route a couple of times and think I know it enough not to get lost now.

Hey A.. you thinking this Sat? I'm open to anything.. but I am tied to that need to be home and showered for 11. I am thinking early Luas into town and go from there. I will research a little more. I really enjoyed my out and back to Powerscourt 2 weeks back but can get another chance to do that in 10 days time. Hope the recovery coming along well?

Thanks.. I am getting more into this idea now of running the DCM route; the one thing that puts me off is the thought of arriving at a junction and no knowing where to go.. :D

Yeah I'd be up for this Saturday and early is good for me. I'll get on the laptop later and look at routes to suit so that I leave you after 15 miles. I did one before that took me to Windy Arbour Luas rather than doing the Orwell Park/Milltown/Clonskeagh bit so maybe that would work.

Recovery is going great thanks, 6 miles done today.

I take revive Active and Revive Joint - find them both brilliant and since I started a cold last week I am living on echinea and its working a treat

    Hi Guys,
I am sorry that I missed the DCHM last Saturday as I had a family emergency that morning, so sorry that I didn't get to meet you....real life got in the way......totally pee'd off as I had worked my socks off for the race....but dems de breaks:rolleyes:

Anyway, congrats to all the Novices that ran the DCHM, some great reports posted, you will be in great shape for the big day!

On the whole diet thing in the next few weeks, I would advise people not to do anything too rash and change too many things too quickly as this could lead to 'sugar crashes' and generally feeling a bit lethargic. By all means cut down on the junk food and maybe cut back on beer/vino for the last 4 weeks as it will stand to you on the day.

Just a small word of caution to people not to go overboard drinking far too much water in the weeks leading up (and on race day) to the DCM as this can be very dangerous and can flush much needed salts and sugars out of your system leaving you feeling drained and weak on the day. This happened to a few Novices in the past and it also happened to a friend of mine at last years DCHM with disastrous results (passed out etc, but was ok thankfully afterwards) .

Be sensible in the last few weeks and don't try anything that you have not trialled before and you will be fine.

Almost Taper Time.......the longest 2-3 weeks of your lives where you will be only interested in having a conversation with people with the word 'MARATHON' in it :D

I internet-researched glucosamine. Efficacy seems to be unproven. How do you find it 'brilliant', if you don't mind me asking?

Also: there's no cure for the common cold, surely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 126 ✭✭Safrongirl

I take both of the revive products - one is a sort of multivitamin and I found it did increase my energy levels quite a bit and especially with all the running - I also started taking the joint one on recommendation of my physio - he said it would be good for my knees and hips and is generally very good for your joints . Now it could be just luck but since I started on the joint on I have had no knee pain or issues so for me it works !

No unfortunately no cure for the cold but the echinea has reduced the symptoms for me

I currently drink 2 litres of water a day and maybe 1 litre of coconut water - do you think I should cut down ? By the way I have always drank in or around this amount

    Hi Safrongirl,
I wouldn't like to advise you to stop taking on the amount of water that you normally take if you drink this amount of water and are feeling ok after say, an LSR, as your body is probably used to this amount and cutting back suddenly could be a shock to your system.

I bow to other more knowledgeable folks on this thread that might be able to offer further advice here. I was just making the point that people should not start swigging down gallons and gallons of water in the next few weeks thinking that it will better hydrate them in prep for the DCM.

As mentioned on previous threads, thirst is a simple barometer for all runners as it is the bodies own way of telling us when need a drink, so that is what I tend to go with, that said I do try to hydrate with a pint of water and electrolyte (High 5 Tablet) the evening before a long distance race with maybe a small banana thrown in.
I run with a small race belt and either High 5 electrolyte or Lucozade to drink and a few sweets such as jelly babies or ShotBlocks and a small amount of Gels (too many upset my stomach), but hey everyone is different and what works for some doesn't for others...

Make sure Novices that if you want you try any last experiments with hydration and fueling, your last LSR's are the time to do it and don't significantly change things for the big day and you will be fine ;)
