Accommodation for the Irish Ambassador to Japan in Tokyo.
Scandalous: New report reveals the State is spending the costly sum of €46,000 a month on an apartment for Ireland’s ambassador to Japan.

According to a recent report published in the Mail on Sunday, it is understood the Irish Government is currently shelling out the hefty sum of €46,000 a month on a premises in Tokyo, for Ireland’s ambassador to Japan.

The report which states the Department of Foreign Affairs is actively seeking a more permanent solution, also found that the cost of the ambassador’s residence in the Japanese City cost more than double the price of any other property rented by the department last year.

Heartbreaking stuff when you see such a waste of taxpayers money, especially with the huge increase of homelessness and suicide rates in the country.

They should just buy a place in Tokyo, that'll be cheaper I'm sure.

"Cost more than double any other any other property" so there's more than a few people put up in 20,000+ pm accommodation? (Or just any building they rent?.. I've just re read it, so there is actually loads of them. )

Sounds mental. Very annoying to be pinching my own money, worrying about literally one or two euro here and there, and then the tax money just having some significant percent of it just thrown into the abyss in cases like this. If it was their own money they'd be more careful

    You think that's bad?

We're currently paying the rent for an entire block of offices (Carrisbrook House in Dublin 4) of which only a floor of which is in use, to house the Israeli Embassy.

Have done for years. €990,000 per year (€82,500 per month!) in rents, which had cost €4,700,000 by 2013 so you're looking at €7,670,000 in the last 8 or so years.

Has anyone intimated that this price is out of kilter for that market?
It would be scandalous if we were paying over the odds in terms of the Tokyo apartment rental market, but as usual the fine journalists at the Mail on Sunday haven't bothered to find out.

Do you honestly think many apartments in Tokyo are being rented at that price?

That is pretty nuts alright. What's the reason behind the lack of replacement tenants? Security fears?

I doubt it's a security issue at all to be honest. Just idiocy of the highest level.

But sure isn't it all the dole heads fault :D:D

If people only opened there eyes to the waste of tax payers money on stuff like this instead of slating some people who are unfortunate enough to be on the live register and living a horrible lifestyle, scraping to make ends meat, and in a lot of cases through know fault of there own

It is scandalously priced but Irish Ambassador's residences host functions numerous times a week. Their residences are not just for housing the ambassador and his/her family.

Could we not put a load of homeless people in the remainder of the building to give them ah ... security.:D

It's not like the ambassador can couch surf or airbnb it whilst he's there.

Good grief, one taxpayer is paying out 42k a month? Poor bugger. S/he should probably seek legal aid.

Fill the other seven floors with Syrian refugees.

I wouldn't imagine that there are many apartments of the right size,in the right location,in one of the most overcrowded cities in one of the most overcrowded countries in the world.

He could stay in the 5* hyatt hotel in Tokyo for a month for 20k so im pretty sure they should be able to rent somewhere for less money.

One cost 20,000 a month, the other costs closer to 2,000,000,000 a month...

but for sure, there should be a major evaluation of value for money with the public and civil service, particularly with regards to public sector procurement. We spend 13,000,000,000 a year on this, I can only imagine the fantastic value for money we are getting!

Here's a suggestion. No direct public sector pay increases, they can however have a potion of any savings secured from reduced procurement costs...

Yes, the Israeli Embassy only takes up one floor but they have put a few settlers on each of the other floors and claimed ownership of them!

You try and save for a deposit when your rent is 42k a month.

Hardly a fair comparison considering this is just one of hundreds of examples of the government squandering money.

The Irish trade balance with Japan :

goods exports of €2.1bn in 2012 and imports of €798m while services exports were at €2.7bn and imports of €0.9bn.

I did a search and you can get a 230sqm 4 bedroom apartment in Chiyoda-ku (same part of Tokyo as the embassy) for 1.1 million yen a month, which is about 9,500 euro a month.
