Surely "figuring things out for yourself" includes reading things written by other people which may or may not resonate with you? And talking to peers and asking questions of "role models" to get answers to the questions that a young adult may have?

Otherwise what do you think "figuring it out" entails? Sitting in isolation and making it up as you go along?

It was "harden' the **** up" and it was a joke.

If you're talking about the article linked earlier he didn't say that he didn't have mental illness. He said he had anxiety, but not depression. Maybe he changed his mind. Are people not allowed to do that? I'm not sure where the hostility towards him about that is coming from, I'm really not.

Or, the editor changed his mind.

I will say no more on him. He is the type of snowflake who would come on here , read what is sad, and whinge about it in his next article, "typical Irish....."

So you happened to arrive at who you are through living in a vacuum without any influence from father figures or role models? Good man yourself. You should write a book about that, it'll be a definite bestseller.

All doom and gloom with the Arc looking to be a rather disappointing renewal.

Must resist the typical bloke attitude, must embrace the new pathetic man ways , cry cry cry

You look at others and their mistakes and follies and figure out what not to do. Sure you talk to others, but you don't take everything as bible, nor do you hold someone up in any particular light

Why would I write a book? It defeats the purpose of figuring things out for yourself

He subsequently said he had had it as a youngster, afair he said he broke his own arm and he called his depression "Jeffery".

So it was unusual to simply deny it. He hardly forgot breaking his own arm. Again, there may a good explanation as to his denial...but he should be asked about it.

    I had it in 2013, I just wasn't admitting it/didn't realise it!

Eh, no idea about this particular guy, as I said, no idea who he is. But just from what's been said so far, could easily go either way.

They do, and it's mildly annoying. So I don't read them, some people might like them though, whatever floats their boat.

There's a wee bit of amusement factor in this being treated as the first time a media outlet has ever dared to suggest how to be a specific gender with a load of superficial cobblers though.

It looked like there might actually be an interesting debate in this, but then the OP bemoaned the "bitchification" of men and then got joined in by the other alphabaters.

Both funny and sad that the OP and the other cheerleaders don't see the whole point of articles discussing men's depression, men's health and domestic violence come about precisely because they possess this closed-minded view of what being "a man" is, and anyone who tries to change that is apparently "bitchifying" men.

On another day no doubt they'd be moaning that the feminazi media only ever talk about the struggles that women face and never acknowledge men's issues.

Taking lessons on how to be a man from Fintan o'****ing Toole is like taking lessons on how be good in the sack by the local parish priest.

What gets me with this line of thinking is the fact that on one hand they say men shouldn't subscribe to traditional male roles while at the same time telling us how to be a man.

I've known plenty of people who've denied that they have depression or a mental illness who have later gone on to admit that they were. It's hardly a barometer of his untrustworthiness, is it? It can be something that takes people a while to be comfortable with before they can be open and public about it.

What's the craic with the Gay agenda these days? It's normalised and accepted with equal rights but some of the voices from the community can be OTT in my opinion. We get it your gay ffs, no need to shout it from the rooftops. It's like people are trying to stoke up some kind of revolution.

You won't know about the gay agenda until it's too late!!!!

But seriously I think it is good to have a discussion on masculinity.
Mens role in society is changing.
Physically demanding jobs are becoming less important and Jam jars are now manufactured to be easy open.

how will men fit in to this new world order?

I suggest we secretly allow women to take all the jobs under a cloud of equality and then we take off on Bikes/yachts/motorcars and travel the world.

This is pretty much it. Its just more of the same subtle brain washing of our betters telling men how to feel, what to think, how to act, dress and what morals to have in relation to the latest cool and trendy 'current events'. I see the term rape culture is shoe horned in there as well for good measure.

May as well chop your balls off and hand them over if these people had their way.

Do, they mention mens rights in relation to their children, do they ****!

No offence intended, but why does an article on 'how to be a man' have a trans man in his 30's on the panel?

You want the world to crash , bruh?

How is taking off on bikes etc any different to being like the work shy social welfare man who sits all day on the couch or sits in the bookies punting 2 euro on a 11/8 favourite?

    Why not?

    It's just that persons opinion.
You could ask your granny what she thinks it takes to be a man. you wouldn't have to agree.

In my opinion and as the article states, that person has thought a lot about being a man as they were born a girl.
probably has more insight than most as they've examined it from every angle.

So a transgender has more incite than a man on how to be a man? Heard it all now.

You can ask your granny, but her opinion would be as useful as a chocolate tea pot

It's hardly Fintan saying to be a man, you have to do this, this and this. I have no issue with Mr. O'Toole being interviewed about this issue or feel the need to call him a bitch because of it. The problem I have with it is that it's a very one-sided look at masculinity. The question is asked 'What is the worst male trait' without asking what's the best. And in the round robin, the questions seemed to be about why men like to bate the heads off each other as if that's all we are capable of doing as men. I'd like to have a more rounded, fully realised conversation about men and masculinity today as I do think it is an important topic but from what I've seen so far I'm not going to get it from the Irish Times this week.

Where is the white 30s / 40s straight non-criminal, non-addict representative? Why does a trans man get in the panel when a white 30s / 40s non-criminal, non-addict is not represented?

We have 3 people over 50, the 3 in their 30s are not representative of ordinary 30s / 40s.

No what I mean is that they have thought about it more than most.
If someone has read every book and paper on space and the solar system I'd be still happy to listen to them on the subject even if they're not an astronaut.

Ps: I do believe that trans men are men btw.

I'd be interested to hear what people think makes a man?

Having a dick & balls isn't the answer. (a soldier who stepped on a landmine and had his genitals blown of is still a man)

There's no such thing as 'how to be a man'.

I imagine this would be an effort at portraying that.
