It's just getting ridiculous, or more ridiculous should I say.
The cost of the latest iPhone is nearing €1000 to buy off contract.

And I'm not picking on Apple, Samsung are not far behind, and LG.

I cannot believe the low amount of memory these devices come with as standard. The standard capacity hasn't moved in years. Memory is dirt cheep. And then you have to go out and buy a memory card after the hundreds and hundreds of euros you've already departed with.

Imagine the laptop one could buy for €700 to €1000. Oh but you can't take selfies with those bulky things.

The difference from one model to another these days are minimal. The next model might be millimetres thinner but because it's so expensive , you have to buy a case to protect it, which makes it much thicker than it was in the first place.

I have a 2 year old €99 smart-phone and the only thing that it lacks is a good camera. It runs all my apps perfectly fine.

I think smart-phones have become vanity devices. Expensive little vanity project if you ask me.

People falling for big brand names.

I can't afford ANY of the above.... I just "upgraded" to the mother in laws old s4. It's a grand phone. Would love a one plus though.

Pretty much this. I've got a Redmi Note 3 Pro. Costs around $200us

Comes with, 5.5' screen, fingerprint reader, dual sim or SD card memory expandable and battery that lasts a comfortable 2 days between charges (longest recorded screen on time 6hrs 30 mins) all coupled with performance that in real every day terms is on par with any other phone on the market. Oh and I get a headphone jack.....

Then people literally whinge at you saying they can't use android and it's sh*t and upon asked what they use the phone for it's: phone calls, sms, emails, facebook/twitter with the occasional duck faced selfie.

Fools and their money is really all you can say.

The iPhone capacity has doubled at the price point with the latest release. The iPhone 7 has actually been shown to be faster than many laptops at the €700-1000 price point, and smartphones use SSD memory, that drives the price of laptops up considerably.

A decent camera is pretty essential to many people, if your phones's one is ****e then budget €300 for a stand alone, defeats the purpose really.

Good phone, but miles behind pissing all over the flagships. Serious phone for the money though. And it's the phone I'd buy if I lost an uninsured contract phone. For now I find the iPhone a really solid device. I do respect what Oneplus are doing though. Great devices.

You don't have to pay 1k for a smartphone. The same way you don't have to spend 50k if you need to change your car. Nice to have a bit of choice in life though.

I don't care if it's doubled. It's still a pathetic amount of memory for the hundred upon hundreds you pay for it.

Also the speediness of the device is only a geeky perceptual fact that most people don't even notice.

Except it doesnt really. It uses the same SMD Flash memory as a USB key. A 128GB key can be got for €20 these days, you bet it costs only a fraction of that.

    EXACTLY !

What are you talking about? Its the higest benchmarked phone of 2016, beats the Samsung S7, LG G5, HTC 10 & iPhone 7 hands down performance wise.

Wrong. The iPhone a10 fusion soc is currently the fastest.

Let's be honest no smart phone has an optical zoom so the cameras are all crap. A 300 euro dslr would wipe the floor with a camera built into a phone any day

Right again. No high-end smart-phone can match even a middle of the road pocket digital camera these days.

If someone wants to buy a crazy expensive phone....? whatever to them. Their money and they can do what they want. But I do have a little niggling issue when said people try to justify spending that much. You know the usual spiel, "but it's high quality" .. "cheaper phones are rubbish!" yadda yadda :pac:

Meh all this talk about specs is a waste of time since most people won't tell the difference between the flagships and any edge will usually be overtaken within a few months. It really just comes down to how you intend to use the device.

Personally, I go for android as I'm a software engineer and sometimes like to play around with the inner workings of things. Apple is the natural enemy of that with their locked-down, constricted ecosystem.

Have just updated from a Note 4 to a Oneplus Three.

Give me iOS any day - having had a Nexus 5 and GS6 among others more recently.

I don't care what a benchmark says, my user experience with Android is it lags after a a few months. A common complaint. A fragmented OS built to work on many many different devices compared to an OS built for the hardware like Apple produce. No contest. My 5s (which I used up until recently) was still super smooth and performing perfectly. Great for a 3 year old phone.

So what if people can afford to drop 7/800 quid on a phone? Move on.

But you just making the same point I was making. Phones not worth THAT much money. The camera's in these phones are NOT that advanced to justify the cost.

I would suggest high-end smart-phones are roughly priced at about double of what they are worth.

So what. A previous poster brought up benchmarks and stated something factually incorrect. Same with the memory. IP7 DOESN'T use the same memory as a USB flash drive. It's nand is superior and uses an nvme controller.

In any case regardless of specs hardly anything pushes modern phones from a software / performance perspective so that's why people can see hardly any difference between mid range and high end models

I'm not sure if this iPhone craze is just a choice.

Apple to me are not a electronics company. They are a marketing company, that just so happens to be marketing electronic devices, that they are manufacturing in China !

I have a Huawei Ascend g7. It cost about €250 new 2 years ago. It has 16gb of internal memory. 5 megapixel camera on the inside and 13 megapixel camera on the outside. 5.5 inch screen and although it's running an outdated android version it still does what I need it to do. If I became rich tomorrow I'd buy something more up to date but for now I'm happy with what I have.

At the minute I'm using a 5 year old iphone 4s and the latest update (iOS 10) is the first software update it hasnt been compatible with, when you show me a 5 year old one plus that can run the lates software update (or even still works) come back to me.

That being said I wouldnt stump up for the prices they're asking for any of the flagships, for 99% of people an SE would be as good of a phone as you would need

Haven't went over 400 yet, first smart phone was nexus 4 followed by one plus x.

Nexus got dumped because of the **** screen gets a crack and you can't use the screen a little above it and below it. Yet the nephew had a cheap Sony phone screen cracked all over but could still use no problem. The X has stood up to the batterings that have been thrown at it

Just to make those folk who bought an Iphone jealous. I just finished using a Samsung S1 a few months ago, it did the job and I'll be sad to say goodbye. Now Im on some cheap free upgrade and a €20 pm month contract. It makes phone calls and I dont care about a camera.
Na na na naaa na bet yer jealous now Iphone suckers.
    Prolly not though.
