buying a car is never a smart financial decision. it is driven purely by desire, and without going all melancholy life really is too short. If you really want the car and are able to continue with the repayments, whats stopping you ?

Have you taken it for a test drive ?

cheers. not yet but there is one in Karmann which is a grand more expensive, slightly more mileage, but better alloys so I'm gonna take a test drive there tomorrow :)

It's missing the Pretorias for a start. Make a world of difference to the R and for the amount they cost as an "upgrade" it boggles the mind how they're not on more R's in the country.

The APR also doesn't look very attractive on it at all, you might find you'd actually be better off getting a newer one on a lower rate for a higher sticker price, as you'll pay a similar monthly but not as much interest.

    .

I'd agree obviously but you'd be surprised how many would prefer the Cadiz. The cadiz do look a bit more dramatic / in your face. Main thing that put me off them is the diamond cut finish.

That plus many R's are dealer-spec'd stock cars and they wouldn't see the value in spec'ing different wheels even if they are cheap.

€160 odd though, for wheels that are far more unique and not already floating about everywhere in replica guise on every MkV upwards.

To be honest I don't think the Cadiz look that good even in the flesh, the design itself is just a bit meh. Should have kept them double spoke it would have made a really nice difference to them.

    Even less - €130!
All the more incredible when you go to price a single replacement wheel from VW. You'd need to part with a kidney. Or two.

it went OK. it was straight onto the motorway so fairly straightforward. the performance was better than the gti PP but I don't know if it was substantially so.
interestingly enough, when I was doing 100kmph on the N2 the mpg was 32!
maybe because mine is fully loaded with extras it seemed a little bare inside? that could be all in my mind though.
they wanted 8k to change which was 3k more than the Cork one. Theirs does have the upgraded alloys, sound system and screen but it also has 30k on the clock whereas the Cork one has I think 9k km.

I have an offer to change to a 151 GTI PP white for about 5k but changing from a same spec GTD to a GTI doesn't seem like an upgrade whereas going to an R does.

In fairness motorway pull isn't where the R shines. In the real world waiting for a gap in traffic to exit a junction on a wet day there are few other cars you would want to be in. Just push the pedal and go. Same leaving roundabouts or anywhere where you want to get up to speed from a stop or crawl.

Obviously blasting along back roads is good too but may not be too often that happens.

What year is your Gtd?? 151? 5k to come up to a 151 GTI?

Is that now very low for a year and half old car?

it is.. in my opinion too but a few lads on here suggested that the depreciation would level out. I always factored 7k for the first year, 4 thereafter per year for a car of that cost new.

I figured that the 151 GTI would depreciate at the same level so I figured 5k was too much to change over

Is a gti not less expensive than a gtd? If so sounds like mad money

It's roughly the same price as mine was new with the extras it has.

BTW that's the trade in price I've been quoted off GTIs and the R. Hefty reduction in the value in my car for just over a year but the garages seem to have one eye on the PCP figures as they all get mine checked out before making an offer. Probably the residual

I paid 39k in Jan 2015 for a gti PP that listed at 42k and traded it in in July for 31.5k which was I felt a very good deal.
I think values have softened as there seems to be a lot of cars out there now but I would have thought your car should easily be 29/30k.
No way would I spend 5 to go to a same age gti with a worse spec.
You might actually do better to get a quote for a Jan 2017 car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Agreed. 5k to change to a similar car, same age, worse spec - is not a good deal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,099 ✭✭✭noelf

The face lifted Golf won't be available for January delivery according to a local dealer who rang me to see if I was interested in trading in ..

You'd be mad to go for the 151GTI . I thought the GTI would depreciate more than the GTD after 1 year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,799 ✭✭✭carsfan2

I was told by sales man that gti/ gtd depreciate the same. It's not like other cars in Ireland where the diesel always holds its value better.
People in the market for a gti know what they want apparently and fuel economy is not a top priority.

A girl in work has just bought a 162 R Line Golf, TSi in white.

I must say its a fabulous looking car, it has rear LED's, 17's and the nice kit, may even have Xenons. Would this be the 1.2 engine? 110bhp?

Do they come with the 1.4 ACT engine at all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 920 ✭✭✭Ron Burgundy II

Only the highline came with the 1.4TSi, which she may have. It's brand new so I would imagine she hasn't gone and changed items on it so the 1.4 version will have twin exhausts and the red Si.

The rear leds look good on the car, I wish I had spec'd them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,902 ✭✭✭hooch-85

Its definitely an R Line as opposed to highline so im guessing it's the 1.2 TSI. Is your TSi the ACT model?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,551 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Rear LED lights and leather seats are now standard on the Highline.

I have a highline with an r-line kit. You maybe thinking of an edition r? As far as I'm aware this was a limited edition run which hasn't continued on for 162 cars.

Yeah I have the 1.4 with the ACT

    Would it be an Allstar?

Golf is now Trendline, Allstar, Highline, GTi/GTD, R.

Allstar replaced Comfortline and Lounge Models - can't remember when the Edition-R was discontinued. Allstar gets Nav and Pano roof, but only 16" wheels

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,902 ✭✭✭hooch-85

There's so many different specs now it's hard to differentiate!

Ron you could be right, it could be an Edition R. I'll note the reg next time i see it and see what cartell throws up for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,551 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I see they have launched a GTi Clubsport Edition 40 limited edition to celebrate 40 years of the GTi. Only 1000 examples being brought to the UK, power is up to 261bhp and is costing similar money to the R.

Is that the version with no rear seats?

    Edit:
The car I'm thinking is the Clubsport S

Is that not the standard replacement for the performance pack gti?
