Just got my Poliwrath back after 8 days in a gym. Haven't actually used him to battle a gym yet as he was thrown straight in to defend after I got him. He's 1713cp with 98.4 IV. His moves are bubble and submission. Is he worth powering up or should I be trying to find one with a better moveset?

He is fine for a gym defender, there are better defender move sets, but bubble is the best first attack, that's what makes it so good as a defender.

I have stopped powering mons up. As you level up the amount of stardust and candies it takes to power them up decreases.
Also inevitablty you will end up with a second one which is stronger again shortly after you power up.

Eevee's are becoming very rare for me. I still have just the 1 vaporeon (probably only have him because of the Rainer trick).
I have 6 Jolteons and 2 Flareons but it's been weeks since I had an Eevee evolve.
I used to have 2 with every lucky egg.

Went to glasnevin cemetery to get some pokestops cos I only had 4 normal pokeballs left. Millions of stops there, but bloody hell, the app crashed about 20 times. Loads of pokestops I went up to and spun and got nothing. Then eventually a "try again later" after not getting anything.
Also used an incense and got a grand total of 2 rattatas and 2 zubats!

    Do you not mean increases?

    No, I mean decreases.

Basically your pokemon maxes out at 1.5 times your level, so if you are 25 the max level pokemon you can have with be 40 but to get a pokemon from level 39 to 40 would cost you 10,000 star dust because you are about to hit max (the white dot is all the way over at full on the CP arc).
2 short years later and you are level 40 so the same pokemon would have a 1 to 1 level ratio and the white dot is only 2/3rds of the way along the arc and the cost to move him up a level drops accordingly (circa 3,000 stardust).

So evolve first and power up later (if you want)?

Rather than power up, evolve, power up again?

I originally thought you were saying that the stardust requirements to power up your Pokemon would decrease as your trainer level increased, e.g. Lv25: Stardust cost at Max arc = 4500 / Lv35: Stardust cost at Max arc = 3500.

Cheers for the explanation; it makes sense now. I also don't feel as bad for spending hundreds of thousands on powering up my 'mon over the last few months :)

    Never power up before evolving.
You could power up and then get a crap move set and you've just wasted candies and star dust on a dud.
    Always evolve first.
And if it's a 3 stage evolve then wait until you can do both evolves.

No problem, the issue arises more when you go over the 3.5k per power up, but it's something to be aware of.

My top 6 mon are all maxed up on their CP, and I think cost me 4,500 each in dust to power up.

When I hit level 28, I plan on powering them up again. Are you saying I should wait till I'm at 30 as it will cost less dust as there will be further to go on the CP arc?

Maybe I misinterpreted the article I read on the silph road (I can't find it) but that was my understanding.
It takes 2 power ups for your mon to move level, so if it is in between levels and you level up it gets complicated.

If you look at all the pro players on youtube they all have 500,000+ star dust.

I've hatched a good 50 5k eggs at least I reckon, still no doduo or porygon.. :(
lv 28 now, up to 111/111 seen/caught in the Dex

I have 518 eggs total hatched, I make out at least 260-290 of those are 5km and I haven't got Porygon, Grimer or Lickitung from one yet!
Took ages to get Doduo aswell, then I got three times in three days.

There was a lickatung spawn near my house in the 1st week or two, so ended up catching two, the highest one has 19cp, have never seen one in the two months since :D

The madness, how much have you spent on coins?

And presumably they also have mons that are way lower in CP than they potentially could be?

Yes but their potential grows as you go level up as a trainer, that's the point, I think.

They definitely seem to become more scarce to me over the last 2-3 weeks around Dublin.

As an aside, we got 5 legendarys (plus Ditto) and 3 non-Euro Pokemon. So thats 9 removed from the list. How many are people short apart from those ATM?
Im short 24 in the 'dex, with 10 of those expected to be filled by the weekend due evolves combined with buddy earned candies.
Of the remaining 14, a lot of walking or hatching will fill those slots. (An massive amount of walking for Venosaur, Charizard, Alikazam and Dragonite!)
Only ones needing luck are Lapras, Snorlax and Aerodactyl.

Agreed, I get that, but if you always want to have the strongest mon possible for fighting etc, then you need to power them up each time you level up.

Which is what I want to do, albeit I now understand that it's costing me max candies and dust each time, whereas if I waited to level up a few times, it would be "cheaper" to power up.

it's 250,000 XP now to level up to 28, so I guess it's about 750,000 in total to get me to Level 30. Which means I'd be waiting about 8-10 weeks to save a few thousand dust and a few candies.

I'll keep powering up as I level up I think for now :D:D

Only need 8 more here (7 after I evolve grimer later tonight). Of those, I'm pretty close (less than 10 candies away) to evolving Diglett and Graveler, about 20 candies from evolving Omanyte and then a good bit away from getting a Charizard, Venasaur, Alakazam and Machamp.

    Picked up my 11th 10k egg today. 11 is a lucky number...right?? 6.7k down and I'm already getting egg-citement. You'd think I'd learn.....

Eh...yeah. why?? aerodactyl. Magmar. Scyther. 4 Electabuzz in a row. Hitmonchan. Pinsir and another magmar. Nothing worth getting excited about really. Aero was my first one so cp not great sadly. Good one to cross off the dex though.

I got a hitmon and a couple scyther and a pinsir. Have another one on the go at the moment, I would like an aero or a magmar

    Because!

I got my 10k egg at around level 12/13 and it was a Magmar, but I got a more powerful Magmar in Merrion Sq a few days later. Haven't had a single ounce of luck getting a 10k since then.

I don't want to think about that :) Incubators are the only thing I spend coins on though

Gonna be quoting myself a bit here so sorry for the vanity but hopefully people find it useful/ mildly interesting

How many evolutions can I fit in to a lucky egg run? I have 45 at the minute but I reckon I could get close to 70.

Got 58 in the 30 minutes. I reckon you could push 70 if you weren't adding to the pokedex, I added about 10, and were, more efficient maneuvering the screen.

15 but a weak 15. Gotten from walking to the bus stop catching rattatas and Pidgeys. When I'm back in college, in town, I'm hopefully gonna start catching some real strong pokemon. My highest CP at the minute is a Hypno at 627 but I'm catching wild Pokemon ~ level 400 at times now. When I start evolving these I'll get some real strong pokemon. I have 2 lucky eggs still to use as well. Need a few more pokemon before it's worth my while using it. Hopefully gonna jump a whole level or two when I do.

Level 20, almost 21 and I've 9 Pokemon over 1000 CP and I've 24 over 627, which was my strongest when making this post. Finally feel like I can start taking gyms and maybe even holding them overnight. Was losing interest in the game but capturing gyms might keep me going a while longer. Pokedex is 69/71

19 years (or 6931 days) to level 40 hahaha

In fairness though I have been saving all my evolutions to do a lucky egg run. Have 37 at the minute and many, many of them will be new pokemon to me. Gonna wait until I have 50-60 evolutions I think.

Down to 14 years hahaha and only a year and a half or so to level 30.

Does having stronger Pokemon or being a higher level mean stronger pokemon pop up in the wild?

Nice use of my lucky egg

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 10,074 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tenger

Yup. Being higher trainer level will increase the chance of hatching/seeing higher CP pokemons.
However this is just statistics, I found and caught a CP 43 Eevee this evening!!

Still looking forward to the luxury of evolving my 14 CP Eevee....have had it for about 6-7 weeks now. Back when Eevee's were easy to find. Want to have a cute sub 100 CP Jolt/Vapor/Flareon.

To a degree yes but you'll still get the usual crap cp mons aswell but the maximum you'll see in the wild will be higher and then you CP ??? and you get so excited and if you catch and its not that high its terrible and if you don't you think you just lost a world beater.
