I went to a physical therapist last year with a torn calf before I went to my physio. I didn't realise there was a difference. He advised me to rub cream cheese into it as the protein would help heal it.
Apparently anybody can do a simple few week course and become a physical - but physios are college educated for years. They both charged the same price - and I had to buy my own cheese!

Hmm, that's obviously an awful experience to have however, I see a physical therapist who's also a runner. He's far better than any of the physiotherapists I've seen over the years. From experience they tend to treat the one problem area whereas the physical therapist is quite good at looking at the big picture and seeing where imbalances / weakness are that might need working on. The bottom line is once you find someone you trust and have had success with it doesn't really matter which qualification they hold. There are good and bad in every medical area.

I got really sick a few years ago with phenumia just before we went on holidays - a bad cold turned really bad very quickly. It really knocked me so when I got myself together again I bought a Nutribullet and use it everyday since and love it.
I dont eat meat so I try to add nuts for protein in it and make at least 2 a day - I am a queen at green juicing - since I got it I have had maybe one cold and I put it down to all the green juicing.

Feeling tired today so please send positive energy to me to get through my LSR tomorrow

Good luck to everyone on their runs this evening....had to put mine off until tomorrow one of those life getting in the way things.

Just done a couple of miles with the work couch to 5k ones after work.

Got pretty much the 6 miles done yesterday split into two runs as was doing the Grant Thornton 5k.

Hoping to do the 1/2 marathon course + 3 added miles for the LSR on Sat.

Did 8m PMP at lunchtime today (well extended lunch :-)). Had a strange one. First few miles I felt terrible for some reason. During the third mile I felt really queasy and could not keep my PMP (though my heart rate seemed to be normal). At that point in my head I gave up on the PMP and honestly thought I would not be able to finish the run at all. Here's the strange bit - as I started the 4th mile I started to feel really good to the point where I flew the last 5 miles making the PMP plus the little time I lost without a problem. I felt really good at the end. I'm putting it down to running a little too soon after eating which must have passed as I progressed. Also I note that for me a queasy stomach hugely effects my ability to perform.

Such a relief to have today's 11 miles over with. I made the mistake of not bringing any water with me, hadn't realised how warm it was. Started to get really thirsty from about the half way point. Don't think I've ever been so thirsty in my life; I started hallucinating about ice cold water and ribena (I very rarely drink ribena:confused:) and ice pops. Then I had to run past the Barge pub & see so many people outside drinking in the sun:mad: But I managed to keep up the pace so happy overall.

Whoever decided to put that run on a work day in the Boards plan is a bad person and they should feel bad. All done though. :P

    Well done also Pomplamousse.

yay 11 miles with 9 @pmp completed pmp miles a little quicker that they should be at somewhere around 9.45 pace instead of 10.18 .

Warm day for it , the good news for anyone on the boards plan all our runs from here on in are repeats of runs we're all ready completed so there are no more unknowns. \o/

    11 miles @134 bpm 9.58 pace

Ugh, that was not a fun run, I hope I don't feel like that on October 30th!

I even had a good massage from the physio last night so was expecting to feel nice and loose today, but instead I felt very drained and sluggish, it was a real struggle to get around the distance.

Got it done I suppose, but if I feel like that in the first 10k of the marathon I will be in trouble.

Well done on the 11 miler today guys. I did mine this time last week in the pouring rain. Good to have it under our belts.

So..I was all set to do the Charleville half marathon on Sunday. I had moved the weeks around and have been tapering back the miles this week. My boss then presented me today with two tickets for the all Ireland on Sunday. My fiancée is a die hard Mayo fan so it looks like I'm going to Dublin on Sunday.

I'm going to have to do what I did for the 10 mile race that I couldn't make either and do a time trial in its place on Saturday. Very hard to push yourself as hard outside a race but I'll give it a go. The plan is for 2 mile warm up and 13.1 @ HMP which for me is around 8:30/mi

I think the idea is at this stage we are all running with a certain amount of tiredness in the legs that will not be there on marathon day, My legs were tired from the off today but energy wise I felt good, Think I'll have to get younger legs. :)

^^^well done guys, that was a tough run indeed, midweek on tired legs on a warm evening. Fair play to you all for getting through it, it should give you some confidence on the day when your legs will be much fresher after the taper so remember it when you're standing on the start line :)

Found todays run tough too...8m at pmp, did it on grass but felt shattered from the get go. Glad its done.
As for colds, etc...I work in a school and collect every sick child going home from their classroom...maybe I should get a sick cert until October 31st :D

I have found the day after a sports massage I feel heavy while running, but give it another day or two and I feel brilliant and all loose.

Just put my 1.8 miles on the spreadsheet - then noticed how far behind my total milage is to everyone else :( I've only clocked 256 miles in the last 12 weeks - is that going to be enough? I am doing a 26 week plan so had a good base coming in, but I'm under no illusions- I really can't afford to get injured again.

It was a painfree run so that's a big fat bonus :)

Great news on the pain free run. You're not that far behind really. And you're beating me this week.

Not sure how I got that run done this evening.. But it's done. Came up short at 10.6.but did 7.8 yesterday at a brisk pace so reckon that caught up with me today.. Didn't get out till after 9PM so was in the dark on many foot paths I haven't run before.. Glad to get thru it and well done to all who completed it.

Came home and had a nice cold protein shake, a lovely dinner and 2 oranges to help fight off the cold I feel coming on.. Now I'm stuffed, but with a great sense of achievement.

Haven't looked at what's on the schedule tomorrow.. Hope it's kind.

Just to slightly reassure you, guys. You should be tired. Each run at this stage should be tougher than the last few weeks. You should be begging the lord of time to speed things up to taper week(s). I'm not on this plan, but my own plan has me pretty tired right now. My legs are stiff, achey, and I did a 10 mile run rather than the planned 6 mile last night because I can't read, so overall, it's normal to feel like you do!

Back at the physio this morning, mixed news - I have sciatica, but I can start running again tonight. (1 mile tonight, 1 mile tomorrow, Friday off and if I'm painfree I can do 10 - 12 very very easy at the weekend :) )
I have to do all runs at LSR pace for the next week to ensure my bursitis has fully cleared up.
It could be worse, I'm not out yet!!!

Excellent news, Kittyclaws. Take it very easy coming back - don't worry about things you can't control (the mileage up to now, for example), just focus on the weeks ahead. Very glad to have you back!

Going stir crazy here. Can't remember the last time I went more than 3 days without running and today is day 5 :(

Don't panic A, you'll be ok. Rest now is better than going out and wrecking yourself.

Can you get out and cycle so to try and feel like you are achieving something if you need to get out?

What's the update on returning and how is it feeling now?

    I haven't ran in 199 days and I'm fine.

Thanks, your injury and recovery puts mine into perspective!

It's feeling better at the moment, but a little stiff. The frustration is probably because I feel I could try now, but that's asking for trouble.
I'm working from home today and tomorrow so I don't have to do any walking. I agreed with the physio that I'd try a very easy 8-10 miles on Saturday and go back on Monday. However, I've brought the appointment forward to Friday as I want to make sure she thinks it's ok to run before I try.

I'm feeling the same Kingpin! It's been over a week now.

I had my physio appointment today - I have damaged the cartilage in my left knee. I need to take another two weeks completely off running to let it heal  So I won't be doing the half marathon next week, which is a shame as I was really looking forward to it.

As for the marathon, it's a case of wait and see. I will go back to him in two weeks to see how I'm healing, and then maybe think about easing myself back into training. He wasn't too concerned about me missing too much, because I have the bulk of my training done. If I heal I will still be able to complete the marathon, just maybe with a less ambitious target time. And I'm ok with that.

In the meantime, he suggested swimming. There's a pool near me which opens late 3 nights a week, so I might start that. He also gave me excercises to strengthen the muscles, and told me to ice the area for 3 X 10mins every evening. So fingers crossed.

I missed 3 days at end of holiday few weeks back.. I was same; was nearly running out of the car when home.

Hi KC, You've more miles than me so I hope it's enough :-). You have me worried now. I lost almost 3 weeks with injury in July but was surprised how little fitness I lost. I had a decent base too as you do but you are now even further on than I was so I'd say you will be absolutely grand. Delighted for you that you you are pain free and running again.

    There's only 2 miles between us :D
The problem is I'm not painfree at all, but I am back running. Physio says I'll be sore anyway until the sciatica clears up - the best thing for it is gentle exercise, so I'm trying to gently train for a marathon!! I sit at a desk for 9 hours a day which is the worst thing for it, so I'm like a meerkat standing every 10 minutes to stretch out my back, but I think I'm starting to get better.
You've given me hope with missing 3 weeks and coming back strong, I always hear that a good base is half the battle - I'll be seriously testing that theory :)

I assume everyone has their planned marathon pace now, or if not a very close idea of what you hope it will be. My question is when it comes to training when you have a PMP run scheduled do most aim for a average pmp on the entire run or break it down each kilometre/mile? Sometimes on a hilly route where I'm climbing constantly for 3 or 4km towards the end of the hill my pace will drop down a second or two per km. Also do you train for exactly the pace you want or a pace maybe five minutes faster?

I trained at around 8:45/mi for PMP, but I'm planning on being much closer to 9 minute miles on the day. That's about 5 minutes or so difference in the total time.

I do nearly all my running on out-and-back routes, and tried to maintain the same pace regardless of hills etc. That meant working pretty hard on uphills, but the easier downhills would have balanced it out I guess.
