I've been doing 400 reps every other week all along - admittedly this kind of thing seems out of place on a marathon plan, but it was nice to have a bit of variety. I was thinking of doing a couple of miles at MP instead of the 400s next week, but I don't know if I'd feel comfortable leaving it as late as Wednesday.

    I'm following BAA Level 2.

    Thanks for the input!

I'm not an expert by any means but my understanding is that you should keep doing what you have been doing, but just less volume. So if you have been doing them all along, I guess keep them in there. Don't go any faster than 10K pace though.

I'm in stitches here Wubble Wubble at the thought of trying to a 20 mile lsr around the deck of a ship. Admire the dedication to run in such circumstances though . Major Kudos to you for getting what you did in.

Agreed, the thoughts of it brought me straight back here again:

I run with a belt and a 500ml water bottle which I have at my back - i like it now as on the LSRs I get so so thirsty and I like to just sip on it throughout my run - have a big bottle of water back at the car too .
Bought my belt in heatons as on Sportdirect with the postage it was expensive.
Has a little pocket for bits and bobs too .

Another run this evening on the treadmill - tried some speed work - its didnt work - I have one pace only and thats slow !

Spin tomorrow night but for now I am of to my second shift at work - the joys

Conference thingy tomorrow. Running afterwards will be a good way to clear my head and to get away from social media. ;) Pleasant enough 4 miles tonight.

Great report from the cruise ship, good to know the practicalities of that sort of set up.

Another 12 miles done tonight. Tired towards the end but think due to hunger.Feeling much better in general. As enda would say seems like my mojo is back..

    I still can't run :(

My knee was feeling better ish, so I went out for a short test run yesterday night. It started hurting almost immediately, so I had to turn around and walk home. And then it was quite sore all day today. I have a physio appointment on Thursday, so I suppose I'll just have to take it easy until then.

It's exactly one week today since I could last run. I really hope it will be ok! This is very frustrating.

A speedy recovery to everyone else suffering injuries.

Hope everything goes ok with the physio G. Be patient, still plenty of time and you still have the fitness.

Kids back to school, colds have arrived to the house already.. got a bit of a sore throat and can feel that "run down" feeling coming into the body; small gum blister is early give away.. Suppose better get some immunity now than in late Oct

Hmm.. 11M today is gonna be a challenge but hopefully get it done OK! Over ran on the 6M last night to 7.8M but no problems in general.

Think I will enjoy some tapering next week for the HM!

I am absolutely dreading this run, proper dreading. Think I should be able to finish work & get out for the run at 4pm, just to get it over with. Bleugh.

My plan to try get home early too.. becoming too risky running in the dark, one trip and that could be end of things!

Saw mention of head torches etc. but living in suburbia I'm not sure head torch would be acceptable..:pac:

    NOVICES BEWARE!!
It is that time of year where Mr ManFlu is on the prowl......he wrecked my DCM in 2014  so I know what I am talking about!!

Your immune systems may be low due to the high mileage in recent weeks, so IMO stock up on Rubex/Beeline/Seven Seas multi vitamins etc and get plenty of early nights to keep yourself in good health.

Avoid large crowds, family gatherings, especially ones with snotty nose kids, avoid the Cinema, Luas, Buses(when they are running ;)), Trains etc... pat the kids on the head at night time, no bed time stories for the next few weeks just to be safe....

You have worked too hard all year to be struck down by a cold/flu.....

P.S. I am not sure what the female version of 'Man Flu' is but it can't be as bad as the strain that affects men .....I suppose Novice women should look after themselves too .... :D

Obviously being the superior species we just get on with it......

In all seriousness some good advice there from smash (well, not sure about the patting the kids on the head bit :D)

Echinea are excellent too - get a box now and start taking them daily until after DCM. As Nop regularly reminds us, eat your greens!! And 8 hours sleep every night between now and DCM!

I have the worst immune system ever. This year alone I've had the flu (actual bedbound flu as opposed to that paltry 'man flu', despite having had the flu vaccination), 2 throat infections that required antibiotics, and about 4 or 5 headcolds. And I've a pretty good diet/sleep pattern/take multivitamins. So I may need to live in a bubble for the next 6 weeks!

There are three ways to avoid having a cold during a marathon.

    1. Avoid all human contact in the weeks coming up to the marathon.
    2. If you must be near pesky humans, wash your hands regularly and don't put them near your mouth or nose (or on things that go near same). Also don't put other humans' hands into your mouth or nose (might be difficult for those with young kids).
    3. Get any colds doing the rounds well in advance of the marathon.

I got a cold about 3 weeks out from the marathon last year, and was delighted - even if it did make the last long run a bit of a pain. I still went around with some hand cleaning stuff all week before the marathon, and will be doing the same this year! The next few weeks is a great time to get a cold, so make sure you stand close to the sneezy person on the train and get licking your hands obsessively! ;)

There's about 200 different cold viruses, though, so statistically speaking I don't think getting a cold 3 weeks out makes it any less likely you won't get another one 2 weeks later.

I felt a sore throat/cold coming on the week of Rotterdam, started eating large amounts of manuka honey that week and it seemed to make a big difference.

Back at the physio this morning, mixed news - I have sciatica, but I can start running again tonight. (1 mile tonight, 1 mile tomorrow, Friday off and if I'm painfree I can do 10 - 12 very very easy at the weekend :) )
I have to do all runs at LSR pace for the next week to ensure my bursitis has fully cleared up.
It could be worse, I'm not out yet!!!

Mrs CFR picked up a bad cold last week before the Athlone half. I could feel myself starting to get it a day before the race but seemed to fight it off luckily enough.

Sure, though I think the number of active colds in a population is a lot smaller in a given period of time. Looks like the only option is to avoid all human contact, and communicate exclusively to the outside world via boards.ie

Update for the first half of the week...

Mon 12/9 - Rest - Con Te Partiro

After yet another monster breakfast, it was time to say Arrivederci to Jewel Of The Seas, and Ciao Bella Roma, as we had booked a night in the Eternal City after the cruise.

    Tue 13/9 - 6 miles @ 7:46 p/m.

We got home about 2:30, and after a bit of housekeeping and unpacking, it was time to get the runners again and get back on the plan. This run consisted of 3 loops near the house; I really felt the extra weight starting off, but gradually worked my way into it.

    Wed 14/9 - 12 miles w/ 9@PMP

I'd had my eye on this one for a long while. Especially after the holidays, I knew it would be a stern test, regardless of what pace I went out at. A half mile waddle from the house to a very quiet Porterstown was followed by a 9:26 warmup mile, before the real fun began. In my head, I had an average of 8:15 in mind, taking in account I'd averaged about 8:05 for 6 miles two weeks ago, but also factoring in the break. Splits as follows:-

    1 - 7:37
    2 - 7:52
    3 - 8:01
    4 - 7:54
    5 - 7:56
    6 - 8:02
    7 - 7:54
8 & 9 - 15:51 combined; I thought I'd pressed the Lap button at the end of 8, apparently not.

Lap 1 was a real "steady on!" moment; I eased off considerably for the rest. Nowhere near as consistent as the previous session, and maybe a tiny bit quick. It was a very windy day, with the breeze in my face as I tackled the uphill sections. A mile cooldown (9:46) and a shuffle home brought the mileage up to 12 for the day. Good luck to all who haven't taken this one on yet; it'll really test you, but if it goes well, you'll feel fantastic afterwards!!!

Must be 20 degrees out there. Did a loop of the park via the Carpenterstown road. Didn't bother with warm-up or cool down pace so decided to run all 11 miles at the same pace.

Fastest lap was 8:03 at the 10mile mark, easily had another 10miles left at overall pace I think.....

    11m @ 08:38

Not at the moment anyway A.... have had 3:45 in my mind for a while, but as you say, the times today and two weeks ago have been way ahead of that. Still not certain that I'm selling myself short with the above target. 10 days from now I should be able to give a more definitive answer :)

Btw, what's the difference between a physical therapist and a physiotherapist?

    Was this answered?
I went to a physical therapist last year with a torn calf before I went to my physio. I didn't realise there was a difference. He advised me to rub cream cheese into it as the protein would help heal it.
Apparently anybody can do a simple few week course and become a physical - but physios are college educated for years. They both charged the same price - and I had to buy my own cheese!
