But doesn't that imply that girls are stupid?

As you get older though, you've to show you're contempt towards women in different ways.

    touched a nerve did I .

come on now how is this any of your business.
next you will be saying that kids playing cowboys and Indians are being aggressive towards each other
I didn't necessarily say it was my business, and that was why I stayed out of it at the time. And I didn't hint at aggression - I hinted at contempt.

Just because they're not thugs doesn't mean they're not arseholes! You have to be some sort of an arsehole to qualify though.

Really? Well then picture Ann Robinson's, or Gillian Anderson's reaction?

Perhaps you're very tolerant and try to see the good in people, or maybe you're poor at picking up on social queues!

Never a good idea to try to pick up on social queues. The people there are usually broke....

Jeez it's After Hours, chill ! It is a thing though you have to admit. Otherwise 50 shades would have zero sales, and James Dean would be an anonymous car mechanic.

Some women like arseholes. Some women like guys who look like James Dean. Many, many women prefer a guy who's a decent human being. Shock horror not all women are the same!

As for the success of 50 Shades - nobody can work that one out, it's completely inexplicable.

(And yes, this is AH. Where there's another thread that recently said women who are abused deserve little sympathy because they should just get out at the first sign of trouble and if they fail to do so, tough. Any wonder some of the women on this forum might be feeling a little sensitive on this topic right now?)

The lads saying women only go for arseholes are probably the self labelled "nice guys"

    :pac:

Well whoever said that was a complete ass. And thankfully not all women are the same, as are not all men. I've met many decent people over the years and some real assholes of both genders (or both main genders lest I offend someone)

Well my women chasing days are long gone so I've no personal involvement but I have seen genuine brutes being chased frantically by some girls in a way that no other type of guy was. And I mean violent brutes, not "guys who play by their own rules". And you couldn't tell them these guys were just bad even though it was obvious to everyone else.

This isn't some excuse for violence against women being their own fault; it's just something I've seen several times.

    Exactly, that's all I'm saying :)

The problem with that attitude is that guys who are genuinely nice are either giving up on women or treating them badly as they are ridiculed for being "nice guys that will find some great girl one day, just not me" lol sure that's what they all want to hear

Then going off with Shane who "just hit her once this week he's a good person deep down and she deserved it anyway" It was painful to watch

Does all AH threads end up as low level women bashing?

That's offensive and degrading to women!

It's true for some women. I'm not offended or degraded when someone posts something negative about some men that's true. It's AH so should be taken with a grain of salt. Here's a song about it, sung by a woman ..

    https://youtu.be/i6zE2kZRKlo

If I actually believed all women were like that, that would be another story entirely. Equally if the other person believed all men are the same.

After hours ???? Groan. It's not supposed to be backed up by peer reviewed journals. Just as someone might say Germans have no sense of humour. It's one of those silly comments people make that are not meant seriously.

You can't be sexist either- it's in the charter apparently...

OK I was not trying to be sexist. I can see that my initial comment could be seen as sexist. I will clearly state in future if I try to make a joke that it is actually a joke in future. I apologise if I offended anyone, it was not my intention.

The word some would have made it far less offensive

Fair enough. I find it interesting that no one was offended by another poster suggesting the youth should be "tenderised" with a hurley. I took that as a joke.

Well it would have just been factually correct in that case.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,849 ✭✭✭professore

It's kind of frustrating when you try to have an open tongue in cheek discussion that I think could be genuinely interesting and useful in trying to understand different viewpoints without it descending into being called sexist because of a comment that to me at least was in the spirit of AH and could have been countered with a light-hearted remark about all men being XYZ or whatever.

It's the modern equivalent of blasphemy. Does no one else think this, or is it just me? Maybe it's just me. I'm past caring anyway. The funniest part of all is that in real life most women like me and enjoy putting me in my place and very occasionally I manage to do the same to them. And I've great respect for women ( or anyone ) who can debate with me without resorting to labelling. It's like bad political debate - show how bad your opponent is, rather than how good you are.

I have no idea how we got here so I'm off to bed. Night everyone !

If you read it fully, you'll find that it also talks about backseat moderation

The poster has explained their poor phrasing. Now, can we all move on?

As for the thread: I don't know about you but when I was little— which wasn't long ago — this was called 'playing'.

A thread about pretend kicks. Jesus wept.

Teen girls love a bad boy.

In fact the girls are bigger dopes as I've seen them encourage hard lads to act harder.

Thank you for making realise my hidden poetic talent. I haven't listened to much Indie, but I think it definitely fits in with Mark Knopfler's style of writing - I could imagine it fitting into a song like 'You're Latest Trick' by dire straits.
