I don't think I'm the one that needs to 'give over'.

In what strange world does remembering a particular event on it's anniversary in any trivialize other events?

To me it was an event the likes of which I have never seen before or since.....although if you can give me a list of other events in which thousands of innocent people were murdered live on television I will happily stand corrected.

Nobody is advocating that the whole thing be forgotten. Remember it all you want but don't go around saying it was the worst massacre in history or in recent times and then slag of or accuse of insensitivity those who disagree with your melodramatic pronouncements.

What are you trying to accomplish? You want to wring your hands and speak in solemn tones and get everyone to shed a crocodile tear and wistfully agree with you?

It is the fact that it is only a slow video that gives conspiracy theorists a gap to fill in with all the speculation.

I ask you "where did the disappeared aircraft go?"
Four aeroplanes were hijacked each containing about 100 passengers, all four crashed, one was prevented from reaching its intended target by passengers who overcame the hijackers but were unable to save the plane. The others crashed into their intended targets.

You said there was CCTV footage from multiple angles showing a plane hitting the building. Then you produce the only footage that DOESN'T show a plane hitting the building and your excuse is that it was a slow video and a fast plane.

You then have a dig at people for picking holes in an official explanation. If the official is that easy to pick holes in then it can't be very sound to begin with. What's your problem with that? No wreckage, no engines, no bodies, no damage to the lawn outside the building, nothing. You can't explain this, nobody can, yet when someone asks this very simple question you call them names rather than answer it.

Where on earth did this rubbish come from?!

I am entitled to think what I want about this event and I respect everyone else's entitlement to do the same.

Where or when did I slag anyone off or accuse them of anything?

OK look at this one so!

As for the other videos, they are out there but you just have to look for them, I don't have any links and yes I have seen them maybe 15 years ago.

I was in Portugal (still am) coming from the beach I see lots of people gathered around a tv at one of the beach bars, which was very unusual, went over and seen reruns of the first plane hitting the tower ,thought and hoped it was an accident, Then the other plane hit, wow knew this was a game changer.

How could you have seen reruns of the first plane hitting the building?
That footage wasn't released until the following day.

Still done see any plane I am afraid.

The real conspiracy theorists say a missile hit the building. This footage does nothing to disprove that theory.

There are no other videos (released) what so ever.

I think I should apologise at this point because this thread has turned into something I never intended it to be.

I simply started it as a memorial to that day and a discussion about it and how things have changed since.

It was never my intention to come across as hand wringing or melodramatic. I have no intention or or interest in slagging anyone, insulting or belittling anyone.

I seem to have caused a certain amount of anger and argument and for that I do apologise.

I just don't see what's so wrong with wanting to remember 9/11 on this its 15th anniversary and to have an adult discussion about it?

I was at a the funeral of a managing director of a company I worked for, we were getting a taxi back to the hotel when the driver was telling us what was unfolding in new York. It was like a Stephen King novel. Scary stuff.

That was from a Channel4 crew who were filming a "normal" day in the lives of the New York Fire Department.

I've looked at that footage a dozen times and I still don't see an airliner in it.
As for the other footage...you can't have seen them. They don't exist.

No documentary or news report or vlog or whatever whether "official" or "unofficial" has ever shown any other footage showing other angles of a plane crashing into the Pentagon. None. All CCTV from surrounding businesses and gas stations was immediately seized and confiscated shortly after the event.

I had come home from school around 3.00, not knowing much except a teacher saying there was "an accident in NY when a plane hit a tall building".

Checking google, UK time, 1st plane crashed at 2.03pm, 2nd hit at 2.30pm and the buildings collapsed 3.03pm and 3.28pm.

I was home "in time" to see the second fall, and I distinctly remember seeing video footage of both planes crashing on the same day.
It was some years ago, but seeing the planes hit shocked me so hard to forget.

So I would say its likely footage of one of the planes at least were being played on the same day, if not both (plus the other crashes)

Yes, the French guys, but that footage was not released on the day of 9/11 so one COULDN'T have seen reruns of the first plane hitting the building until at least September 12th.

No need to apologise. The last thread on this went the same way too unfortunately. This is modern life.

You may have seen footage of the first crash but you couldn't have seen it ON September 11th. There were no network cameras filming the towers prior to the first crash. Of course there were plenty filming it AFTER the first crash and they were obviously well position to capture the unexpected second crash. The independent footage of the first crash didn't make it into the hands of the networks for broadcast until the following day.

Was an irony to it after much funding for the IRA came from New York.

We were talking about this subject at dinner and someone made what i considet a daft suggestion. My question is did George W Bush have a meeting with Hollywood scriptwriters shortly after 9/11 to come up with various scenarios that could be played out in reality?

Today they played a lovely version of Danny Boy on the flute at the memorial at ground zero.
I was watching on Sky news and Tim Marshal said New York is an 'Irish city' and a lot of those who died from the police and fire services had Irish ancestry.
He mentioned how Irish people have been going to New York sine the 'late 1800s', given today is the national day for commemorating the famine, one gets the feeling the British are embarrassed by that as they near never mention it, but that is why the North east of the USA is like a home away from home for Irish people and why one fifth of the dead on 9/11 were Irish Americans.

When it became clear what was happening, he did order any planes that appeared to be hijacked to be shot out of the sky to stop more buildings full of people being hit.

It was one of the worst events in living memory but I feel it's time for those of us not personally affected to move on. The endless tv shows and other coverage every year is a bit much 15 years on.

The Titanic disaster remained a shocking event for decades after. There was a similar commission of inquiry plus endless movies and books. The disaster was symbolic of the end of a gilded age which ended in revolution and world wars.

The significance of 9/11 is far more important than the death toll and destruction. It signals the end of the complacency of the post Cold War era symbolized by the supposed End of History and the good times of the Clinton administration when it seemed America's power was assured.

We now live a world characterized by a struggle between the US and China with Russia and Saudi Arabia as lesser powers fighting proxie wars. Terrorism is just mood music really.

For the baby boomers the assassination of JFK was the defining event because subsequently LBJ administration led America into the Vietnam quagmire while the Nixon Ford and Carter periods were a time of humiliation drift and economic decline. Everything appeared to go wrong after November 1963.

Woken up by a 'phone call, saw the news, put a uniform in the car and went off to work, not knowing if I'd be at home that evening or are my unit preparing to go to war. (I was home that evening, in the end)

That said, while a significant event in history, I don't think it particularly means anything to me. I'm not a fan of over memorializing things. Pearl harbor, 9/11, Boston marathon, memorial day... Over time, as more things happen in history, every danged day of the year will be a day of remembrance. It's going to go too far.

Let not the day be forgotten, and learned from, but that's about as far as it needs to go

Who are the fastest readers in the world?

New Yorkers. Some of them go through 110 stories in 5 seconds.

Some things shouldn't be joked about.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the reaction and sit smug on your couch for the rest of the day.

Did you see this video doing the rounds. Some people are plain thick.

Apparently it has not ended well for them at all.

I was working in Dundrum when news broke. Afterwards I went into town and met a friend for a drink. The pub, on tbe Quays, was showing coverage on TV. It was so quiet. Never known a busy pub to be so quiet.
