If I can get a 20 yr old .750 fiat panda to 135 I think a Yaris can get to that easily.

That was more than likely the result of a 20 year old Fiat speedo :D

Yaris certainly won't handle well if you need to stop suddenly from that speed. A 1L won't do 160km/h though, I can say that from youthful, stupid experience. :o

An 899 Seicento has an official top speed of 87mph, with 39bhp and will indicate up to 110mph while flashing blinding bi-xenon retrofitted 3500k HID lamps (which were worth more than the car) at BMW X5's and Audis out of the way down the M1.

No comment on how I know this useless information....

    A 1.0 Yaris will do more than 160 km/h without a bother ;)

And a little more with the help of going downhill :pac:...

191 in a Yaris...even accounting for the speedo overreading, that is probably around 175-180 effective...I'd say a transcendental experience!

Many eons ago I somehow managed to launch a 1984 Renault 5 0.9 to about 170 on the speedometer; It was...fascinating.

As for road safety, regulation enforcement and so on, it would be very interesting if every country created a pool of actual experts - like retired racing drivers, advanced driving coaches, automotive and infrastructure engineers and so on; It is very apparent that the matter has become too complex and intricate to leave it to some random "lawmaker". Who probably has a chaffeur anyway...

Hopefully the driver was not allowed to drive home with them, probably was.

Usually they mention points, fine etc. So that strage, however Here it just says the driver "didn't know about them" They can't be fcuking serious. How could you not know your tyres are in sh1t? Also as a motorist the least someone could do is check bulbs, fluids and tyres. Like these checks literally take minutes, which will save lives.

@GardaTraffic Bald tyre detected on a jeep. No thread and very dangerous. The other rear tyre was just as worn.

Part-worn until you can see wire, only then can you call it bald :P

If it occasionally catches clowns like that then I've no problem with it. To be fair there is usually plenty of advanced signage before these checks.

120kmh speed limit and then you come around a corner and there's a checkpoint, potential for carnage.

Yes advanced signage would help but not sure they use these in all cases, most of the rural motorways have no electronic signage.

There tend not to be corners on motorways.

And have you seen these multi-agency checkpoints? I'd say they could be seen from space. It's not two hi-vis jackets standing out dodging traffic.

You also have the rubber neckers on the other side of the road looking over at the checkpoint.

And that's a reason not to do them?

Haven't heard of any incidents/accidents (sic) relating to this, in fairness - have you? Any I've seen have been done in the evening/at night, so will hardly lead to traffic build-up.

These motorway checks are carried out with immense safety.
A specialist company sets it all up.
Signage is a minimum 3km in advance.
Cones are places 2km in advance and there is a garda presence at the beginning to allow emergency vehicles access to the closed off lane.
Vehicles requiring additional checking are pulled to hard shoulder.
    Many vehicles are waved on.
ANPR is also used to identify certain vehicles.

In most of these operations they catch many non insurance drivers, drug dealers, farm diesel users, social welfare cheats and criminals.

Unless you are over three months out of tax, they don't bother with that if you are pleasant.

Thank god there are hero citizens on facebook groups saving these poor put upon motorists from the evil Gardai victimising them by warning them.

And the cost of that? As opposed to having the occasional checkpoint at a ramp intersection instead? Safer for all involved and doesn't bottle neck a motorway. Or how about some decent ANPR on the motorways which does away with the cost almost entirely and is working 24/7/365?

How anyone could champion a checkpoint on our limited motorways beggars belief.
