Mod: Thread closed as it's proposing the destruction buildings that would be close to many people's hearts.

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

Al Qaeda and IS are fond of blowing up and burning down Churches, temples, the mosques of those that just aren't quite Muslim enough for them, would you really want to be that kind of 'liberal' that makes you indistinguishable from those loons?

Not a religious fan either, but what you're proposing is what the nut jobs in Iraq and Syria do, burning down mosques and desecrating holy grounds of people of other faiths.

The next step is murdering the people that have those beliefs to finally rid the country of the particular faiths.

Is this the next step op? Do atheists hate people that are religious?

I don't think burning churches is the way to go, but you could confiscate them and turn them into something genuinely useful such as abortion clinics and/or brothels.

I'm catholic OP.....would you like to burn the church empty or with me in it?

If you don't like churches don't go to one.

I suppose that depends on whether you're actually suicidal, or merely trying to goad someone into being destructive.

I wonder if I started thread, should we burn down asylum centres, traveller sites, mosques it be closed pretty quick. Wonder why this was locked and opened again. Must have checked the rule book, Christianity okay to poll about burning down churches, etc. Other faiths or ethnic groups, protected species.

OP all your suggestion would do is divide Irish society.

Nah, burning something requires a bit of drive and initiative. Not something keyboard warriors are known for.

Tbh i find this thread quite disturbing. I've been lucky enough to grow up and live in a parish where the bond between community and church was always pretty strong. We were/are also blessed with priests who cared a lot for us and did a lot for the area. Alas, this is after hours. ....where its seemingly acceptable to mock those of faith.

    o Burn down churches

o Destroy priceless ancient monuments in Syria and Iraq (ISIS/Taliban)

    o Burn down synagogues

o Destroy the cross on Carrauntoohil with an angle grinder

o Convert Glendalough into an atheist interpretive centre, maybe?

o Use Newgrange as a pub, perhaps?

Why not just destroy history? Let's burn down libraries while we're at it.

People who destroy 'antiquity' tend to be more intolerant than the religions they despise.

Nah, we leave the church burning to loyalist paramilitaries in this country.
Taking the churches and their land and redistributing the vast wealth to people who deserve it, may be a better option.

I would never condone the burning of any religious building, be it a church, mosque or temple. Even thinking about it gives me chills.

I agree; I can't think why it would ever be necessary to dispose of any structure (sacred or secular) by burning.

We'll it leads on to mass executions, we've historic records, first they burn, then they round up the faiths, then execute.

Oh, tear it down, by all means. But burning? No.

I did like the band Burzum, but Varg Vikernes was and still is an intolerant pr1ck who tries to rewrite history to suit his white supremacist agenda. He's a loon who believes that white people are a separate species because they are directly descended from Neanderthals despite all the genetic and archaeological evidence to the contrary.

Destroying churches, mosques etc. and historic monuments can never be justified.

Them cûnts are cûnts, that's the way this atheist agenda works.

Ultimately, by burning, sacking, demolishing, or doing other mad things to churches, you wouldn't be punishing the Catholic church. You'd be punishing the religious people of a community. I'd be no fan of the Catholic church, or indeed the notion of organised religion in general, but I fully respect people's right to their faith and to their places of worship. The people who perpetrated and facilitated abuses over the years should be held to answer for their crimes, just as anyone else would. And anyone else who is part of a church should be left to carry on living their lives as they see fit, so long as they're doing no ham to anyone.

Burning churches like ISIS have, or like the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt where they encouraged attacks on Christians, could ban churches like in Saudi Arabia...
But decent people don't want societies like the ones I mentioned.
It shows a hate towards a certain group of people, it would not be acceptable for a Catholic to go burn down a building where a humanist/atheist uses for funerals.
It is our ancestors who paid for and built these buildings, and whether some like it or not, churches are places used in a crisis whether it is an individual crisis or a more general crisis.
In the Philippines churches were used to shelter and give people a roof over their head after typhoon Haiyan.
Churches are a part of the community, we should be very worried if people choose to turn on their own communities and want to burn down a religious building or any building used by the community.

There have been a few references to atheists, as though atheists are agreeing with this idea.Yet if you look through the thread there have been numerous cases where people have said they have no time for religion, but would be very much against destroying churches.

Well horse, this is one of the most stupid questions that I've ever heard. Stupid is as stupid does horse. "I'm angry so I'll do something really stupid.." My cows have more sense than that.
If you are angry horse, use your words and write a letter or do something constructive, not destructive.
