Boxing and boxing. Gymnastics and Diving a close second.

I never thought I'd say it, but that 50k walk yesterday was hypnotic - full of drama and pain and humanity and even madness.

Hockey for me. Not a sport I had much interest in before the games but I found both the men's and women's tournaments to be really entertaining. Good performance from the Irish team too!

    Badminton a close second.

I reckon you're up there alright. HeidiHeidi I think is the username is well in the lead.

    Damn fellow sailor :pac:
Is it done purely on quantity or is it like the diving with points for difficulty of post attempted and for quality of execution? That'd be a different story entirely I reckon ;)

    What about breath of knowledge?

Anyway to answer another post, my sport is sailing and for me that really delivered this Olympics

Also really enjoyed the rugby, athletics and gymnastics.

Actually I forgot that one, that was madness altogether.

I think most should agree, but wasn't the cycling brilliant. The whole lot for me.

Two top ten finishes by our male and female modern pentathletes. Surely this is a sport that we can identify as obvious medal targets for the next olympics. Invest a couple of hundred grand a year in it and we are looking at a couple of medals. Seems like a no-brainer.
And then they would probably get eliminated by getting a horse which refuses to jump.

God those races seem so long ago! The road races. Yeah they were epic! The drama! Not that bothered with the velodrome ones after the first few. Got a bit boring for me.

For those two I think it's a case of what do you need? Ok, there you go!

Natalya, currently gets a grant of 20k, most she can be awarded per year is 40k.

Arthur gets 12k, and again can go up to 40k

Ah yeah the two road races, heartstopping stuff.

Road or track? I prefer track but sadly did not get to watch a lot of it this time around for reasons that escape me.

Loved the road race and time trial. Part of it being Rio's lovely scenery. Velodrome was not as good as previous years.

Coyle must have only got the 20k this year, because in 2015 she was on the same 12k as O'Keeffe. The 40k is a podium grant, isn't it, so not sure top 10 at the Olympics qualifies for that, although I wouldn't in any way begrudge it to them if it did.

That's an easy one then. Give Natalya 40k for starters (two top 10 finishes at the Games) and probably Arthur too.

Possibly, I just went by what is posted on the Irish Sports Council

    http://www.irishsportscouncil.ie/High_Performance/Athletes/Athlete-List/Natalya_Coyle.html

Annalise Murphy is on the 40k grant prior to this so not sure it's podium only.

I think because Annalise won the European Championships either 2013 or 2014 which pushed her up to the 40k. You'd think top 10 at the Olympics would be worth a medal at a Euros, but to be honest I don't know if it works that way. Barr's fourth, you would imagine, should earn him the 40k, but then I think Athletics Ireland work their own grants system anyway.

Both. But a bit sad that the 1 k time trial on the track was dropped.

    Edit: dropped after 2004!

The individual bodies just administer the grants on behalf of the sports council.

Here's hoping that they get what they need, be it grants, or support.

Personally I would consider this one of the most successful Olympics we have ever had, with the exception of the boxers, I can't remember an Olympics where we finished top ten in so many sports, walking, the 400m hurdles, sailing, (think one of the 49ers finished top ten, not to mention Annalise), rowing, pentathlon.

Then you've the personal bests/best finishes in the likes of the badminton, triathlong and dressage as well.

I'm pretty sure this is the first Games where we've medalled in two sports which are not either athletics or boxing.

The boxing potential is always there and will come right .
Analises face when she realised her dream was very special
The O Donovans supreme physical efforts - agony then ecstacy
Thomas Barr realising he is now a world class athlete and the confidence he will get
    Pentathlon performances were a joy.
Rob Heffernan- the man is a colossus and gives everything.
A fantastic Olympics for sure .

    True!

Next summer looks quiet enough compared to this one but the World Athletics in London should be a real high point and no doubt Bolt, Farrah and all the others will be there.

Not likely. Our Irish Pentathlethes seem to be very good riders. Even on bad horses they will do well while their competitors will struggle and rely on luck. Both Pentathletes did really well in the riding. Throw a few bob at their swimming and fencing training and we are nearly guaranteed medals.

An from me, a huge thanks to everyone on this thread, it added to the whole Olympics for me, people giving generously of their time and knowledge across a range of sports, for me one of the best threads on boards in a long time :)

Yeah....I mean two weeks ago if a little bird dropped in and told you Ireland would win no boxing medals in Rio, you'd have been steeling yourself for imminent disaster. Funny the way things work out sometimes.

We should all chip in and get Russell Crowe over as coach for the next 4 years.

Natalya and Arthur don't have a fencing coach here, they fly to the UK every two weeks to get coaching, and he comes over on the alternative weeks!
