I know I'm a foreigner so I shouldn't really say anything.... But the cronyism and corruption in Irish sports and politics stuns me. I can't believe it's allowed to go on! Where are the journalists and the public outrage?

The guy that went after Armstrong, look at your backyard FFS!!

I don't think that NZ is perfect but Ireland is on par with RSA and Zimbabwe.

And sorry but Boards.ie worrying about being sued by these thieving, corrupt *****?!! Screw that. Stick 2 fingers up at them and say "Come get some!"

Ireland is 17th, NZ 4th, SA 61st, and Zimbabwe 150th on the Corruptions Perceptions Index ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_Perceptions_Index ) so we're not the best but equally we're far from the worst and far from the worst in Europe too.

Yeah "corruption" is the wrong word. Nepotism, cronyism, looking after my cousin or his mate etc. Ireland is shocking for it.

    Speaking of cheating

Also, only me and Yeah_right care...but bloody hell, the 19 year old Kiwi pole-vaulter equalling her PB and getting bronze. Tear in the eye.

Anyone know what station the Australia V All Blacks is on this morning at 11? I thought it was advertised as being on SS3 but doesn't seem to be now?

You didn't too bad yourself there, with 5th in the 5000m.

Apparently you're a LH prop in the winter, so I'm highly suspecting either industrial quantities of steroids pre-season or else amphetamines for breakfast, lunch and dinner once the 15-man code is out of the way.

One of the best fights of the year, best fight in the UFC since Lawler/MacDonald

Hopefully they don't go for it again immediately though, could do with them seperating for a little while. McGregor and Mayweather still seem convinced they're going to fight each other by all accounts! (not that I think they will or should)

McGregor did well to stay on his feet because he took some big hits from Diaz later on. Diaz just has a iron jaw, even getting knocked down he just doesn't daze at all, amazing resilience.

The marathon in the Olympics is so boring. It doesn't even seem that impressive after watching those nutters do the 50k walk the other day, or even compared to the triathlons.

You set the treadmill to 19-20kph and see how long you can run at that speed for!

It could well be but....Ireland is a special case. We had been ruled by the British for a long time and then when we got our independence, just under 100 years ago now, the powers that be put the Church in charge and there was still a massive hangover from the war of Independence. That hangover prob continued through to the late 60's or 70's, prob til we joined the EU, or even til the 90's tbh.

Once a people is governed by a foreign power there's always going to be a lot of cronyism/anti establishment.

I dunno how many UL graduates are on here but I read Ed Walsh's book recently, he was in charge of setting up the college in the 60's, and it's really interesting to read his views of Ireland at the time. His interactions with official Ireland are frankly appalling and a lot of official Ireland at the time is still based on anti British ideology.

So as a country we're still only starting to think for the better of the country nowadays, though with the massive populism involved in the media and govt maybe we're not even doing that yet.

You're absolutely right. I don't think it's an inherent Irish genetic trait, it's a lot to do with history. Ireland, though, should seriously improve its laws for "white collar" crime...back in the day you were ripping off the British government, so no-one really cared, but that's no longer the case.

I do think the IRFU will want to make absolutely sure there is not a hint of such carry-on associated with their RWC bid. They are helped by the fact that SA is hardly a beacon of purity in this regard.

I can honestly say that there is no way a figure such as the currently-in-jail IOC chief would have survived 25 years in NZ. Just wouldn't be tolerated.

in ireland we have a built in mindset of "screw the system"... whether thats tax avoidance, not complying with statutory licenses or even something as simple as robbing pens from the office....

when we meet the instruction to comply with a regulation our very first question is "whats the likelyhood of getting caught"?
we are absolutely crap at citizenship.... we begrudge people who seem to have more than us (regardless of how hard they worked for it) and we begrudge those in need as being lazy leeches on the tax payer (while at the same time doing everything possible to renege on our own owed taxes)

this permeates into political life where feathering your bed is the name of the game. Those who spend their life in politics or sitting on boards of management of charities, sports bodies or councils are invariably corrupt as that is the resultant of the power that goes with those positions... that corruption may be conscious or subconscious, and it may be explicit or implicit, but it is inevitable.

this should be the widely held view of anyone in a position of power for a long period of time.
we've seen it sport now with Hickey. We all have our suspicions about DELETED. We've seen it at provincial level with DELETED. We've seen the planning tribunals, the beef tribunal, the morris tribunal, moriarity tribunal etc.....

the common thread among all of these embarrassments was cronyism and people in positions of power for long periods

Just reading there about how families of Irish Olympians had to buy their tickets for events in Rio from other countries. And this was happening as far back as January/February. The Pro10 guys that were supposed to be the official ticket sellers didn't even have an online sales facility and when people tried to phone them direct they couldn't get through to anyone. One man even tried going to the address listed on their site and apparently there's no office there.

It sounds like this whole scandal could have been either avoided or discovered a lot earlier if anyone had been paying attention. Or maybe it was.

This was happening in 2012 as well, the media were notified and they didn't care.

Unfortunately noone cared about this until it became an international story.

Yeah, I saw something the other day about the previous ticket sellers not being permitted by the IOC this year. Think it was at the press conference that was happening just after Hickey was arrested but before he was charged. Someone was asking something about Pro10 being a a get around for these other people. Didn't get an answer from the IOC guy about it though.

That is the problem in Ireland, or one of them, generally we don't care until it's a big scandal and then we're outraged. The papers are full of stories the last few days basically saying that none of what's happened or the people involved would come as a surprise to anyone and yet we've happily left these people in charge of various organisations for years, decades even.

So, without anyone going into anything that could get Boards sued, do we actually know where John Dellaney is?
