Is this nectar of the gods new in Tesco? I used to buy something very similar when in Poland from a company called Tymbark. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get it in years as it must have been discontinued. Tesco's tastes almost identical and is delicious.

I'm pretty sure my local Tesco stocks Tymbark cherry juice in the Polish foods section.

It's probably the cherry and apple variant.

Has anyone got a recommendation for a small rice cooker? My Tefal does a great job once you have at least three decent sized servings in it, but there's only two of us in the house and much as rice is cheap it feels wrong throwing that volume out.

    Freeze the leftover rice.
Very handy to have portions of rice to just pop in the microwave.

I've been using this microwave rice cooker for years and it's perfect for 2 people.

Sooo....apples, apples on trees. When do you pick those bad boys? There's an old orchard where I work and, not that I would go scrumping from my employers, theoretically apples could become pies. Also, do I need to, like, climb up said tree? I remember trying to surreptitiously shake one towards the very end of apple o'clock last year and the tree basically laughed at me.

You pick them when they're ripe :)

Seriously, if it's an old orchard it'll likely have a selection of varieties which will ripen at different times, some of which will need eating now and some of which will be good for storing. Just pick an apple and try a slice. Watch out for wasps and maggots.

You can gather windfalls, but they'll likely be bruised, so best picked from the tree. Borrow the caretaker's stepladder.

I wonder if you could put something in the cooker to take up space, like a jam jar. I am guess it works better if filled to a certain level, so the jar would take up volume at the bottom. Might need to be full of coins or something to stop it floating.

I just cook rice in the microwave with the absorption method. Rinse rice, add 1 volume rice to 1.5-2 volumes of water, heat until boiling and reduce to defrost for 10mins.

You can get grabbers for picking stuff up off the ground

    I like these ideas

    That's genius. :D

You've reminded me to order my jars so I can make blackberry jam. I did a bit of preserving last year and really enjoyed it plus my family and friends were all delighted to get some of the jars so this year I'll do more of it.

Now that GBBO is back, it has reminded me of how I want ALL the Smeg products. Why are they so expensive? :(

John Lewis have a pink Smeg range that i desperately want but it's something like £2000!

Does anyone else here follow the BBQ/Grilling thread just for the sheer drool factor?

Kebab wraps - I've tried to make them myself, but have always failed. Closest I've found has been the Dunnes wraps below, but they are out of stock.

Any suggestions as to alternatives? Of course, I have a dinner party tonight and would like something nicer than the normal pitta bread (and as close to the lebanese style of pittas as possible). Thanks!

^ Our local supermarket JC's in Swords, Co. Dublin sell Lebanese wraps just like those.

I really have to get out to JCs one of these days. It sounds like Stuff You Wished You Could Find Mecca.

I feel like I've travelled back in time anytime I go to JC's :D

It's old-fashioned and cluttered but they seem to have everything.

    Then Dunnes started.

Made a batch of crap popcorn, lots of semi popped kernels with hard bits attached so harder to sort them from fully unpopped ones.

I think this was due to the saucepan being too hot, it was on before I found my oil and was very hot. I think they hit the pan and heat unevenly inside and so do get hot enough to pop -but not a full even pop.

I remember years ago the pack used to say to heat on a low heat swirling around and the moment you hear a single pop take it off the heat and swirl and leave for a minute. I guess this is to heat evenly and so they will all pop at quite similar times and so less chance of burning.

In a search to find advice I found that some freaks prefer the semi popped ones, and there are guides on how to do it. A company even sells them, called "half pops".

If I was a global dictator I would use this product to weed out the "unsuitables"

When I'm home-poppin I always use a cast iron pot to pop my corn, (though I grew up in a family that used a pressure cooker with the rubber ring removed to pop their corn - probably not the best thing to do, in retrospect). I add the oil, the corn and rotate to coat each kernel (still unheated) then heat until there's a steady flow of pops. Off heat for 1 minute then heat again until the popping has almost stopped. I rarely end up with a load of unpopped bits :).

Made the stupid mistake of going for my weekly grocery shop while feeling a bit peckish and then ringing himself while I was doing it too and getting distracted. Didn't realise half the stuff I was picking up until she asked for payment at the til and I realised I'd spent about €50 more than usual :o I must have just been wandering up and down the same aisles!

On the plus side it was all relatively healthy stuff. Going to try a happy pear recipe for beetroot salad and I finally found the raw beetroot to do it properly :)

Now I have to figure out what to do with the three deodorants :D

I'm back in Ireland and finding it impossible to remember that I'm no longer -0800 GMT. I'm having a pint and my head is screaming "it's only 9am! What are you doing?!".

Nothing wrong with a pint at 9am. If its in the airport. And you don't fly five times a week. :pac:
