I don't agree that the media should be ignoring him.

This man put himself forward as a TD and should be big and bold enough to defend his beliefs.

Hiding alcoholic uncle Walter in case he says something inappropriate in front of the neighbors is not the answer.

Sensationalising it is wrong. But not calling him out on his claims is so much worse.

Isn't there a Healy-Rae niece working her way up the ranks?

I think I read on here that she's a councillor, and will be tipped to win a Cork seat in the next GE.

A man is elected who believes that an old book is superior to modern science and quotes an absurd fantasy from said book as evidence. If this isn't embarassing then I don't know what is.

Were you embarrassed when our financil institutions and various politicians and bankers in Europe ruined hundreds of families through greed and corruption? Are you embarrassed when so many 'charity' executives are found to be lining their pockets again through greed? Are you embarrassed when all of our politicians from the so called left/socialists to the the very right wing claim thousands upon thousands in unvouched expenses every year?

What has any on that got to do with climate change?

I don't blame the Healy Rae's. I blame the people that walked into the polling booth and decided "yes, this is who I want representing us".

What's so outrageous about their policy relating to car tax? We're far too obsessed with cars in this country. I see no harm in implementing measures to cut down on unnecessary numbers of unnecessarily powerful cars. You don't need a 2 litre BMW if all you're doing is driving a mile or 2 in Dublin every day.
They brought in a tax system that punished petrol cars and massively reduced tax costs of diesel, based purely off CO2. This resulted in a massive swing towards diesel in this country, and while they do emit less CO2, the stuff they pump out instead is actually poisonous - nitrogen dioxide and the like. Diesel is far more polluting than petrol, so for a "green" party to bring this system in is a bit outrageous. Everyone has 2 litre BMWs now, far more than pre-2008. They're all diesel.

They are smart. The play the media and public like fiddles. Seems to be working a charm so far. I don't agree with his climate change comments btw, just that anybody who thinks they don't know exactly what they are doing is misreading the situation. Danny HR is getting himself big media headlines and playing to the local gallery to boot. Who knows, he may even believe what he spouts is nonsense, but in the theatre of politics that hardly matters.

No, this was a pan-global phenomenon. Nobody voted for it either.
Are you embarrassed when so many 'charity' executives are found to be lining their pockets again through greed?

No. I was disgusted. These charity heads aren't democratically elected.
Are you embarrassed when all of our politicians from the so called left/socialists to the the very right wing claim thousands upon thousands in unvouched expenses every year?

Both of my previous points apply here.

    Nothing.
I was refering to people getting embarrassed about what a politician says.

    This +1000.

They play the country bumpkin shtick and no matter how ridiculous this looks to the rest of the country, the locals don't care, because they get 'looked after' and it's their boys sticking it up to the Dubs and urban Ireland.

Those lads are as cute as sh1thouse rats. They will get voted in time and time again so long as they come up with goodies for their fans/voters.

    No they don't.
The politicians(every single one of the 160 or whatever) who pocket thousands every year without having to furnish a receipt are elected just like healy rae. so why would an interview with him embarrass you and the greed of all of them not?

Because the greed of politicians isn't an Irish thing, it's global. It's also nothing new. We've become normalised to it. However, a politician ignoring scientific facts for an old book written thousands of years ago is something not even Donald Trump would do. Healy-Rae is a moron and I've no idea why the people of Kerry would vote for him.

The man is a national embarrassment. How he got elected will forever be beyond me.

If you ask me, The Dáil is full of national embarrassments. It's one of the consistent certainties of the Irish electoral process.

You really don't get it, do you?

He's their man, voted in by them to root for what they want. And it seems he's quite good at that.

I genuinely can't think of someone as stupid as Danny Healy-Rae though. Anyone else would have the cop on to take a handout from big oil and allude to some sort of research disputing climate change.

If that's what they want then I have to conclude that they're morons if this is the sort of representative they want.

I would imagine one reason they might vote for him is because he gets things done for them. I think they would regard that as a reason to vote for him rather than what his religious beliefs or knowlege of climate change is. I'll put it this way would you prefer to have him fighting your corner or have someone like Shane Ross dithering and doddering for you?

So it's the old "He fixed the roads" nonsense. I would like my representative to at least be professional. I doubt he was the only person who could get things done either.

In their eyes the HR clan can do no wrong.

Actually he has a point, we shouldn't be embarrassed by the Healy-Reas. Their local politics has diverted funds from efficient government - projects that improve peoples lives and live standards and transferred it to inefficient projects so that local politicians can buy votes.

We shouldn't be embarrassed, we should be furious.

Anyone who thinks doing a few favours for the local community is the job of a national politician should have their vote taken off them. Climate change is a far bigger priority for a national politician than getting a few back roads fixed.

I don't give a flying fuck what he does for the people of Kerry. He's a representative of Dail Eireann, not Dail Kerry.

Getting re-elected is the biggest priority for a national politician. Very few people give a fiddlers about climate change

Yeah yeah, and to answer the question who would you pick Healy rae or Ross?

You said you don't believe in man made climate change in post #16
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=100715698&postcount=16

Without trying to split hairs and all that can you provide evidence that the present rapid change in Earth's climate is not the cause of human activity despite all of the evidence to the contrary?
Man made ;) What percentage of climate change are we responsible for?

Yeah, you'd have to be some kind of stupid to vote for a politician dedicated to giving you what you want as opposed to voting for a politician that gives you what Angela Merkel wants.....

Ross of course. Unless he becomes more of a moron than Danny which I am not sure is possible.

Do you seriously think that healy rae or the whole 160 TD's we have can have any significant impact ob climate change? We could shut down this little island for a year and it wouldn't have as much impact on the climate as 1 days production in China or India would have in one week!

Just keep voting for the cute hoors that gave away our gas reserves to Shell Corp for a bag of magic beans.

The same cute hoors that now want to do the same with our water.

Them cute hoors got the country's best interests at heart.

He's a very wealthy man, from a very wealthy family who go to be just that by telling the people who can directly hire or fire him, what they want to hear.

Rural Kerry has about as much in common with Dublin as, Dublin does with fúcking Neptune. You can laugh and scoff and the simple, uneducated peasants all you like, but they are the ones who will vote this shower in or out, they are the healy raes bosses - not you or I. Michael knows this well and handles it well.

I think he's a prize clown, but I certainly don't think he's stupid - he's earning a lot more money than I am and doing a lot less work for it.
