It's almost as if they gave him the second round to try and give some credibility to the scoring
3 0 in the first round was correct. but in favour of the wrong boxer
The ref in the second round also helped him out a bit

You're spot on - it's not a popular stance but Taylor was lucky enough to get that gold, especially given the nationality of her opponent.

Today was a shambles, Conlan was actually our best hope for gold, not Taylor, and he was robbed in full view of us all.

That much was obvious, try and make it look as if the fight is not fixed.

Seaton and McGovern win race 12 to qualify for their medal race in 8th place. Unfortunately they now cannot mathematically win a medal, a 20th (last) place in Race 11 finished off their hopes.

No doubt Pat Hickey will organise an inquiry into these corruption allegations.

Aw...great work from them coming back from that - must be frustrating that they now can't medal, but sounds like a good overall performance and a chance to move nearer the top

Good to see the Brazilian women keeping up tradition of mens teams with exotically named players. To Rivelinho, Ronaldinho, Jarzinho, Zico we can add .... Barbara :D

Sweden through to the women's football final beating Brazil 4-3 on pens. Hope Solo won't be too amused

You could hear a pin drop there when Sweden won!

Fair play to them, beating Brazil in the Maracana is an achievement. Into the final now.

    From http://www.rte.ie/sport/olympics/2016/0816/809622-live-rio-olympics-day-11/
It's been another emotionally bruising day for the Irish. Expect the inquest into Michael Conlan's defeat to roll on for a long, long time... It was the climax of a dreadful Games for the boxers, who have endured a mixture of bad luck, poor decisions and out-of-ring controversy to make this a disastrous Olympics. There's only one tonic to all that doom and gloom - the unlikely tale of the Yorkshireman diving for Ireland at the Olympics! Ollie Dingley is up at 10pm...

I know they've already celebrated Annalise Murphy's medal, but it still seems bizarre to ignore it in the above

What do you make of these comments by Eamon Coghlan? Sonia has had similar things to say about Irish athletes being too happy with being Olympians and not aspiring to better. I think this is an incredibly valid point, it's as if Athletics Ireland are trying to put a spin on things no matter what. Let Thomas Barr and the others compete first and then start assessing our performances. I guess it's all about validating funding.

Says Mr 4th. What did he ever do at an Olympics.

The lad would eat himself and he looks like Chocolate.
That's unfair and rude, and not worthy of your usual incisive thought.

Thankfully someone remembered about it and decided to cover the medal ceremony. On RTE2 now

Coghlan is right. He is also lucky that the East Africans hadn't yet emerged during his heyday. If he was around now he'd be nowhere over 5000. Would be competitive over 1500 though.

Depends on how you define success.... in the last 60 years at the Olympics Irish athletes have won 2 medals on the track - Ronnie Delaney in 56 and Sonia in 2000

If you widen it to longer events you include John Treacy in 84 and Rob Heffernan in 2012

So thats medals in 56, 84, 00, 12 ...what makes anyone think we'll win anything in this Olympics? Or any one in the next few years barring the emergence of a once in a generation athlete from somewhere?

Look the guy never did anything in the olympics.

The modern athlete faces far more competition and a far more competitive field including systematic drug cheating.

I think they have had great games for clean athletes.

I also do think the guy is full of himself, so much so, he went for a seat in the dail and hasn't a clue about politics. Then gets a seat in the Seanad and is totally clueless in that.

So he isn't even mr 4th - he was 5th in the By Election.

    Idiotic post.

Also he was beaten by a self confessed drunk cheat in 1980.

I'd be delighted if any of our Track and Field athletes got anywhere near fourth

You seem to have a problem with the man, rather than his statement.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a happier Irish medalist being interviewed than Annalise on the RTE News just there after receiving her medal.....she's over the moon :)

And a fairly clear indication that she'll go for gold in 2020 I thought. How is the wind in Tokyo bay normally :)

Fair play with her if she does.

It seems a fairly fickle sport to put 4 years into after already getting a silver,

It really is in the wind and can fall apart with the simplest of things.

She has done enough for me.

I know it is a sport of love - but her regime sounded hard core.

All that is true and, to be fair, that was merely my interpretation. She said nothing definite at all. Maybe when she reflects on this, she might think there was possibly a gold for the taking, I mean only possibly, and there's still even MORE unfinished business with the sport. Being selfish I'd like to think so, but it's her life and her decision to make. Wouldn't blame her whatever route she decides to take.
