Never underestimate how stupid people are. I know somebody who rocked 3 generations of top end dual Nvidia cards, having never enabled SLI.

    Oh wow, thats brilliant.

That... That might just take the biscuit for Most Retarded PC Gamer Thing, I think.

God, that's horrific. A GTX295, GTX590 or GTX690 without Sli enabled...basically an overclocked GTX 270/570/670 for double the price. Madness, and he obviously never even twigged that he was missing out! Or maybe something dropped on build #3...

Reminds me of all those people buying high Hz monitors and then leaving it set to 60Hz in the settings for lord knows how long.

Hd7970, still a decent card, but I think the asking price is a bit high seeing as it isn't working! Gave out some abuse to the guys who questioned it on the ad!

Googled it, lots of people with that issue on that card. Only solution is a RMA.

    selling a dead card :D

Try throwing it in the oven?

Edit: Oh not yours; never mind.

...clearly they were all just not clever enough to figure it out!

I honestly wonder at times what people are trying to do on adverts.
It seems there are as many deluded sellers as there are buyers. That card is worth nothing and when this is pointed out to him all he can do is insult them. lol

I have sold and bought stuff from adverts and its fairly simple. If the item is priced correctly it will sell and sell quickly too.

Hi folks. I have a HTPC I'm thinking of selling. Just wondering what you guys think she might be worth. Its a mini iTX build using a MSI H97I AC board with wifi and bluetooth integrated in a Silverstone Raven Z01 case. It has a 64GB SSD and a 640GB HDD. CPU is a G3260 and I'm using integrated graphics on it but the case is such that a full size GPU will fit in it. 8GB 1600mhz ram and a Zalman CNPS8900 low profile cooler on the CPU. Windows 10 Pro on it. Its about 2 years old. Operates via a remote control or wireless keyboard.

I would say that will be a tough sale. I had a G3258 with 8GB ram, 2TB hard drive and GT740 in a HTPC mini-ITX case and I found it impossible to shift it even at the €250 mark.

Ah right. That's bad news. I built it with an i5 4440 originally but I moved that to another pc.

After moving into a 3 storey house and need to get internet upstairs. Are those TP-Link Powerlines anygood?
Really don't want to have to buy a stupidly long Ethernet cable and run it all the way up.

They are pretty good alright. You can even get them with a wifi extender built in, you plug your pc into it and you have boosted wi fi for your phone and tablet and the likes.

My new CPU, motherboard and RAM for my new build arrived yesterday. My new SSD is due next week but I only realised yesterday I won't be able to put it all together for another two weeks until I get back to my parents house in to get the power supply and graphics card out of my old PC.

I use them for about two years now. Got the one with wireless extension too. Was very handy in old house
Modem was downstairs and pc, ps4, xbox one in my room. So had pc connected with Ethernet cable with TP yolk amd consoles on wireless on TP.
Don't expect full speeds, but it's way damn better then just weak wireless signal.

They're pretty good, yeah. Depends on the house and what the wiring's like, but they're usually much more reliable than WiFi.

That said, I had the option of running homeplugs in my new place. Bought a 20M Cat6 cable instead.

Does the speed rating on the homeplugs have any basis in reality? Has anyone ever maxed the speed out?

I was looking at these on argos for €45 which is considerably cheaper than the equivalent on amazon. Is there any good reason no to go for these ones?

Never did a test for max network speed, but they are far less laggy than wi-fi.

Not sure if anyone has maxed it out but the speed does make a difference between say 200mbps and those 1200mbps ones. I noticed a big increase in download speed between them on the same Virgin media connection.

I haven't done much testing past the 500 version but usual rule of thumb is 25% of rated speed.

There are a few generations out now:
Gen 1 - Up to 100 Phys (not real world)
    Gen 2 - Up to 200/500 Phys
    Gen 3 - 600 Up

The difference between a 200 and a 500 may often be very meagre but going from a 500 to a 600 may see a huge improvement.

Those netgears dont seem like a bad buy. TP Link have been top dog in the HP space for a while but I dont hold any grudges against Netgear like some like to do. The really important factor is the internal wiring of your house. In a noisy house you might find a 100Mb and a 1200Mb both do 20Mb. Unfortunately theres no easy way to test your mains for data so its just a case of pray your sparky did things well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Yeah, the wiring is the big one. I had two sets of homeplugs and I was never able to get more than about a 20-25mb out of them, now have a 50ft cable now tacked along the skirting and frames for the full 360mb.

To be honest I'm not massively fussed about speed for the upstairs as it's just going to be for my work Mac as Ive started up with Apple working from home.

Honestly the house layout is a bit annoying. The only router is right at the front of the house and I don't want to run a stupidly long Ethernet cable that far.

Cheers for all the tips though. I'll probably try it out.

If your doing tech support from home using VOIP, run a cable.

Is the TP link not essentially cable though?

    Nope.

Ethernet is designed for and run solely to transmit data. As such it rarely fails. Homeplugs are a kludge.

For example, turn on your hoover, homeplugs die, turn off hoover, back. Grand for your youtube signal but not so great if that kills your calls to customers.
