I've managed to sprain a muscle in my back, so I'm out of the running for the next week. God, not looking forward to next weekend's LSR with a week's gap preceding it! Least I've booked my spot for the marathon though, only heard about them closing the entry the other day, I just happened to book in by pure chance in July. So at least there's that.

Hi Fbjm, how did you register? When I entered I only got an e-ticket, saying that "Race numbers (race pack) will be available for collection at the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon EXPO in the Main Hall of the R.D.S on Friday 28th October from 12pm-7pm or Saturday 29th October from 9am-7pm."
...and to sign and bring this ticket with me for the registration. I took it that registration happens when I go to collect my race pack... did I misunderstand something?

No I just meant I'd booked my place and received my race number! No worries :)

Really enjoyed the meet-up run this morning, lovely to meet everyone and put faces to names, a lovely sunny morning and we spotted TFGR too :)

It was really nice to meet everyone and the chat made the miles fly by . Thanks to yourself and Nop for organising and pacing this morning I really enjoyed it.

Yeah, really enjoyed it this morning, the miles seemed to fly by. It was great to meet everyone, hopefully see you next week at the FD 10m.

Thank you nop98 and firedance for organising this morning's LSR meet up and pacing duties :) Great to meet everyone and definitely the miles/kms seemed to fly by. Thank you Wubble Wubble for pacing our 2nd lap :D:D

Lots of good running going on here at the moment. I did 16 miles this morning. I only did a 12 mile LSR last weekend as I had been sick leading up to it. I'm back on track again now.

Got a new pair of Mizuno Wave inspire 12s during the week. Very happy with them. I wear orthotics and have always used neutral runners. The guy in the shop (who wears orthotics himself and is a very competitive runner) recommend them. My old pair were well worn out, I should have changed them 200 miles ago.

I won't make the Frank Duffy next week so I think I'll do a 10 mile time trial to see where I'm at. Not the same as a race but I have a nice 5 mile loop close to me I can use.

Well I struggled with 19Kms this morning - had planned for 25Kms but the knees had other ideas - ended up walking a few times too so for me it was a bad run
Plan to take it easy enough this week and maybe a trip to the physio to see if he can help but I know he is going to say rest

First run back today after hurting my calf. Got 8 miles in on grass. 13 loops so a bit monotonous, still it's great to get back

Saw the Frank Duffy road closure posters in the park this morning and was convinced the date must be wrong on them. It's next weekend? Oops.

So following P&D 55 plan. Next Saturday I should be doing my first 20 miler but will be running in a local 10k. 10ks don't come along too often and we have a bit of history so will be racing it, yet again trying to break 40 minutes.

So what would be the best option (bar sticking to the plan and running 20 miles easy!!)

    1. 2 Mile warm-up, 10k race, long run after to get me to 16-17 miles total.
    2. 10k race on Saturday, 17-18 miles on Sunday.
    3. Move the 20 miles to Wednesday and race away on Saturday.

I'm leaning towards option 1 as it means least deviation from the normal routine.

Ditto to all.. Enjoyed chatting and meeting everyone. The 2nd group pace was great for chatting whole way around so all worked out fantastic. Thanks to all for organizing and for coming along!

Hope we can all do it again soon.

+1 - very nice to see some very solid running. I hope the second loop was enjoyable as the first - and The Black Oil, I hope you found your way back for the 12M. Let's do it again sometime in September.

Special word of thanks to Firedance and Bungy Girl for coming out for some mileage, too - much appreciated.
Looking fabulous out there, guys! I was hoping I'd run into you :D Highlight of my run!

Looking good there TFGR, some solid mileage being clocked up. Nice to see you!

Hi tipping - hope ye don't mind me jumping in! - your post struck a chord, it reminded me of my marathon-clubmates. Each year, during marathon training, they do the Lakes 10k on a Saturday and follow it up with a 16 mile run on the Sunday.

If it was a 10 mile race or a HM you could get away with doing a long warm up, race the 10 miles or HM and do a couple of miles to finish off but trust me, you won't feel like doing any more than 3-4 miles after racing 10k, especially if it's a serious sub 40 attempt!

Good luck with whatever you do the 10k Sat/16 miles Sun :D

Option 1. sounds like a recipe for an injury or exhaustion, an all out 10k is a decent enough workout on its own.

Option 2. is along the lines of what's in the training plans in P&D Advanced Marathoning - an all-out tune-up race with a long run the next day. Note the name of the book though: "Advanced Marathoning" :)

Option 3. means you probably wouldn't be recovered sufficiently for your long run the following weekend.

Of the options you presented, I'd go for number 2.

    However I'd go with:
Option 4. Do the race instead of an LSR. Recover fully from the race with some easy running for a few days afterwards. Do a long run next weekend as normal.

(This is exactly what I did a few weeks ago after the Fingal 10k).

Sound advice as always. Gotta get working on the brownie points now for the the week to get away with that though.

Fair point too, something else to think about.

Settling towards option 4, race the 10k, then either do the lsr on Sunday if legs are up to it and happy wife/kids, else skip the lsr and recover. All assuming I don't get the keys to the new house next week and have to move of course😀

D'oh, didn't see dubgal's reply, I think we were writing at the same time :)

The bonus part of my plan is that a long run the day after epic post-10k-PB beers is no fun :pac: :D

May be pushing it timewise as I've a bit of a drive to the wedding, but if I miss the ceremony I miss the ceremony. I am a terrible friend!

Into uncharted waters for me going over the 100km mark in a week.

Thu 11/8 - 4 easy miles @8:45 approx. Much the same as Tuesday, except I ran the loop clockwise for a change.

Fri 12/8 - Rest. I did however nip out to a Lidl near work at lunchtime to pick up a gel pack. No foam rollers though.

Sat 13/8 - 14 mile LSR - Boards Meet, Phoenix Park

I wasn't really sure how this would go. I had no idea what any of the other novices looked like, and AFAIK it was the same all round for those who could make it to PP. I arrived earlyish at the designated meeting point, and having finished putting on my suncream, got out of the car to see two guys and a girl along the grass verge. Each was standing beside their respective cars looking anxious, as if worried that their prospective dates might not show up :)

I'm not sure if I said the exact code as given by FD, but I got a favourable response from the aforementioned girl, who turned out to be aceygray; the lads being The Black Oil and kin9pin. Shortly afterwards a tall guy in a cap got out of his car across the road, and his female sidekick walked up to meet him; of course they were nop98 and Firedance.

Having gone through the intros after some more novices (The Muppet, paddydriver, FITZA) arrived, it was time for us to split off into our two groups. I was with the 10 minute group, led by nop98, along with Bungy Girl, fresh from her latest track exploits. aceygray, kin9pin and FITZA completed our group on the opening stint. Our lap largely covered the first 6 miles of the FD 10 Mile, with a trip in and out of the Furry Glen included. The miles flew past, with everyone contributing to the chat, and we also encountered TFGR near the Cabra Gate.

Having got through the first 7 mile loop easily, nop98 and BG left us, as we took a very short break before the remaining four of us continued on the second loop. I found the pace and the mileage no problem at all, and having good company made it much easier anyway. 14 miles in the bag at the end of it, and of course it was great to put some faces and real names to Boards names. Lovely to meet you all, and thanks to nop98 and Firedance for organising. FWIW, I think I deserved the marshmallow hot chocolate and Krispie cake in Farmleigh afterwards :D

    Sun 14/8 - 3 miles @8:57 average.

An easy two laps of the local parkrun course, with the third mile consisting of running from and to the house.

34 miles for the week; it feels great to be back on track after last week's LSR cancellation, especially with the 10 mile looming large on the horizon.
    11 weeks to go!

Into uncharted waters for me going over the 100km mark in a week.

    Monday easy run 14.1km @ 4.41/km
Tuesday workout 20.2km total with  6km easy, 12.5km tempo slightly faster than PMP, The rest was warm down. Overall average 4.26/km Followed by 20 minutes stretching.
Wednesday easy run 13.2km @ 4.43/km with 30 minutes core work.
    Thursday easy run 13km @ 4.45/km
Friday workout 20.4km total with warm Up, 5x 2km @HMP with 1km float around 40 seconds slower. The rest warm down. Followed by 20 minutes stretching again.
    Saturday recovery run 4.5km
Sunday 23.8km long run  @ 4.56/km with another 20 minutes stretching after it.

I really enjoyed the week but I found Fridays session in winter like conditions and Sunday hard going at times. Total of 109.6km this week.

    Weekly Update:

    Mon: Rest
    Tue: 6.5k (4m) easy.
Wed: 11.4k (7m) with 8k PMP. I like these, they break up the monotony of running so slowly all the time!
    Thu: Rest
    Fri: 6.4k (4m) easy.
Sat: Exorcised my demons from last week's LSR with 26km (16.1m).
    Sun: 5.1k (3.2m) recovery.

55.6k (34.5m) for the week and a very satisfied novice over here.

    To Pomplamousse and Donosti goers!!
    (Memories for you Adrian!)
I post it here -a looong one because nop said others are going to Sanse.

San Sebastian = Sanse = Donosti = Donostia

San Sebastian or Donostia as we say in basque is a smallish town.

You can do anything walking unless accomodation is far. The main areas are the centre where the La Concha beach is. You can visit cathedral area. Most streets are pedestrian or almost. At the end of the beach to the right is the Town hall and the Old Part (Parte Vieja). The main road is Boulevard... people busking...
This is where most people go for pintxos and drinks.
From the Parte vieja you can go to the left to the Harbour.. Aquarium.. and walk around Urgull and you will end up on the other side of the Old Part to the Urumea river and crossing the bridge you get to Gros, where the Zurriola beach is (surfers beach).
You should walk up Urgull mountain. My brother in law suggested I should run it if I wanted hills. Well.. that was a love/hate moment ;0)))
Gros is pintxos zone too. End of Zurriola you have Ulia mountain. This is the mountain Adrian went around to go to Pasaia San Pedro.
Back to La Concha beach to the left but the walk way.. stunning views... end of the beach there is Ondarreta beach and Igueldo mountain. You should walk to the very end and see the sculptures.
A bit before the tenis club (I think) there is the wooden funicular that brings you to the top of Igueldo mountain where there is a hotel and the oldest amusement park and problably tiniest.

For food: anywhere.. I usually have pintxos but you can have the daily menu for a tenner in the old park mostly
Centre: La Espiga and Bide Bide
Old Park: Gandarias (block of steak) Tamboril, La cuchara de San Telmo (foie)
    Gross: la Donostiarra (prawns).
I don't know much of Gros as it really developed in the last 20 or 25 years. I am a 'pija' (posh) from the Centre ;0)))
But anyplace is good, those are my favorites.

Where to do a long run...
Same as Adrian but I would add the following: when you get to the river follow it. With the sea on your back on the right hand side of the river... all the way up there us a bend towards the left, go up and you will see a bridge that brings you to a park... enjoy the hills there.. small but steep and you can get out the same entrace and go your way back OR come out by the main entrance.. you have a underground walk on the left that brings you to the river again and go right. All the way to the sea and you are in Gros. Run by the beach and finish the same route Adrian told you. That will be like 10 miles...

    Where else to go

Adrian's walk to Pasaia S Pedro is very nice.. if you walk into the village, fishermen village, you can cross by boat to Pasai San Juan and back. Restaurants are very good there. S Juan is one of the best rowing villages too.

Another place you must go is Hondarribia. You take a bus from Plaza Guipuzcoa in SanSebastian to Hondarribia. Takes an hour or so and I think it is every 12 mins.. and visit the place. Another fishermen place. You should go up to the Old Part too. Very hilly but houses are beautiful. The center of village is very nice too and you can walk to the harbour too. There is a nice beach too. If you want there is a boat from El Espigon (walk by the river) to Hendaye in France.
Hondarribi is another great rowing place.

And please please ask anything you want to know. I will try to help you. Nop...so shall we do the half then when others do the marathon?

Another UNREAL race is beg of Nov Behobia (just in the border with France) all the way to San Sebastian. Hills are shocking but the support is fantastic. 20k full of cheering except a k of dual carridge way.

    Right I stop now ;0)))

Only got out twice this week. Left hand side of my left ankle seems to be at me after I run. Not sure if this is down to over training or problem with my runner although I'm guessing it would be on the right foot too if it was the runners.

Looking at the stats, think it might be over training.
    May - 65m
    June - 51m
    July- 108m
    August so far - 66m

    This week
Wednesday - 7m @ 8:48 - I don't bother with warm up or cool down, Although took the first one handy @ 9:34

    Saturday - 14m @ 9:57

    Boards Plan Week 7

    Total Miles 35.6
    Time 5 hrs 16 minutes.

    Tuesday 6.1 miles @ 08:40 per mile

Thursday 7.4 miles @ 7:55 per mile....had a nice fast run on Thursday; quicker than I should have but felt the need to get some frustration out after work! All ran in the Phoenix Park....great to have it on the door step.

Friday 4 miles @ 08:50 per mile nice easy one after work.

Saturday 15 miles LSR @ 09:25 per mile got back to the car at 14.7 miles....running OCD made me hit 15! Felt in the legs after Thursday and Friday that was just the way things panned out this week. Sorry to have missed the meet up.

Sunday 3 miles recovery @ 09:11 pretty tired after staying up until 03:00 watching The Olympics and playing golf @ 07:30.....looking forward to rest day tomorrow!

All in all a good week...hopefully get to put some faces to names at the FD10.

    Bring on week 8.
