Just send back loads of genuine maple syrup :D

Not retro but, wow, No Man's Sky is as disappointing as all hell.
Something that they managed to all but skip past in the trailers and demonstrations is the overwhelming focus upon grubbing for resources, to power the ships engines, power cells for the gun/mining device and so on, and trying to arrange crap in your inventory, a step back to the days of Resident Evil.
All the expectations of soaring into the heavens, space battles and planet exploration are tempered somewhat when you can't take off at will because you have to go looking for plutonium...
Here's hoping it gets better soon

I dunno, I'd known that was going to be a big element of it, perhaps just not shown in the trailers, but I think I remember reading plenty about that.

There's still Sonic the Hedgehog tank tops in Penneys in Limerick if anyone was looking for them, didn't check sizes but they're a fiver.

For someone who liked Elite Dangerous (at least the early days of it) NMS never really appealed to me. I think I was put off by their massive procedurally generated galaxy usp - it can't possibly be as interesting as other open worlds like The Witcher 3 for example. Reading Jim Sterling's review definitely put me off it - don't have time for a grind-a-thon survival game. Looks like his site is still having problems from the DDOS attack of sad fanatics loyal to the game. Anyway, maybe in a years time when it's cheaper and has more content I might pick it up (if there's still a point playing it since everyone will know what's at the centre by then).

Who knows what lies at the centre....
Sounds like a Peter Molyneaux game of a few years ago!

Waiting looks like the best course, at least you'll know what you are getting and the bugs will be ironed out.

The game is gorgeous though, like Firewatch gorgeous.

Probably would have been better if I could have played as Fox McCloud in an ArWing!

I'm not sure how anyone was mislead by No Man's Sky. Plenty of people became zealots about the game but everything that wasn't fan speculation pointed to this being all about resource collecting. What surprised me is just how little there is to do in the game outside resource collecting.

I think Sony really is at fault here. Desperate to have anything to fill in for their lack of exclusives they have taken this game under their arm and it's gotten and normal Triple A release.

Really as it stands this game is more like an advanced Early Access game and really should have been released as such. I can only imagine how much better the game could have been, it could have ended up like the similar and wildly more amazing Starbound which has benefited greatly from an extended early access period to add more gameplay systems to make each world more interesting.

I think the biggest disappointment for me is that No Man's Sky isn't new. Elite 2 and Starglider 2 did the exact same thing except better. Starglider 2 has a big planetary system to explore but instead of going to the surface to shoot at a few rocks and collect bull**** you actually fly around in space and in the atmosphere to shoot things. Far more satisfying and this from a game from 1988.

    Yep, I know.
    The latter point anyway.
It's a very pretty sandbox with not a lot to do.
Even the ship physics is really uncomplicated, too much so.

    Exactly.

It sounded to me like this small talented team (they created the fabulous Joe Danger I believe) stumbled on that interesting mathematical formula and used it (or a variation) to create a world - but turning that into a game and making it fun to inhabit was a much more difficult task. Especially for a handful of devs under the weight of expectation set by Sony.
Fair dues to them for the effort put in - hopefully they'll stick with it for a few years yet (and not rob people blind with crazy expansion prices like that David Braben chap and ED, bloody gouger! :D).

You've hit on where No Man's Sky is pretty amazing.
The landscapes are amazing, together with the artifacts and animals and plants that fill them.
Elite Dangerous, with it's Horizons expansion, has nothing but barren and pretty antiseptic rocks to explore.

What a pity then that the two teams seem to have perfected opposite ends of the concept, Elite filling a near infinite universe with variety, wonder and plenty of things to do, NMS generating incredible colour and variety of planets.

As said, patches and dlc will no doubt improve matters, as before I woukd use Driveclub as an example of Sony pulling it out of the hat and going from a dreadful egg in the face mess to one of the best driving games on any console.

A Japanese Virtua Fighter fan has embarked on a project to make a Akira robot based on the Virtua Fighter polygon model. Using specs from the recently released Virtua Fighter action figure, 3D modeling software and of course a 3D printer we got ourselves a robot Akira Yuki that looks like he is straight out of the game.

I'm tempted to buy an Everdrive GB, be great to use my GBC more, and for it to be portable unlike my Retropie.

    https://krikzz.com/store/home/8-everdrive-gb.html

Apart from it lacking a Real Time Clock (RTC) that affects Harvest Moon and some of the later Pokemon games it seems perfect.

    Any other negatives?

Went into Walmart yesterday and had a quick look at the games. $79.99 for new releases and then add on tax and it comes to just over $90. Yeah, don't think I'll be buying any new games soon...

    It's a disgrace Joe!
Srsly though, that's a shocking price, it works about €62 for $90CAD, fine for us but not for you.

So... I recently had to head out to Boston as part of a training trip for a new job.

Two nights ago I decided to head up to Salem to check out "Game Zone" an amazing retro store... which was unfortunate as I didn't really have any cash to spend on anything as the hotel had put a huge hold on my debit card. Ugh.

Anyway... whilst there I was told that there was a retro themed arcade bar just five minutes from the train station.

Oh my god this place was AMAZING. We NEED something like this here. I know The Rage are trying to get something like this going but it'll be those crappy misconfigured MAME machines that are found around the place no doubt.

I do have a small video planned for my YouTube channel regarding Video Zone but in the mean time have some pics of Bit Bar!

If you're ever out Boston way I highly recommend that you check it out!

(I stole one of these menus as a momento... I regret not buying one of their glasses though.)

It was only after my phone died that I realised that there was an area in the back too with even more classics including Tekken Tag... which was a game I played almost every day for a period of weeks in Atari Expo back in the day.

They pretty much had all the classics there, Donkey Kong, Bust-a-Move, The Simpsons, TMNT, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Burger Time, Space Invaders, Tekken Tag, Pole Position etc etc.

I wish I had had more time there (we had to get the last train back to Boston) but it was amazing!

Definitely recommend checking it out if you're ever on the East Coast.

    Hooray I say![/sarcasm]

    Vestek vs The Rage
You're still sore they wouldn't let you value their games properly!

Some of the images are a little on the EPIC side though.....
Make them smaller post them again!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,278 ✭✭✭MrVestek

Wait... so are the images displaying or not? I'm confused.

I did make the images small... I told the thingy to display them in 640 x 480. Like I've said so many times it's not my fault your screen is super low resolution! :P

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,766 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

The way the forum links to them means they don't display in that resolution.
    I'll try something else.....

    edit: Nope, that didn't work.
The images will have to be resized or be a bit like imgur jpgs with the selectable sizes.
As is, the only way they will display is with the IMG in square parentheses and not with the res in there as well.
At least, that's how I think it works...
    I've been wrong before.
As a result, with the simple IMG pre and post fix they display at their full res, which is EPIC in nature.

Actually the bit bar post reminded me of my friend in Oklahoma who has been working in the coin op industry for years. Him and an Arcade collector plan on opening up an Arcade over there with clsssic machines. From the sounds of it, its going to be epic. Will let you guys know when it happens.

Anyone have any idea what this is? Opened the cab up last week to rummage around and found that sitting inside. Tried searchin the serial/model numbers on the side, but no joy.

Took me longer than it should have to realise it was a jamma pcb... Spotted the edge connector after 5 minutes. Probably helped that it said jamma on it

I could hook it up to the cab. Wanted to delay the suspense for a little bit. Haven't had a chance to try it yet with work getting in the way
