No need to drop out of the thread because you are doing a different marathon surely?

    Which ones were you considering?

No, not out of the thread, there's still great advice to pick up on here.

Alternatives, depending on life and budget, Frankfurt on the same day, Barca a couple of weeks beforehand, San Sebastián in November, Clonakilty early December.
For now, I'm sitting in the sunshine having a few beers, I had a 4 miler pencilled in but have given myself the night off......the rest of the can't do that though!

I am not going to be able to make the LSR meet up on Saturday morning....hopefully it goes well.

Maybe get the chance to put some faces to names at the FD 10 mile.

Brings me nicely to the FD 10m (and then DCHM). What should we be doing in these races? Run at PMP, easy, half and half, or go for a PB?

Hi kin9pin - you have permission to go for this run all out. The training plans have taken these races into account and they are excellent opportunities to try out your race-day prep routine, running in a crowd, running with a pacer (HM only), drafting race-reports, etc.

The boards plan is reducing its mileage in the week leading up to the FD10 and HHN1 drops one of the three mid-weeks runs altogether.

That said - racing it is not a requirement. Not all of us ran both races last year for scheduling and geographic reasons. In that case, find a suitable replacement (e.g. a proper long run or a 10M solo at PMP effort or better). Also, if you feel you'd be better served at this stage in your training program by a longer, slower run, then by all means, go ahead. You can also decide to run the race at PMP or PHMP if that feels better.

Thanks, just what I wanted to hear :) . It is my first ever official 10m race so I'm guaranteed a PB, but I'd like to give it a good go.

See you on Saturday. I'll be wearing a fetching green top and almost matching runners :)

    Hi,

What plan are you following? Could you post it up?
Don't forget that with a 2 mile warm up + 2 Mile cool down will bring you to over 17 for the day and that is pretty close to most long runs anyway.

Cheers, I'm on week 16 of the BAA Level 2 plan.

Pomplamousse I hope you feel better! Take some time off and take care of yourself, let your body catch up on itself. It's a lot of pressure, not just on your body but on your mind when you're planning it all out and have FOMO with regards to important runs. It's still early days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 582 ✭✭✭Pomplamousse

Thanks for your wise words Extrasupervery:) It's really frustrating but I definitely won't run again until I'm feeling 100% ready. Last time the antibiotics kicked in really quickly so fingers crossed my recovery is as quick this time round.

Random question. I'm signed up for a half marathon this weekend, which I was planning on doing instead of the 14 mile long run on my plan, but I can't make the race now.

There's another half marathon I could do the following weekend, which would still be 5 weeks out for me, so I'd be looking to race it fairly hard if I were to sign up.

The thing is, I'd have to sacrifice a 20 mile long run that weekend, and assuming I took a recovery week after the race, that would leave me with only one week of normal training before the taper.

That sounds too disruptive to me, so I've decided to carry on with the plan as is, and not do any racing. Is that the right decision?

For reference, I did one 20 mile run last Saturday and will do another one 3 weeks out from Berlin, regardless of the half marathon. It's just a question of whether a third 20 mile run would serve me better.

Yeah stick with the plan. If you race the half not only do you miss out on the 20 mile run but you will also go off plan due to the recovery after. Remember keep the main thing the main thing:)

Hey all - a reminder of the LSR meet-up in Phoenix Park next week

Hey NOP98, apologies only logging on now as been very busy week, plus have been feeling off so only got my first run (5m) of the week done today. Anyway, unfortunately I won't make PP this Sat, but I will get my LSR done Nice and early Sat, Marlay Pk will have to do me :)

Which half are you looking at?

I'd drop the session on the Friday, run the half on the weekend, drop the session the following Tuesday and then back on track as per the plan. You should be ok to do a long run by the following weekend.

Bit of a random one in England - Kimbolton Castle. Only looking at this one as it's within reasonable driving distance from me.

I'll have a think about it over the weekend anyway, cheers.

Thank you for all your kind messages last week. I've been reading you since, with an aching heart :o

After one week of no running, only strengthening exercises, went back to the physio today. I'm pain free but he doesn't want me jump back to the plan, and it looks like the boards plan is out of consideration from now on, even if I'll be fine I'll continue with HHN1. Basically he says my body couldn't adapt as quick as the plan "grows" so if I went back now I'd get an other injury again.

I've to do loads of walking now, and light 1min jog-1min walk sessions plus harder exercises. He's not too happy with me doing the FD10 next Saturday but I promised I'd be really slow, careful and if there's pain I'd stop.

So that's the situation now :( I feel pretty sad and frustrated, and not too sure anymore if I'll be able to make it to the marathon. But there's still some hope left :)

Recently signed up for the marathon and just found this thread when looking for a training program - I'm in!

Have you raced before? If so what are your PBs?

I've never done a marathon but in the last 3 years I've done a load of 5k races, good few 10k races and 2 half marathons (+2 more as part of half-ironman triathlons this year).

    5k - 23:04 (Galway 5k Series 2013 - Tuam)
    10k - 48:20 (Colemanstown 10km 2015)
    Half-Marathon - 01:58:16 (Kinvara Rock and Road 2016)

Do you still need to take walk breaks in your training?

No, not any more - just slow the pace and keep running.

How much training do you currently do ?

My training and exercise tends to come in waves. I sign up for an event, train, drop off, panic close to the event and cram some training again, do the event then stop until I sign up for another!

    When the lumpy training is averaged out of the year it's not a lot;
    2016 so far...
    16 cycles (762km) - 23.8km / week
    13 swims (21km) - 338m / week
    22 runs (208km) - 6.5km / week :o

What do you want to achieve?

I'm aiming at sub-4:30 for this. I've never ran beyond 21.2km before so going into unchartered territory but I think that's a good goal...

How many days a week can you train? And what plan do you intend to follow?

I have never successfully stuck to a training plan but I know I'll not be able to wing this on the day (or cram the weeks beforehand) so going to follow the Hal Higdon Novice 1 plan.

Why are you running this marathon?

It's the next logical fitness goal for me.

4 years ago I started at a couch-to-5km level and worked up to my first 5km run without stopping. Since then I've built up to...
    - 5km run (2012)
    - 10km run (2012)
    - Sprint triathlon (2013)
    - Half-marathon (2014)
    - Olympic triathlon (2016)
    - Half-ironman (2016)
    - Full marathon ... (this)
    - Full Ironman... (maybe 2018??)

I'm toying with the idea of a full Ironman goal in a couple of years but need to experience a full marathon first before I can even start putting a plan in place for that. Also need to get much more consistent with my training!

Some of you guys who don't like gel belts might prefer to wear something like the below for carrying your gels. Also room for glasses in large back pocket or visor/cap etc.
I got my first pair for first marathon in 2013 and am wearing them right now so they do last the test of time!

I'll be there. The HHN1 says 12 miles for tomorrow, I wouldn't be opposed to 14, but it's probably best, given the gospel according to Brother Nop, to the stick the plan...

Thanks. I have some RonHill shorts with 1 pocket and some gel loops, but I don't think they'll hold enough for a marathon.

I am planning on being there for the LSR tomorrow, but waiting on a mechanic for my car. Got home this morning and I have warning lights everywhere, just hoping it's only a dead battery).

I'll let you know later if I can't make it.

Sorry to hear, Pomplamousse. Pity you'll miss the session tomorrow - but you're right in making sure you're 100% recovered before returning to running. Take the time, write-off the sessions you might miss.

Hey Szilvike - there are some positives to focus on, e.g. you're pain-free, you were on a good upwards trajectory before this all happens and you have a fallback option in the HHN1 plan. I agree, don't give up hope.. but be careful.

Take care with the FD10, as you say yourself, don't force anything. This will be harder than abandoning a solo training run as there will be so many others around you pushing ahead. So you will need to be really disciplined....
