Ironman Road Closures, forcing M50 Toll usage 14th August

not sure if this it the correct place to post this but....

I live near Castleknock hotel and most of the time when heading southbound I access the M50 through Chapelizod. It takes no more than a few minutes more when it is not rush hour. I was just sick of the tolls building up costing me a fortune.

I am heading to Carton House next Sunday (normally a handy short spin for me around the back roads) but I see the Ironman is coming to town again this weekend with road closures galore. It appears to me the only way across the Liffey is to use the M50 toll road. I don't mind (well I do mind them, but I can get over it) the road closures and diversions, but I don't appreciate being held to ransom and forced into using a toll road.

Will there be free usage of the M50 toll road during the road closures. I seriously doubt it.

Nevermind having to use the toll, isn't the only way to cross the Liffey when it's on going to be taking a DART?

Can you follow the Yellow Road on the left of the map on pages 2 and 3 http://www.ironman.com/~/media/b66f26d24e184a9c91665a7cc8a07a12/imdub%20resident%20leaflet%20%20%20west%202016%20final%20email.pdf

Brings you via Kilcock and straight to Carton. The extent of the road closures are pretty ridiculous to anyone living around part of the city that's affected.

It's actually a good point he made. i was initially thinking you could go through Lucan handy enough, or even drive around Leixlip, which'd generally be handier than going through Chapelizod. But after seeing all those roads where being used too. It's of much greater impact to everyone else that the only way for anyone to get around Dublin, will be via the M50.

...instead of you know, you worrying about having to pay a toll.

This is the first I've seen word of it. Has there been much promotion out and about to tell other people of this?

    From the PDF:
    "07.00 – 10.15
During this time there will be no Vehicle access across the Liffey in Dublin City Centre. Please use the M50 as the alternative route for crossing the city during this time."

That's taking the fcuking piss, I understand it is good to have events like this and certain road closures are necessary but to not be able to cross the Liffey at all bar the M50 is a joke.

Again first I've heard of this and just by chance, should have been far better advertised. Going to be a feckin nightmare on sunday morning.

The M50 is no substitute for people cycling.
    Its a joke.

its a stupid point. How does he expect me to get a DART from Castleknock across the Liffey to Carton House.

Regarding promotion of the event, first I heard of it was an email from Carton earlier on this morning. And I live right beside a main road that will be shut down.

So they want to force Learners to use a road they aren't liceneced to use, who would be responsible for any crashes that are caused by people being forced to use a road they can't legally be on?

Seems amazing that the Castleknock hotel, Porterstown sports grounds, church and Castleknock GAA club will be inaccessible for large parts of a Sunday morning. There is no indication of access arrangements.

yes it does. I'll be at the Hotel/Golf club this evening, so will be on the lookout for any information around the place regarding the closure

No. If you can't legally use a particular road, then you still can't legally use a particular road.

They didn't tell you to take the DART - they're highlighting another issue, that for thousands of other people there will be no way of crossing the Liffey other than using the DART.

To be fair the Marathon causes serious issues across south Dublin every October Bank Holiday - I'll accept it doesn't force people to use a tolled road, but it causes massive disruption.

This is just a tad too much IMO.

Is it really true that buses and cars will not be able to cross the Liffey over ANY bridge in the city during the time mentioned?

I'm probably being over dramatic here, but how can cross city buses go via M50 FGS.

Perhaps I am missing something vital in my horror lol.

You are. They're not going cross-city until after 10:00.

    OK, thanks.

Still a big disruption nonetheless. Not everyone stays in the leaba forever on a Sunday morning!

    A few questions :-

    1. Who authorised this?
    2. Why is there no publicity indicating the closure of cross-city traffic?
    3. What was the cause of last Saturdays closure - I had a friend come into Dublin Airport on Sat evening to be told there were no buses running cross the city. He had to wait 3 hours to get to Terenure - again no warning,

    thanks

    It's a triathlon!

Run to the Liffey, swim across, cycle to Carton House! :)

Seriously, these events usually allow a certain amount of "local Access". So I imagine some provision has been allowed for access to local hotels, houses and businesses along the route.

I can't answer your questions, but I am stunned that there is very little advance publicity about this.

Might be Dublin City Council in conjunction with NTA for the Ironman. But I sure dunno.

Well just take M50 and be there in no time.

    1. Who authorised this?
The same as any other road closure for events for public works I expect; the responsible council.

It's a completely commercial event with entries costing 250 euro , love to know how much the council are getting

No signs up anywhere between Lucan and Castleknock hotel or anywhere around Castleknock, Porterstown or Luttrelstown about any road closures. Nothing in the golf club or any knowledge of how access will be on Sunday. Anyone I spoke with, was not aware of any disruption.

Bad form all around. I remember last year, there was a bit of information around the place beforehand, but so far this year, it seems you have to know all about it yourself.

But come on.... Ironman is the boss. The little people on the route are nothing.

Close the roads, close the bridges, but sure we don't need to tell anyone at all.

They might be waiting until closer to the event to put up the signs. Over recent years there has been a certain element taking down signs for various events.

Signs are up around Maynooth for the last 4 or 5 days and a large flashing sign went up today informing of road closures and the diversion route on the Moyglare road.

Signs have been up all along the Chapelizod Road for the past week.
