Murphy up to 3rd now in Laser Radial.
Are you watching this, or how are you following it?

Driven mad here trying to find it anywhere!

Britain target rowing and cycling from years back. They reckoned that while talent is important in those strenght nad endurance events they could 'make' medalists. Seems to have paid off in fairness.

Denmark and New Zealand the same , we still go with the competing is more important than winning mentality .

Pat Hickey was saying this 20 years and more ago, lets focus on the small sports that could bring in medals, though he was probably thinking of judo!!
I suppose it's something that is more easily said than done, though. I mean you could have said let's target rowing 20 years ago, cos there was talent coming up, but if the federation is in a total mess you may just be wasting money. That said, we did quite well with boxing even though you couldn't say the IABA is the more far seeing of organistions!

Watching on the 3d tracker cus its not the race being broadcast and obviously RTE ignoring it.

But shes in 1st at the moment by 13 seconds at the last mark, one more rounding to go and then onto the finish!!

Coming on to BBC5 after a short break - we might get the finish if we're lucky!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 32,072 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

23 seconds ahead now at last mark (I'm getting the hang of this at last!)

Sounds like BBC might stick with it for the second race, hopefully.

Re the above two quotes - anyone know why both teams appeared to kill themselves to win their heat, when in both cases the first two boats qualified, and the third-places were a good distance behind (in one case a full 10 seconds if I remember rightly). Surely they'd save themselves for the next round/final?

    ?

1st in the heat gets a seeded lane in the semifinal . The men definitely went for the win , the women weren't too bothered

Any sailing people predict how likely Murphy is to win a medal? I thought she was either out of form or going to struggle in the prevailing conditions (lighter winds), or so I'd read in some places. Maybe she's a big tournament competitor and this is what she's been targeting. Could be her time.

I think she'll be incredibly lucky to medal. And I sincerely hope I'm completely wrong in that, by the way.

But I think today's conditions (from what I've read/heard) are totally not what was expected, and if normal light conditions prevail for the rest of the days then she's goosed.

Like I say, I'd never be happier to be wrong.

So Rio is unpredictable with winds, it usually has lighter air but they had a storm yesterday that nobody went out to train in even so they have heavier than usual, its really hard to say tbh but this is a great start!

Cheers. I know where you're coming from, you have to be realistic. She's such a focussed and determined athlete anyway, so there's always a chance.

2nd race is gonna have the cameras on it so BBC will deffinitely have it on one of their channels, theres talk of RTE showing it too

I feel sorry for her in a way, she went out there with such expectation from the public after coming so close the last time, but the chances are that the conditions just won't suit her.

Is there any other sport where conditions outside of your control (the wind strength vs her height/weight) play such a big part in your chances of success? Boxers, rowers, etc all compete in weight categories so it's somewhat controlled, but dinghy sailing is such a weather lottery!

Race 2 being broadcast on BBC5 for anyone who has the Olympic channels tuned in on Sky.

Finn Lynch 14th in his first race.

Second full-rig race hasn't managed to get started yet, which will delay the radial start.

Still no start, the men took a while to get going

Being too far to the right seems to be working against her

Yeah.... Graphic showing she's way behind

Oh no she isn't...... they're getting a bit ahead of themselves on the telly commentary.

What was the blue boat that went around her?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 32,072 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Eh.... she wasn't forced to tack just there? Jaysus.

Bit of a basic mistake to make in Olympic commentary, surely!

Yeah they are kinda trying to simplfy things i think.

She had to tack to stay with the leaders is what I would say, she doesnt want to go left and swap sides too much

Oohhh.... Could be a mistake there.

The tracker showed she was, down to about sixth last time it showed, she seems to be stuck now
