Adam Peaty's 100-1 on to win the 100 breaststroke. Has there ever been a heavier favourite in any Olympic race ever?

He just looks like any world class swimmer. How is he so clearly better? That's a genuine question.

I'd say it's likely, over so many thousands of events and races bound to have been a fair few certainties. Dream team in 92 maybe?

Annemiek Van Vleuten reported to have "cerebral trauma & three spinal fractures" after her fall.

    That does not sound good.

Ah no..does not sound good at all. My heart goes out to her and her loved ones, hope to god it's not as bad as it seems.

Oh no :( That sounds awful

Edit : perhaps not quite as bad as it sounds though.....the very latest is that she was concussed and suffered three very small fractures to her spine, it seems they're optimistic about her

The Irish hockey team can't score against NL for love nor money : they've had more shots on goal and more corners than their opponents and are still 4-0 down

Thankfully they all wear helmets nowadays. Could have been fatal otherwise. Looked like she landed on her head in the footage.

RTE are using the News Now Channel a lot more for this Olympics, there is quite a bit of live coverage on it.

Decent Basketball game between Spain and Croatia at the moment, Timmy McCarthy in full flow on commentary.

Fiona Doyle spoke the truth after she missed out on the 100m Breaststroke Semi Finals by one place, Yuliya Efimova qualified in second place ...
Cheaters are cheaters. She [Efimova] has tested positive five times and she’s gotten away with it again. It’s like FINA keep going back on their word, and the IOC keep going back on their word. And FINA caved in to [Vladimir] Putin, and that’s just not fair on the rest of the athletes who are clean. Who are you supposed to trust now? They have signs all over the Village saying we are a clean sport, and it’s not. And I just don’t think that’s fair.

She missed out by 5 places, but she's right about the Russian. Their Athletics and Weightlifting teams have been excluded, as have their Paralympic team, so having swimmers, boxers and what-not there is ridiculous.

Efimova is the Russian poster girl for state sponsored doping and irredeemable cheating, absolutely no shame at all and fair play to Doyle for letting her have it with both barrels.

The British swimmer Adam Peaty, who has already broken the WR in Rio, goes in his final at 2.53am.

Peaty seems a really decent fellow. His mum was interviewed earlier, never been on a plane before she went to Rio, came across as really simple people in the best possible way, just a great Olympic story.

Winning by one and a half seconds was very impressive stuff (as well as smashing the WR)

Why are swimming times constantly getting faster while for the most part athletics times have stagnated or regressed? Doping doesn't explain it as 1) not everyone is doping 2) people doped 20 years ago too and 3) people dope in athletics and other sports too. Michelle Smith's juiced time from 1996 would not have beaten one of the 8 finalists in the 400 free there.

This seems to be a very fast pool for starters, several world records in the last couple of days.

I get the impression swimming hasn't been quite as blighted by drugs as athletics. Not sure if you can trust any WR on the track....it's possible every single one of them was achieved on drugs.

Who is the over excited swimming presenter on BBC?

I'd disagree. I'd hazard a guess that doping is equally rampant in both. I also believe there are many clean champions in both. To think there are less drug cheats in swimming is bizarre, particularly with Russians not banned.
