Why is Gary O'Toole not on the RTE panel?
He was asked this on Off The Ball a week or two ago. He said he wouldn't do any serious media work for the Olympics unless he had the time to do the research on the competitors and he just doesn't have the time these days what with fixing people's bodies and all that carry on.

Picture Quality on RTÉ News Now is atrocious for the cycling! Anyone know who are commentating for RTÉ?

The reason I ask is because I am enjoying their commentary - would'nt mind seeing RTÉ get the big Tour races and these boys commentating.

Sad for him but at least he medalled. That was an epic race. Hats off to rte presenters. Not one bit annoying!

Some race. Glad the long time leader got a medal

On the BBC they were calling it that there'd be trouble on that final descent and they were spot on. Dramatic stuff. Glad the Polish guy held on for a medal in the end.

Britain's Adam Peaty blew his own 100 breast WR away in a heat today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

Danish athletes constantly amaze me by their fighting qualities and ability to deliver medals if they are in with a sniff. Makes me envy to see similarly small countries to our own do so well across a range of sports and deliver a haul of medals. That's why I always cringe when I see our media and indeed our own athletes talk about us punching above our weight and taking over the world in sports. It's so far off the mark.

And the "Iron Lady" Hosszhu just .13 off the WR in the 400 medley, she'll surely nail it the next day!

Saw that. And in her late 20s. Swimming a heap of races at these games. I heard 18. I assume that's 18 races across all strokes. Loving day 1. Times are great, only for the finals being late!

Phelps still the attraction for me. He swims in3 individual events. Won all 3 at the U.S. trials. He's obviously amazing, but where is D emerging U.S. talent if a 31 year old is the best U.S. male qualifier?

The beeb covering men's team gymnastics. Britain leading... The venue looks a bit naff!

No medals in her previous 3 Olympics but have a feeling she's going to make up for it here with a bit of interest!

Interesting descriptino by the co-commentator on RTE on Peaty's performance: "The equivalent of Usain Bolt winning his 100m heat by 10m". Maybe he was over-egging it just a little bit!

And it seems that it may be likely that more WRs go in the heats due to it being at a more preferable/optimal time for many swimmers. There was a very good article posted on boards about this. Lot of aggro from swimmers regarding the late time for the finals.

I heard some coach giving out about it earlier today, saying it was totally unfair to those swimming multiple events, pretty cr"p if your on the late event and then have to go to doping control after it and swim a heat early the following day! Only thing I guess is they must have known this schedule a year ago so they would have had time to adjust, but maybe it's not as simple as that. IOC No.1, NBC No.2 and everybody else nowhere is the general rule I guess.

The gymnastics is one I'm definitely looking forward to. Havent seen Simone Biles before but read a lot about her and seems an amazing athlete.
