So they start in September and expect to have 100k accessible fibre homes by March. I'll believe it when I see it. This is the same crowd who provide me with 2mbs - ist don't think so.
well Notting set in stone they could end finishing by April.I know it a pain waiting on it I'm on 3mb myself but at least you have FTTH at some stage better than waiting on NBP.

Yeah I just think they're not really trying to do much until they find out who's winning the nbp.

    Now the real fibre connections?
There are 87 FTTC exchanges left to do, some of which won't be done before the FTTH rollout commences. This is down from 186 on June 15, so in the last 7 weeks they have enabled 99 exchanges.

FTTH rollout was always going to be done over the winter. I'd reckon the 100k homes will be done by late May. There will be delays over the winter both due to winter weather and also the fact that if there's a storm the techs will be busy doing repairs.

hopefully I'll start to see the wiring process in a few weeks. Most of the ground work is done between the last FTTC cabinet and my home. Ducting work started early April, then they came back 3 weeks ago and uncovered more manholes while routing tubing and last week they placed wider than normal metal holders up the side of certain poles where they uncovered manholes. The black tubing from underground is now run up through these metal holders and dangling at the top of them waiting to be connected to something else.

Would be good to see some progress somewhere in the country. Just seems to be a waiting game for the last few months on the FTTH aspect.

back in early April when work first started here I thought that by this stage, I'd nearly be up and running and lots of areas with extensive work done, some areas close to completion.

I think everywhere is still at the ground work stage, I don't think any wiring has taken place anywhere just yet. To date anything I've seen or heard about has been:

Surveying, hedge cutting, ducting, manholes, pole checking and pole replacement.

Also I would have expected by now some sort of notice on Eir's FTTH line checker for the first 100,000 premises. Eir knows exactly which premises/lines are included in the first 100,000. Some sort of notice like fiber coming soon would be good and at least confirm who is getting it.

The sooner FTTC is finished the better, at this stage all of the wiring for the locations announced in the first 100,000 homes has yet to start and its already first week of August. I really don't see them meeting the March 2017 deadline at this rate unless the wiring process is much quicker than I think it is and they don't run into severe weather over the winter.

My guess is they are waiting on the NBP bid. This blue line stuff is gonna happen but it's just a case of who's gonna fund it.

I doubt it. If they wait until the winning bidder is announced, it might look bad on their part and make them less attractive

My Local exchange is being upgraded at the moment in Milltown Co Kerry. How do you find out if it is FTTC or FTTH. I have contacted Eir but no one seems to know.

    Both
    MIK1_E01

Fibre Build commenced - completion work is in progress

Thats FTTC(eVDSL). FTTH blue lines are there for later works.

2x VDSL cabs are planned also so if you live more than 700m East/SouthEast of the crossroads then you'll likely need to wait longer.

FTTC Autumn 2016. FTTH between Dec 2017 and 2020 if you are on the blue line here. http://fibrerollout.ie/where-and-when/ You will only get FTTH if you are within ~1.2km

Thanks for the replies, Im only 700 M from the exchange so I should be ok, My area on the map is marked with the blue line. I did notice that fiber cables have being layed from MIK1_E01 which is 700 meters away to my local cabinet which is 100 metres away,, So hopefully I should get a really good speed, Currently getting 16 MB

yeah no way they'll sit and do nothing till the NBP is announced, would make Eir look real bad. While no place has been wired as of yet, the ground work already carried out by Eir doesn't exactly come cheap and they are funding all this themselves so it would be a waste to not finish what they have started!

I'm just a bit surprised that they didn't start the wiring yet knowing that winter time isn't the greatest time for doing such work. I know the FTTC rollout is coming to completion but I still would have thought that maybe they would have started wiring some areas by now.

I thought some of the first 100,000 FTTH have already "been passed"? In one of @marno21's updates on the sticky above.

They have started, KNN started clearing hedgrows back around February so they could work through the summer. I've personally seen them working their way into the Dublin mountains and there've been other reports from posters where works have begun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 scottyboi_2016

KNN were installing light-blue cable in a manhole near me yesterday. They also dug up around some poles and exposed some black wires.

I think those were FTTH for the towns, not the blue line scheme.

although speeds of up to 100Mb/s were mentioned in the Tech Bytes report, presumably in error
    FTTH

Cavan, 74 new premises near Cavan Town (cab 025) can now access broadband speeds of up to 100Mb/s

Wicklow, 278 new premises near Greystones (cab 010 and 059) can now access broadband speeds of up to 100Mb/s

Sligo, 169 new premises near Rathedmond (cab 039) can now access broadband speeds of up to 100Mb/s

Open Eir tweeted that they will roll out up to 600km of aerial FTTH fiber per month, if true that's very impressive. Hopefully that tweet means they gonna start this very soon.

This is the FTTH rollout to the 66 towns. Rathedmond in Sligo is not on the 100,000 homes planned for this winter so I would imagine they were all under the 66 towns element.

For reference, the list of the 100,000 premies to be passed is on this list here: https://www.siliconrepublic.com/comms/eir-reveals-first-100k-rural-locations-to-get-1gbps-broadband

That could be interpreted in several ways. Are they measuring each strand individually? I would rather they give us the number of homes qualifying for a connection than arbitary misleading information like that. Suppose that stat wouldn't look as good.

It take time there getting everything ready for the rollout in Autumn. It better they take there time and do it right than do a rush job and end up doing it ass way.It more than likely starting in September with the first 50,000 finish by December, and the second 50,000 by March.

Just noticed the NGA exchange status bubble has disappeared from my local area, probably since yesterday. It changed from planned to 'build commenced' around a month ago, but has just gone altogether. The cabinet status bubble still says planned and the blue lines are still there. Is this something to be worried about?

Has happened on my local exchange too. Was originally down for 2016/17 but has now just changed to cabinet planned for this area

There is another reason for the start in September....the Bird nesting season will be over!

Many of the green FTTH tags have disappeared. The green tags for Tara and Kilbride are gone. A planned blue FTTC cabinet dot has also disappeared in Ratoath.

I see Tara was on the original list to be done by March 2017, though Kilbride wasn't. I'm in Oldtown, North County Dublin, which is also on the original list. Maybe they are just updating the info and need to take the tags offline while they are doing that ....?

with the FTTH rural rollout starting very soon they need to update the map even more such as colour coding the 'blue' lines to 'green lines' where they have started working in progress, would be easier to identify where work is happening rather than just tagging the exchange itself.

I had noticed Tara gone, also Dunderry in Meath. I assumed it was just a mistake in the updating of the map but I suppose it could be more sinister. I agree with Gonzo about a new colour scheme being needed for the rollout.
