    FYI

    From Thursday 4th

    http://www.lidl.ie/en/Offers.htm?id=853

    Running jackets
    Leggings
    Gym Bag
    Running tops
    Shorts
    Runners
    Insoles
    Pocket radio
    Heart rate watch
    Running rucksack
    Vivofit Fitness armband
    Running Socks
    Massage Stick
    Back/ankle/knee brace
    Grid roller
    Gels
    Protein bars
    Zero electrolyte tabs
    Protein drinks and powder.

Not to be dismissive of the Lidl gear (from someone that has got plenty of it over the years) but its good to have some cheap warm running gear that you can take with you on the day of DCM and then dispose of it to the side at start time - better this than to have your best Under Armour gear and having to queue up to put in bag drop area etc. Now there is still the concern of something to wear afterwards but all the same maybe have a warm running jacket that you don't want to keep and hold onto it for the big day... Or you can just use a black sack with arm holes in it like many others :D

BTW.. strongly recommend the High5 Gel's over all others! The 20 pack in lidl on Thursday is great value.

Never heard anything good about them. I would recommend spending a bit on runners. Some good deals on the list.

+1 to that just got a pair of asics kayano 21 in Kildare village for 120 euros lots of selection great value considering they were 175 last year. Invest in your feet you're going to be relying on them over the next number of weeks.

It's in Longwood this year. The idea of this run IS to do it at LSR pace but believe me it's hard to do that in a race environment. If you haven't signed up for it already my advice would be don't. You can practice everything you need at the HM or your 20 mile LSR which we will recommend as a 'dress rehearsal'. It's a super race, very well organised etc etc but really unless you're experienced at running races strictly to prescribed pace I'd leave it out this time.

I was thinking of doing this  Mainly because it's so hard to get a good 20 mile run in that mimics race conditions - as the marathon gets closer our club starts running the marathon route but with so many roads to cross, people stopping for toilet breaks, traffic and busy streets its not ideal.
There isn't a pacer for the pace I want to run tho - so I'll be at the back of the pack as usual :o I really need to practice pacing so a 20 miler on my own might not be a bad thing

Bear in mind this is only my advice :) but, no matter what way you look at this its a race, a race environment and there will be people racing it.... if you have years of running behind you and many miles in your legs already you won't do any harm by taking this in, if that's not you though, and you haven't already signed up I really would give it a miss, especially if there are no pacers for your planned marathon time. No matter how slow we are, as runners we are all competitive and it's very difficult to jog around a 20 mile race when people are streaming past you (they're the ones that are not on this thread soaking up all the good advice :p).

For those of you that have already signed up obviously you are going to go ahead and do it - I'll be there on the day though, watching :D #keepitslow

The toughest run of the six weeks so far!!! Running enemy no. 1, that dreaded wind. Just ran 10k on grass, of which the first 5k was into a head wind. Planned marathon pace!!! forget it, battled to keep as close as I could to it and I'd swear the wind changed direction as I did :D Anyway run complete and I'm glad I stuck to what I'd planned to do, after all it could be like this on D day :)

I think this week I'm experiencing the tiredness that a few others reported last week. I felt very lethargic on last night's easy run. 7 miles with 5 at PMP tonight, could be a struggle.

Morning runs FTW. Great feeling getting out there when it's quiet. Shower, hydrate, breakfast and then you're ready to take on the world. It's gonna be tougher when the mornings get dark but that's what street lights are for!

Don't worry this is normal (getting it the same myself this week). Be sure to use common sense on the PMP run. If you feel you are working at two high an effort (especially in the wind today) don't be afraid to scale pace back 5-10 seconds to ensure the effort is right. Your body can't tell the difference between a 9 min and 9.30 mile, but it can certainly tell the difference between a 7/10 and a 9/10 in terms of perceived effort.

I was out too ... All I could do was laugh at the wind. My route has ireland longest bridge on it and I swear it felt like the most exposed place today. BIt smiled and battled through and glad I did! Kept at 9.00 per miles as steady as I could. Any one got any advice for breathing effectively in wind? I keep feeling it's getting swept away from me!

It looks like I have to take at least 7 days off running. Went to the physio today, he thinks I might have a bit of cartilage damage behind my kneecap. Gave me exercises and told me not to run and try not to even walk unless I have to, for a week. Will go back next Friday and see what he says... Also recommended to have an MRI done on my knee.

I really, really hope that the rest and the exercises will help and I can come back to you guys very soon! If I can't do the boards plan, I hope at least I can continue with the HHN1.

Happy running for the rest of the week everyone and mind your bodies!!!

Sorry to hear that Szilvike, hope you're on the mend quickly.

I always always dread the PMP runs for some reason, but they're never as bad as I expect, you'd think I'd have realised by now:P My first half today was against the wind which was fairly tough, but switched direction for the second half and that was so much fun. If the wind could be with us, pushing us along for the entire marathon, that'd be great please thanks.

Not sure where I start on this one so I will just let it flow and brain dump. I ran DLR Bay 10k this morning in place of Fingal 10k last weekend - primarily cause I have run it before and just decided to choose this one over the Fingal. I tend to be down in that area of DL a good bit too so close to home for me.

Ok, NOP98.., no pressure on my race report, which apologies will be brief as its kinda a blur, as got a PB knocked 5mins off last year's DLR and my last 10km (Lust for Life in April 2016) so delira have forgotten exactly what happened today. ...

Brilliant reports, lads, thanks for writing it down!

Does anyone know which shop I can buy Garmin charger?
I am a LITTLE bit anxious that I cant find mine for the last 3 days... This made me learn how to pair the watch with with mobile however I need to charge the watch.
Thanks a lot. Going to the park for a 10k to calm me down.
Hi Kabuxa, did you get sorted? There are several different types of garmin charger interfaces. I just got a new forerunner 610 which is different to my old one which was the FR 110. So I have a spare 110 charger (a fiddly clip not unlike a clothes peg) as my 110 is dead. I am guessing since you talk about pairing with mobile you have a different watch with a different charger interface. If the 110 charger is any use to you id be happy to give it to you. If not then maybe try eBay. Let me know. I'm going on hols on Friday early put could stick in the post to you tomorrow if it was of use.

Got my 7 miles with 5 @pmp in this evening .

Breezy evening but very happy with the run

Funny one this morning on my PMP. I ran without glasses, just before sunrise. After the 1m warmup I started increasing speed and only focused on the seconds on my watch, couldn't make out the minute.
Saw *:45 so ran faster, *:25 so ran faster and wondered why I felt I was pushing so hard for 9 minute pace. Finally focused after half a mile and I was running at 8:15! The next 4.5 miles were a breeze after that!
I really don't know why I didn't trust my body. I knew I was running too fast, but it just didn't click.

just wondering what the consensus is re fueling on the longer lsrs in the weeks ahead.

I've been experimenting on my lsrs with gels etc for a number of weeks now and I'm reasonably sure about what I will be doing on the big day.

Problem is I'm now sorta used to taking on fuel every half hour or so on the long runs , my feeling is this is too much in training. Should I not fuel and let the body do its thing with fat , fuel less or continue as is? Which of those options will best prepare me for Marathon Day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 316 ✭✭kittyclaws

Szilvike rest up and take care, a week isn't too bad - I felt great when I cam back after a couple of days rest :)

Weird one - I keep getting a dead leg when I run.. It happened last week and I took 4 days off running. Done my 14 mile LSR on Monday no probs. Last night I got the pain again almost as soon as I started running, when I'd stop and stretch it would stop for a while and then gradually return. I done 6 miles - it was more annoying than painful.
I Googled today and it looks like either a pulled tendon or a trapped nerve - has anyone any experience of this?
I've emailed my physio so waiting to hear back from her too, I really want to do the R&R half this weekend, but will follow her orders. :(

I need to find a flatter training route, I don't think running hills and trails is doing me much good for marathon training.

well the R&R has an incline of 222 meters which wont help with that!!
