Every sport? What about curling, snooker, chess, sailing and bowls to name but a few.

Snooker was caught up in match fixing and isn't in the olympics anyway.

The world of sport would be thrown into disarray if Ireland didn't sent over a few boxers and horses.

Wo owe it to the world of sport.

That she wasn't caught doping at the Olympics? Yes. She still has all her medals.

    Said doped, not caught doping.

The evidence is stacked against her, and there was a documentary about how that type of doping occurred.

Well if no one makes a stand - does it mean they don't care either, what if an Irish athlete is denied a medal by a Russian one???

    The Olympics is tainted anyway.

I doubt you know anything about the enormity of the effort required simply to qualify for an Olympic event. It cannot be overstated, and even more so from a country as under funded as Ireland.

To say to an athlete 'we're gonna show those Ruskies - we won't go, that'll learn 'em' would be taking the piss.

I'm sure they'd notice if the team that came 41st in 2012 and 61st in 2008 withdrew

So we all go along with the pretence?

    Because of Russia doping?

Flo Jo ,( never caught I think,
Just look at pics of her through the years and you will know)
    Marion Jones. (her husband too)
    Lance Armstrong.
    Tim Montgomery
    Tyson gay
    Justin Gatlin

Just these off the top of my head.
Many more I couldn't be assed writing down.
But these few were breaking world records.

Especially the cases of Lance and Marion, 2 icons and it was all a lie.

No not just Russia doping, the complete undermining of WADA, and basically, turning a blind eye to doping and corruption.

And I'm aware of the sacrifices athletes make to get to the olympics, but if its unfair, flawed and corrupt, whats the point???

Does anyone even believe the olympics is clean???

I have to say I laughed when I heard about there secret mousehole where they swapped the dirty samples for clean ones.

It's like something out of a heist movie.

You can call it that if you like. I would be strictly against asking athletes to skip it in some sort of misguided attempt at something vaguely anti doping.

Whats vague about it??? Or misguided?

Do you agree with the IOC's decision?

So, say Ireland boycotts the Olympics...then what?

    What else do we boycott?

Is it just the Olympics or would a boycott be about making a stand against drugs in sport?

Where state sponsorsed cheating is covered up and just ignored by the organisers of the event would be a good place to start.

I don't just think Ireland should boycott tbf.

It's misguided and vague in that you're asking if athletes who have put the last 4 years of their lives into getting as far as the Olympics, should now not go in order to somehow change the future of world sport. Or something.

As to whether I agree with decision or not? I'll be honest and say I'm not convinced. Initial reaction was one of resigned dismay.

And Bolt. Like what are the odds he is clean ???

Rooting for Gatlin to win the 100 myself. It would be such a sweet victory.

    I'd say Bolt is clean.

He just simply a once in a generation physical freak.

He'd have been found out in some way by now if he wasn't clean.

There is indeed room for a courageous country to call the Olympics for the stinking turd of non-sport that it is and just pull out completely. For ever. It really is beyond a joke. The hypocrisy is astronomical. Its just a horrendous parody of itself. Medals for beach volleyball, twirling a ribbon on a stick, slow motion horse ballet, and synchronised swimming. They really are just taking the piss, and must have some laugh that some of the world still fall for it, and takes the games seriously. Looks like golfers are the only ones who are prepared to call a spade a spade, and admit they could be bothered even getting out of bed for it.

So what is acceptable as a sport in your opinion?

The baton twirling isn't a sport it's part of rhythmic gymnastics which in all fairness takes a great degree of athleticism.

Golfers don't want to go because it's not the pinnacle of their sport, it is for most other sports in the Olympics.

Well the golfers have said its more about the Zika virus rather than drugs but personally I always felt professional golfers taking part in the olympics was utter BS just as the US basketball team was full of the very best of the professional sport.

There is at least some evidence to suggest that the Dream Team's appearance at Barcelona in '92 helped grow the sport more globally.

Whether or not that justifies the changing of rules for the Olympics is a different matter.

Should not have been added to the olympics if it were to have retained its credibility (looking aside for the moment from the corruption, the rampant nationalistic jingoism, the moral corruption, the drugs, the burying of positive drugs tests, the global political machinations, the horrendous lack of entertainment value, etc, etc, ):

    - anything that involves a judge holding up a score is not a sport
    - anything that is a mickey mouse cutdown offshoot of a real sport that was just meant to be played for a lark and everyone knows the real players play the real sport
    - anything that that is not played by hundreds of thousands to a high level and by many countries around the world
    - anything that has an event that is the pinnacle victory of the sport that is not the olympics
    - anything involving twirling ribbons
    - anything invented or added to the games so that a country can win medals
    - anything where eligibility restriction apply, pro/amateur, age, etc
    - anything remotely resembling rejects from the royal ballet who were rejected for being too equine
