German activist lied about sex assault by Arab men to avoid fueling racism

The national spokeswoman of Germany’s left-wing youth movement Solid has reportedly admitted that she lied to police about the ethnicity of three men who allegedly sexually assaulted her, because she was afraid of fueling racism against refugees.

Selin Goren, 24, told police in January that she was robbed by three men in Mannheim, where she works as a refugee activist, the Daily Mail reported.

Ms. Goren told officers that the men were a “mixed group” of foreigners and locals who were speaking German. After her initial interview, she returned to the police 12 hours later to tell them that she was sexually assaulted by the men who were of “Arab appearance” and speaking either Kurdish or Farsi.

She may not be a nutjob. She may be so traumatised by the whole incident that she reframed it in a way that made it easier to cope with, and stayed with that narrative until she'd stabilised enough to confront the facts.

People can behave in difficult to understand ways when they're acutely distressed.

I'm going to look at this from a slightly different perspective. When someone is the victim of a crime there can sometimes be shame, guilt, confusion or denial that perhaps they brought it on themselves especially where it might involve someone they care about or in this case a cause which the victim believed in or cared about.

This would be quite common in domestic abusive relationships as a reluctance to report an assault. The accompanying sense of shame to admit that perhaps they backed the wrong horse or the rescue dog they took in off the street and lovingly cared for ended up biting them. Interesting to see that she did change or statement afterwards.

I only read the op not the article, but is it not that she didn't want to fuel racism in others? Not that she didn't want to be viewed as a racist herself. Too many negatives in that sentence.

Stories like these do nothing to dissuade the immense distrust people have in the media and politicians. When you have a political activist so committed to a certain narrative that she will lie about being attacked herself, it demonstrates how extreme some of the trendy right on groups and ideologies are. Its like something out of 1984.

Why would she report an alleged crime and give the police false information about the identities of the alleged attackers?
To be sure the police could not find/identify/convict them?
And thus other women are at risk of falling victim to the same people.

It does not make sense.

Agree that people who have been the victims of terrible crimes behave irrationally but this does not make sense at all.

But my use of the term 'nut job' was excessive - sorry.

This is how I read it but I suppose it's a bit more difficult to paint the left in the bad light with the version in the article.

Yeah so I just read the article and it is the case. She didn't want to fuel racism in others by giving them an "excuse/justification" so to speak. Nothing to do with the possibility of her being labelled a racist.
