Was I just being oblivious? I assumed he was torturing her, not raping her.

    But he was already married.....

A love affair seems a more likely option.

In general Targaryens can and did marry multiple people.

maybe it was a bit of both. It was left to your imagination.

She'd become consumed by revenge so much she pulled The Mountain away from watching Tommen which allowed Tommen to kill himself.

It just looked to me like his job was done, that's why he left.

Yeah. As soon as the Sept of Baelor blew, he was off to do whatever 'The Mountain that rots in a tin can' does.

A little of column A, a little of column B. I think the latter could easily constitute as torture, tbh.

I assumed was rape- could hear Mountain removing his armour and Cersei going"Shame" almost confirmed it

I assumed the 'my face is the last thing you'll see' threat mean he was taking out her eyes.

Cersei said she wouldn't be dying today and that The Mountain is her new God.

To me that sounds like she's now The Mountain's play-thing, we could probably even see her in an future episode next season. Either way, she's getting a fate worse than death since she's getting the full extent of Cersei's revenge.

I agree that it's a bit much to describe Benioff and Weiss as 'sick' over the content of the show. It's a primitive medieval world and everything within the show pretty accurately reflects what war and conflict entailed in reality. Rape was a powerful and brutal weapon in such times. I didn't really understand the massive backlash against the scene with Sansa last season, either. A brutal act of violation that has irreversibly changed her and set her down a path of great uncertainty and certainly completely in character for someone as despicable as Ramsey Bolton.

I can't imagine how terrifying such a situation would be for the Septa - the prospect of being raped by the grotesque remains of a man infamous for the sickening and brutal rape of Ellia Martel after he violently murdered her children before her eyes. Scene was ambiguous though. Hard to know exactly what he planned to do to her but I agree the chant of the word 'shame' would suggest that it was rape.

Raises the question for me though, just how sentient is The Mountain? From that episode, he seems very much back on form, but until the finale, he was entirely robotic and devoid of any real evidence of autonomy. It's like the prospect of torturing or raping the Septa awakened him.

Apparently HBO have released this image showing character relationships...

Confirming what we already knew regarding Jon.

According to that, the mad King killed both Brandon and Rickard Stark.

    What's that about?

He raped her right? At least that's what we're led to believe. I felt really shady about the morality of that scene. On one hand, we empathise with Cersei - it feels semi-celebratory almost as she 'wineboards' her - because of what she was forced to endure at the hands of the nun. This is supposed to be revenge porn, ala Ramsey. Then it quickly becomes...something else.

I get moral ambiguity. I love Cersei's character and how she's written in such shades of grey. I love this show and previously thought it got a hard time because of past rape scenes, when it clearly always portrayed the rapists as pure evil men. But, for me, this blurred a line that shouldn't be blurred and kinda revealed a disturbing side of Beinoff and Weiss' moral compass. They're sick ****s, we know this and kinda enjoy how it manifests in a bad ass TV show, but they did themselves no favours here for me...
I didn't get the impression he raped her at all? Is he even capable of getting it up? Or of even having any interest in getting it up?

He's more a zombie than anything, the way he was stood over her I got the impression she was screaming from him tightening her restraints or somesuch.

EDIT: Alchemist13 (kind of suspicious username for this thread :p ) beat me to it.

Time for a poll! Which would be worse:

    1. Being Theon tortured by Ramsay.
    2. Being Unella tortured by The Mountain.

Is that not Ned Starks father and older brother who (along with Robert Barathian's) father went to the king and asked for Lyanna back. He then killed the three of them, kicking off the war?

It's book-history (well, not all of it....some of it is mentioned in previous seasons but I can't remember how much or what it said) Rickard was
Ned's father, he was murdered at Kings Landing by the Mad King when he travelled there to demand the release of his son Brandon, who was imprisoned after he went there seeking to challenge Rhaegar for the release of his sister Lyanna Stark (mother of Jon Snow) - Rickard was burnt alive and Brandon was strangled as he watched his father burn. This is pretty much the event that kicked off Robert's Rebellion.

In the original trailer for the first season of Game of Thrones there is actually a few seconds showing these murders in the throne room, but the whole scene was cut out for the final broadcast unfortunately, presumably not to confuse people too much.

You make it sound almost gentle ;).
Rickard was hung over a fire and basically boiled in his own armour. Meanwhile Brandon was restrained by his neck with a sword just out of reach and strangled himself trying to get to it. So each watched the other die.

    Nice.

    spoiler stuff

Is that Brandon as in Uncle Brandon? If so, I'm even more confused now.
Of course, that man's name is Benjen, not Brandon.

The original pilot got canned because it was overly complicated and too dense (test audiences found it hard to follow who was who). I thought the Mad King stuff was all cut and wasn't one of the scenes that was migrated into the new pilot.

In a way those events are all the better for not being shown. It increases their notoriety and horror. Jamie has revealed snippets in a number of scenes - taunting Ned about it in the
He loved to watch people burn, the way their skin blackened and blistered and melted off their bones.

Bran is actually Brandon just known as Bran

Bran and Rickon are presumably named for Brandon and Rickard

I'm glad it wasn't shown from the off. It is good to get teased this info throughout the show.
