Lads still spreading slurry here so I am going to milk at 12 tonight and again at 6 tomorrow evening, roughly 18 hours.

Not quite once a day, more like 1.5 times a day:pac:

We're not supposed to talk about it.

    Things got a bit heated.

    Hopefully they will be back.

Had a ridiculously close one with the bull 2days ago in the parlour. Cow bulling and he followed her into the parlour, I was trying to draft both through to the crush when I was letting the row out, but of course the bull goes to mount the cow and she makes a dart straight in front of me. I had to throw myself into the pit, missed them by inches. Utterly stupid of me not to have given both more respect but I was under pressure that morning as afew other problems so was frustrated already. Them sort of incidents I really don't like repeating because my luck will run out.

When my dad is here he tries to seperate the bull from the cow he's after:eek: feck sake he'll get himself killed. When I am here on my own the bull comes in after the cow and doesnt cause any trouble

Be interesting to see the tank at next collection...I'd be pretty sure that if we were as far as August you wouldn't see a litre drop...Let us know about this time...

Be a great way to get to get to amunster final...if we had a munster final to go to....

First impressions good so far. First 2 rounds grand. Next 2 not so much. Last 2 grand again.

It was relaxing tbh. The acrs were great with having to walk up and down a lot more than normal. Slow cows are really noticed at this craic.

Next milking 5 tomorrow and I get to take the kids to school and herself gets to work a bit of flexitime for the holidays.

I can see myself doing this again.

In New Zealand some of the farms would go onto three milkings every two days, maybe not this early in the season but certainly later on. Never done it myself but certainly has its upsides.

Just got the results of the milk recording have last 6 bulk tank recordings as average of 100 cells which is pretty decent yet when the milk recording results came I have out of 50 cows 1 at 8 million (never heard of a cow at that b4) 1 at
7 million (again a first) 4 cows between 3 and 4 million and 5 more cows between 2 - 3 million. Previous milk recording had one cow over a million. any advice? retest high cows? Ive no clinical mastitis on the farm for the past month and notging on the filter pad either.

You could chance giving them a shot of pen strep or a couple of mastitis tubes. Ask your vet do they sample milk, may tell you what to treat for. If scc doesn't fall soon. The hook is a great cure for it aswell!
Although Dawggone said give then miccotil at drying off. I think. He'd know.

    Nah, I'm lazy:D

It's just the way things worked out with slurry going on till after 10. It was nice to relax in the evening tbh without having to rush down and up again.

I saw a few bits about it online and said I'd try it and see how it went. The first milking into the tank as well so I will see if there is much change in volumes.

It might suit us fairly well as herself can work up a bit of flexitime and I can carry the kids to school.

We'll see how it goes but I'd say you would want some relief milking for the midnight milking fairly often.

What are people's thoughts on the article in the findo on johnes? Linking it with human illness. Compulsory eradication scheme?

Always milk at 9 and 15hr splits here (out of laziness yep ha), it would definitely make sense for me to go every 16hr also but I'm away most weekends during the day, and fair few weekday evenings also, so 2bh I'd see it utterly wrecking my head trying to juggle it. As things stand taking me about 70mins the morning and an hr the evening so don't have it too bad. I'd certainly consider the likes of OAD from Sept on however.

It and IBR will be the next targets after BVD. Compulsory eradication will cost too much money as the Government will have to pay a fair market price for the animal and tests aren't accurate enough to eradicate it I'd say.

They are coming a bit late with that article, nothing has been proven on the link between the 2. I have been in the johnes scheme for the last 3 years. Also they had a story of a meath farmer did they they not have the same story a week or 2 ago. Also there is an incentive of 100 euro to take part in the scheme, I missed out on it last year as I only tested 93% rather than the 95% eligible animals- which was probably 2 heifers

When I was working off farm an odd evening it would be ten or elevin milking and maybe six or seven in the morning. Wasn't really fair on the cows and you wouldn't be long getting fed up of it yourself either.

The interest has dwindled a lot since then admittedly.

Tasty job Nek. BTW did you get the dog's permission to use his image?

I put a temporary rail up to deter the "help yourself" brigade which actually worked quite well this morning. Unfortunately for me the biggest self feeder always comes in behind the smallest heifer, and she behind the slowest of slow milkers. Until this morning keeping them on their feet and out of the pit was costing about a bag of nuts and a lot of high blood pressure but they were much better settled once they were all running out of food together.

Still someway to go, think I will try either zig zag rails or headlocks when we get across to the other side.

I told my advisor I was out of the kt program. I would be more than happy to be involved with another group in a straightforward discussion group and told him that.

they'll probably be concentrating on the clients that are yielding the €500/hd to the group....and who'd blame them.
i'll be suggesting a major reduction in my teagasc bill for being involved

The rub on that one rangler is that teagasc used to pay a membership fee to be a member of the original discussion group we were involved with here. I'm supposed to host a neighbouring group next month. We'll see what happens.

I think i am going to signup as I wont have the option of another group not involved in the kt program. i have got a lot out of discussion groups. My preferred option would be to have DG outside kt, there have been some important points raised on here regarding our data.

I also think the money brings people out who are only interested in the few euro and from past experiences they contribute very little to the group.

More than one way to skin a cat.

Could you buy (and perhaps you have) a few handy beef stores and enter the beef KT? Same money. Less hassle.

I'm wary about discussion groups since the last PM i did was being discussed in the local shop as I was getting a few bits the following morning:(

I told my advisor I was going to put in a figure for wages into mine as I refuse to work for free and would take it off for the DG comparison.
