    Mercedes benz CLS 350 2006

    €4,550
    NCT Jan 2017

    Me, I like these - a lot...

Ad says it needs a timing chain, so it's honest, which is always a good start :-)

Isn't that crazy that a 77k car needs a timing chain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,473 ✭✭✭YbFocus

Could it be that it's reached it's time change point of ten years?
I am only guessing but I'd say that's what that is!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,148 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Chains don't have time change points and should last the lifetime of a car (several hundred thousand km)

If one is gone, there is either a design weakness and / or the car wasn't serviced properly

Never liked the finish of the wood on the dash of those CLS' - much prefer it to be polished like it is on the steering wheel.

You would probably be budgeting a few grand for a timing chain on one of those too.

Wonder how much a timing chain would be for that CLS, are we talking hundreds or thousands?

Well North of €1000 anyway, V6 so has to be an engine out job.

couldn't see it making the asking if it was mint so with the engine issue it's an ornament.

A good independent should do it for around 800e. Its an in-situ job.

But I imagine that the timing chain is only the start of the issues for that woeful engine

to be fair when is a timing chain replacement just a timing chain replacement? As you say it's merely the start.
The parts would be €300/€400 alone for a chain kit.

Yeah, as soon as you whip off the covers you will probably be looking at new balancer shafts, seals, etc...

All the metal swarf will be eating into your big ends as well.....

Not with modern mercs anyhow. The chains are not how they used to be and they do go, even if the car has been serviced on the button.

    Poor design so.
A routine change isn't in the service schedule.

Is it not an inspection item, to be replaced if the links/guides show wear?

    If not it should be!!

Not that easy to inspect a chain. I know on my accord if you don't use 0w30 oil it causes damage to chain and guides over time.

    Wow.....
MB in their wisdom modified the camshaft adjusters and the sensors to allow for bigger parameters, a cheap fix and the cel did not come on again but the balance shaft continued to wear. However this modification (cheating really) allowed the car to reach the end of its warranty before total failure

Read a cork forum where a guy had to spend 5k on a gearbox rebuild and a couple of sam modules on a 7 year old cls.

This is a very overpriced luxobarge. I wish I had the money to buy it and burn it to a cinder!

Five grand. If you're looking for a barge thats a bit different...this might be it?

Pity there's no NCT on it. It would be a good candidate if it did! Still a nice car though :)

What's the problem with it not having nct?

W126 is my favourite saloon of all time, but chances are that one is completely rotted

I thought that was one of the rules of this thread? Maybe not I don't post here ofter but I assumed it was the same as bangernomics.

    The rules are
    Luxobarge requirements:
Price: Max €5k (updated by moderator)
    Tax: Irrelevant

But tbh I fully get behind what Ded_Zebra is saying. For 5 grand if a €56 NCT couldn't be talked into the deal I'd walk, and probably look at this decent (albeit non-lpg'd) '380 with NCT for the same kind of money and from a Mercedes enthusiast

Anyway...sorry for all the links. I keep looking at these online :o

I think the original CLS hasn't aged well at all. I find it bloated and overstated

I think a few of the current generation mercs are not going to age well once the shininess goes off the paint job e.g. CLA
I've nothing against the marque. I've owned a couple.

No, I thought nct on classic cars was optional not compulsory in Ireland, I know they need to be roadworthy but they don't need a valid nct.

Pre-1980 cars are nct exempt. Anything registered from 1/1/80 needs a yearly test.
